Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

January 10, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. It is currently a wet start to our morning with times of heavy rain and some fog/mist with temperatures around 39 degrees. Kind of wet out there for sure, I can hear the rain pounding on the roof.

Today will have rain and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 5pm, then a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 56. Southeast wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. So pretty wet.

Sunset will be at 4:41 pm with twilight at 5:13 pm which is one minute and 5 seconds later then yesterday. Before you know it, sunset will be after 5 PM and we’ll have some sun in the evenings.

There are 1 month, 5 days until It’s Presidents Day. It will be here before you know it. I hope to take a long weekend and maybe a few days added on to go winter camping and ice fishing at Balsam Pond in Chenango County. It would be nice to get out of town for a few days.

Been researching making concentric circles and viewshed analysis in QGIS because I want to start making maps that show what one can see from a top of a mountain or firetower. Maps of a region are great but it would be nice to hide or at least mark peaks and lakes that are invisible to the viewer. Fortunately, they make QGIS plug-ins that make such things easy to do. I got to get down to the library to download those plug-ins at noontime today.

January 9, 2015 morning

Good morning. Happy Saturday. Kind of a gray start to the weekend with clouds and 37 degrees. Mild though. Chance of showers today and rain tomorrow. Tomorrow’s high will be around 57 which is a record for early January as El Nino plus a negative Pacific Atlantic Oscillation has kept the east coast warm all winter.

Pretty much staying in town this weekend as it going to be pretty cool and rainy but I have a lot of things I need to do, now that I have my truck back and I’m not heading out camping until at least next weekend.

January 8, 2016 evening

Good evening. Currently 38 degrees and cloudy this evening. Watch out for freezing rain and ice in the morning then rain for tomorrow. Otherwise, enjoy your weekend. It’s nice that the work week is over.

January 8, 2015 morning

Good morning on the last sunny day until next week. It’s going to rain this weekend and be incredibly mild. But in the meantime on this Friday it’s bright and sunny, around 14 degrees. Not bad as we approach the coldest week of the year in the Albany area.

I woke up early this morning and caught an earlier bus to work. I’ll actually be right on time this morning. I slept like really well last night, so I expect it to be a rather productive Friday, and I’ll finish up my plan revisions today – assuming nothing happens to distract me.

Not crazy about the wet and gray weekend weather that is predicted but at least it’s not bitterly cold. I’m sure we’ll have more cold in the coming weeks. Indeed next week looks to be cooler but hardly frigid with temperatures expected to reach the 20s in the daytime. Frigid by normal Albany standards is single digits for highs, a stiff breeze and lows in the negative teens range. Forgotten late February 2015 so quickly?

I think the past week has gone pretty quickly and now we are about a quarter way through January and about two weeks from my 33rd birthday and more than half way to retirement. To someplace warmer or at least with a cozy wood stove.

I hope we have at least enough nice weather to go hiking for a while this weekend. I hate spending so much time indoors , although I’m hopeful to get out camping for the long weekend (Martin Luther King Jr Day) next weekend.

January 5, 2016 update

Good morning. We are now up to five degrees above zero. Winter continues its grip on the region today with temperatures only expected to reach the lower 20s by three in the afternoon. Sunny though. Lots of salt on the roads.

It’s winter. It’s January but at least sunny. Time moves on one day after day. The cold weather won’t last forever. The weekend doesn’t look particularly good for getting out of town  at this point.

I got my new EZ-Pass in the mail. I will mail back the old one later in the day. The new transmitter is much smaller.

At least I have my truck back and can get around. Tonight I have to go to the store and get some dress shoes. Might also work on some blog code. But other than that I don’t have any real exciting plans for the next few days.

January 5, 2016 morning

Good morning. Clear and three degrees this morning. Chilly and with a bone chilling breeze. Stay warm on your way to work this morning. Warmer weather expected for Hump Day. Have a great day.

January 4, 2015 evening

Good evening. Currently 6 degrees and clear. The breeze this evening makes it seem even colder. Cold enough that the exhaust vapor from my truck froze on the bumper. Might hit zero by daybreak.

$300 later I got my truck back from the shop. The alternator and wiring were fine, no diode leakage or excessive current pulls when off, just the starting battery was bad. It’s what I expected but was a bit miffed about the bill until I saw the replacement battery was $212. Sure repair shop mark up, but it’s also a name brand battery, not an off label Advance Auto $130 special. I wish Advanced Auto had done a better job testing the battery but it’s water under the bridge. I feel good knowing at least the dual battery setup is not trashing the batteries – it was just a cheap battery per the shop. That and I may have had an accident last summer with reversed jumper cables and some drunk bros. Never jump start a car when everyone involved in the process is totally drunk. Well, we will see. I hope this new, more expensive battery will last longer. Cars are to be used and broken. They are money sops. I could permanently disable the dual battery system but I like my CB Radio, inverter and lights, and based on physics and automotive science, there is no reason it should be damaging starting batteries. The shop confirmed charging voltage was fine.

I was still super annoyed about it all because this problem meant I was without a car for three out of the past four weekends and had to beg a lot of favors out of friends and my family. If I had known it was a bad battery and Advance Auto just plain refused to warranty it, I would have just bought a battery myself and saved some money. Regardless, I just hope it continues to work fine going forward. If not, the truck will be back at the repair shop. The dual battery system with all its problems is still a minor cost compared to the lift kit or the truck itself, despite being a constant cause for frustration. Big Red is still pretty sweet.

Other than that, things are moving forward. It’s cold. I went out and bought some groceries. Tomorrow I have to get some shoes for work. Went down to the library for a bit. Tomorrow is Tuesday. A new day.
