Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

April 2, 2016 Evening

Good evening! There was no weather report this morning, because I was recovering from a crazy week at work. It was a pretty cloudy morning, but this evening has really cleared out with a modest breeze and temperatures around 52 degrees in Delmar. Mostly clear as I sit down at the town park listening to the birds. Sunset tonight is at 7:23 PM with darkness around 7:53 PM. At times the breeze is a bit cool, but all and all a pretty nice evening in the park. Waning Crescent Moon with about 30% visible after 2:42, although I suspect the clouds and snow will block views of the moon.

We expect some pretty big changes in the weather come tonight. Sometime after midnight, we are expecting it to snow, leaving about 2-3 inches of snow on the ground in the morning. Tonight won’t be super cold, but it will be a few degrees below average with temperatures expecting to drop to around 30 degrees. It may start out as rain but will turn to snow. It’s not clear how much will stick to pavement, and indeed the ground may be warm enough that a lot won’t accumulate, at least to start out. Tomorrow will be frigid with temperatures expected to only reach 35 degrees. In early April, a typical night only reaches 32 degrees for the low, and the high is typically 53 degrees.

Possibly more snow for late Sunday night into early Monday morning. We could have a brief period of slippery roads early Monday with plenty of the root of all evil road salt. We are looking at about 3 inches of snow on Monday, the bulk of it coming in the day time. The low Sunday will be 23 degrees, which is only 7 degrees above the record low of 16 degrees set back in 1954. The snow won’t last or be a persistent hazard on the roads, as temperatures will reach 37 degrees on Monday — 16 degrees below normal, but still warm enough to melt snow even without deicing.

The cold blast that we are getting starting tonight will be with us at least through Friday, with the average temperature 10-20 degrees below normal, especially during the day. Many nights will be cold, but the night time temperatures will moderate by the second half of the week. You’ll need your heat on for at least another week, but at least most of the winter has been fairly moderate.

April 1, 2016 Night

All things must come to an end. The nice warm stretch of weather we’ve been having will be replaced with a frigid weekend. 53 degrees and cloudy this evening. Tonight will drop down to 43 degrees with mostly cloudy skies.

Saturday will be cloudy with a high around 55 degrees. Then cold weather comes around Saturday night with rain and snow showers that evening with a low of 22. Sunday will be windy and frigid. The high is only going to be around 35. More sunny in the afternoon.

Have a good evening. Sunrise around 6:33 AM. Sleep well.

April 1, 2016 morning

Good morning! Happy Monday. It looks like this morning we are at 73 degrees with sunny but somewhat hazy conditions. We have a dew point right now at 65, but the dew point is expected to climb to a fairly oppressive 68 degrees by mid-afternoon. We are looking for a high of 87 degrees this afternoon with haze and sun and a chance of potentially severe thunderstorms.

Sunset this evening will be at 8:37 pm, and last light of the day around 9:12 pm. We will have a total of 15 hours and 8 minutes of daylight today. The moon will be nearly full tonight, rising around 8 PM.

I know none of us are big fans of Monday. But it was definitely a nice weekend out camping in the woods. Sometimes you have to go to work to make money to pay for all the bills. And the office is air conditioned — perfect to avoid the heat.

And the good news of course is that the weekend is only 5 days away. And is the nice thing is that in two weeks, it will be the Fourth of July Weekend, which this year happens to be a three day weekend. Not sure where I am going to go for the Fourth of July holiday, but it would be fun to go somewhere in the wilderness. I still need to pick up some fireworks. They were a lot of fun last year.

All and all, it should be yet another hazy, hot, and humid summer day. Be careful with those thunderstorms this afternoon, as some could be quite strong. But that air conditioning will feel good in the city, and by evening, it will cool down somewhat.

March 31, 2016 Night

Good evening. As we head into the 11 PM hour, we are still around 67 degrees. I am certainly enjoying the fresh air this evening. After getting back from the park, I sat out back and enjoyed a few beers.

Too bad it’s cloudy, so we can’t see the stars at all tonight. The good news is the rain has held off for a bit. The best chance of rain is sometime tomorrow morning, most likely around 7 AM.

The low tonight is expected to 59 degrees, which is about 28 degrees above normal. Sunrise is at 6:35 AM and first light at 6:06 AM. Look for rain and 70 degrees tomorrow. There will be some clearing by afternoon in the evening.

Sleep well! Enjoy the fresh air and warm temperatures, as they won’t last.

March 31, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. 50 degrees this morning and the birds are chirping outside. A lot of clouds but the sun is peaking through in parts. Could be nicer but at least it’s warn.

Today is definitely going to be a nice one assuming that the clouds don’t last all day. Partly sunny conditions, at least for the first half of the day and a high around 70. Breezy though. South wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. On the whole, bad for day for the last day of March. Sunset at 7:23 pm. Rain showers come in around 11 pm but mild conditions and a low of only 60 degrees. You’ll be able to leave your windows open and enjoy the fresh air tonight.

Tomorrow starts April. The creeks are stocked and trout season starts tomorrow. April is when it finally starts to get really spring like and when things green up. Looking forward to going on my April road trip.

Today in 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps is established by President Franklin Roosevelt with the mission of relieving rampant unemployment and restoration of natural resources that had been damaged by poor agricultural, timber, and industrial practices. The CCC was a priority of Franklin Roosevelt who had a passion for scientific forestry and conserving our natural resources for all to utilize.

Also today in 1998, Netscape released Mozilla source code under an open source license. This set off a revolution in web browsers, eventually leading to open source and closed source browsers like Google Chrome and many embedded browsers on our mobile phones.

Happy Birthday to Al Gore. Today most remembered for his climate change activism, but he also was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for president in 2000 and Bill Clinton vice-president. It seems likely that God will be on his side eventually for his climate activism, but unfortunately for the future of our world, he has been largely unsuccessful despite all his efforts to raise attention on the issue.

Enjoy this beautiful day at least before the clouds take over.

March 30, 2016 Night

Clouds are starting to crowd out the stars but it’s still 50 degrees in Delmar. Went for a nice evening walk and watched the first half hour of the PBS Newshour. Donald Trump is still a jerk. Looking for a low of 43 degrees tonight under mostly cloudy skies. But still rather mild.

Seventy degrees with increasing clouds tomorrow. Rain showers Thursday evening but warm, with temperature not expected to drop below sixty. You will be able to leave your windows open all night tomorrow. Should be a great last day of March 2016.

Sleep well. Have a great night …

March 30, 2016 Update

Lots of sun this morning and at the 9 o’clock hour we are looking at 32 degrees as we head up to 57 degrees. Listening to Bobby Vinton’s Please Don’t Stop Loving Me as I head downtown on this sunny morning. The lack of wind and ample bright sunshine makes it feel quite warm.

Tonight in about 10 hours the sun will set around 7:20 PM with last light of the day around 7:50. Clear evening, around 50 degrees for the evening hour. I wouldn’t mind going to the park this evening, but we will see how things go at work. Without the last quarter moon rising until 12:45 AM, it will be a good night for viewing the stars, especially beyond the city lights.

Two months from now it will be Memorial Day. Seems hard to believe, especially with such cold weather predicted for the weekend.
On 1909, the Queensboro Bridge in New York City opens, linking Manhattan and Queens. Ed Koch would be proud. That said, I like my pickup truck and I like the Chinese food in Canastota.

Happy Birthday to former Alaskan US Senator Mark Begich. A one term senator, he was a member of the Democratic party and defeated Ted Stevens who was in the middle of a major corruption scandal.
