Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest, spanning an impressive 10,588 acres, proudly holds the distinction of being Schoharie County’s largest state forest. This natural haven has garnered immense popularity among enthusiasts of outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and various recreational activities.
Traversing a segment of this expansive landscape is the Long Path, a trail adorned with aqua blazes, stretching over 350 miles. Within this forest, the Eminence Lean To stands as a notable point of interest along the Long Path, positioned roughly 0.5 miles to the east of Old Cemetery Road. A crossing of Old Cemetery Road can be spotted just to the south of an ancient burial ground.
Among the captivating features of the forest are the campsites discreetly nestled along Betty Brook Road, as well as the inviting spots found at Duck Pond, situated along Burnt Hill Road.
For those with a penchant for angling and boating, Looking Glass Pond, located along Rossman Hill Road, offers an inviting prospect. This charming pond not only facilitates fishing and boating but also boasts well-maintained fishing platforms courtesy of the Fulton Fish and Game Club.
Good morning! Mostly sunny and 29 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐. There are 1.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ก๏ธ
Got a fairly early start this morning ๐ to walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center to embrace as much of the time change as much as possible. I don’t want to get into the habit of sleeping in ๐ but continuing to get up early and doing my walk. Plus it’s a nice morning with a giant sunrise about a half hour after I started my walk at 6:45 after having a good pan ๐ณ of eggs ๐ฅ and lots of vegetables. I’m mostly out of fruit so it was eggs today. Little less healthy then recent days but I’ll get plenty of steps today. ๐ฃ
I figure it’s best to walk early before the woods is soft and muddy, ๐ as I’m sure the case will be by afternoon. Yesterday afternoon was nicer than expected but I stuck to my plan of going to the library ๐ in the afternoon because with the melting snow and mud it wouldn’t be a good day to go to Five Rivers plus this morning looked so nice.
Today will have increasing clouds โ โก โ, with a high of 45 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. Red winged black birds ๐ฆ are out but not in real big numbers yet as are the morning doves ๐ and red headed woodpeckers. It was early enough this morning that Meads cows ๐ฎ were all piled up in the cold sleeping and chewing their cud. No spring peepers ๐ธ yet though ice is mostly off the ponds at this point.

Maybe snow ๐จ or rain โ come Monday night into Tuesday but I think it might be too warm in the city to add up to much. Plus it’s March and if it’s pushing fifty with rain come Friday it will be gone come the weekend. I’m fine with that. I have a family ๐ช event to go to next weekend so I can’t get out of town this weekend but maybe the following weekend. My truck is due for service fairly soon – oil change, transmission fluid and tire rotation come April before I start doing any big trips but Rennselearville isn’t too far for a weekend trip.
Today in 1933, was the first of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats. ๐ป Back when everybody listened to the radio for their news and entertainment. You can still listen to them on the interwebs if you are curious.

Here are the 155 races from the last 4 General Elections in Albany County, adjusted to the new EDs based on the Voter Age Population block data.
Actually it’s slightly less then 155 because a few of the vote for two races aren’t in the spreadsheet as my crunching program hasn’t implemented them. I’ve not done primaries, though at some point I will. I also haven’t done anything before 2019 as the State Board used to only posted enrollments in PDF which are more challenging to accurately export.

Out for the morning walk at 5:45 am today. ๐ถ Dark at the start of the walk especially with snow coming down but pretty. I wanted to get used to getting up early and maximize my weekend – plus avoid walking in the rain โ should it warm up later in the day.

Not sure how nice a day it’s going to be today โ so my plan is when I get home ๐ก from the morning walk ๐ถ to explore some various things in code and maybe work on some blog content ๐ฅ and do some reading ๐. I also want to go down to the library ๐ before five 5โฃ and then my evening walk.

Today in 1993, Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn in the next day, becoming the first female Attorney General of the United States. โ๏ธ I’m not going to say anything more except to say history is her judge. I don’t have warm and fuzzy thoughts about the 1990s.

Yesterday was a Thursday and it was a busy one with a big background on my desk so edit. ๐ So time went by quickly. ๐๐ I eat a lot of fruit and then came home and had a small bowl of pasta with lots of green beans. And saved lots of pasta for future use. ๐Finished up my 10,000 steps minimum over 50 days though ultimately I believe I walked closer to 800,000 steps ๐ฃ over that time period.
Last night I was been doing some research on Kriging and election mapping though I realized it’s a bit more difficult without having the voter file geocoded and the Census household survey data not released yet from the Census for block level data. ๐ฅ Plus I’m actually not sure how valuable the results are as election districts are pretty small to start out. It’s going to be even harder in coming years as they’ve reduced the number of election districts to 231 from 319 in 2023.

I was annoyed that the remaining oranges I had bought ๐ just this week went soft and moldy by Wednesday. I checked them at the store ๐ฌ and they were good there. Two weeks in a row, once at Wally World and the other at Hannaford. I guess I need pigs ๐ฝ and chickens ๐ to eat them. Regardless, I think they must be getting out of season.
