February 13, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Currently mostly cloudy and windy and 5 degrees in Delmar. This afternoon will be mostly sunny, with a high near 14. Wind chill values as low as -22. Blustery, with a northwest wind 23 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. In others cold, but if you are adequately dressed and going from building to building, it’s not that cold.

Sunset will be at 5:24 pm with twilight at 5:53 pm which is one minute and 19 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight we have a Waxing Cresent Moon with 39% illuminated. It will set at 10:38 pm. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around -10. Wind chill values as low as -31. Blustery, with a northwest wind 14 to 21 mph. Continued cold. The mercury can drop somewhat lower at times in Albany, but not much colder then this with the wind

In four weeks on March 12 the sun will be setting at 5:59 pm, which is 34 minutes later then today. There are 41Β days until Good Friday. when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm. It doesn’t seem like Good Friday is that far away, but we still have some frigid days expected before then.

Making progress on a bunch of things today. Picked up some drain-cleaning solvent to hopefully free up the bathroom drain. I poured it in and it seemed to be draining a little bit better, but the label said give it a few hours to dissolve the mess. As I believe it’s just soap and hair, hopefully it will be good by later. I may add more drain-cleaning solvent later and hold off using the sink until I feel fairly certain the clog is gone. I also bought a hair-stopper cover, so hopefully things will be good.

Got my flu shot.Β I have never gotten a flu shot before, but it was a painless process. I didn’t even have to show my insurance card or give a credit card. They just pulled my information up from the system after giving them my date of birth and name. It took only 10 minutes at CVS, and the shot wasn’t at all painful. My right arm feels a little tingly in a spot now, but the shot didn’t hurt at all. I barely even felt it. I’ve never gotten a flu shot before, but it was such a quick and easy process, I’m going to make sure to do it again the in the future. Last year, one of my co-workers got the flu, and it’s not just a cold. It’s two weeks of feeling likeΒ you want to take your own life because of the agony, or so I’ve been told.

Checked the oil in my truck, and it was exactly where it was last week.Β If I’m burning or leaking oil, it certainly isn’t major thing. I thought I saw some oil dripping the other day after the oil change, but that was just oil I must have spilled a bit. I feel better knowing I won’t have to make any major repairs to the engine in the next few weeks. I don’t know why I thought it was a problem, except for noticing the oil was low three weeks ago before I added some and did an oil change. But at any rate, I’m now carefully logging my oil levels and checking it every week or two, to make sure there isn’t an issue going forward.

I was going to go up to the Adirondack Outdoorsman Show today,Β but I got a late start today, and figured I’d be better off seeing the exhibits when they are freshly set up in the morning on Sunday. I have a lot planned for Sunday, but if I get an early start I can get everything done in a prompt manor..

February 12, 2016 Update

Good morning! As we head into the 9 o’clock hour, it’s now up to nine degrees. Bright and sunny this morning, which makes the cold not seem too bad. I was up and going, so I could catch an earlier bus downtown to get a jump start on the work.

While it’s bright and sunny this morning, look for increasing clouds, with a high near 22. Wind chill values as low as -2. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Sunset will be at 5:23 pm with twilight at 5:52 pm which is one minute and 18 seconds later then yesterday.

It only looks colder from here for the long weekend. Ironically, it will get nicer for Tuesday with a modest warmup expected. Tonight will have some scattered snow showers, mainly between 10pm and 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9. South wind 6 to 9 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

There are 1 month, 8 days until Palm Sunday. Easter sure is early this year but it sometimes happens that way. At least eventually winter will come to an end. Already, the sun is coming up earlier and setting later, making days a little less short.

Happy Birthday to Phil Zimmerman who invented Pretty Good Privacy, the app that helps keep Internet communications secure. He turns 61 years old today.

Today in 1963, the National Park Service starts construction of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. It’s strange to think there was a time not that long ago that St. Louis was not identified by the massive arch. Had Nelson Rockefeller’s original plan stood, Albany would have gotten it’s own arch of freedom as part of the Empire State Plaza. It would have been pretty cool, although the final plaza when built was also quite magnificent.

February 12, 2016 Morning

Good morning on this frigid Friday! Sunny with only a few clouds and four degrees in Delmar. Cold start to our Friday for sure. Bundle up on your way to work. That bright sunshine is really nice, especially now that it’s in full force before 7 AM.

Today will have increasing clouds, with a high near 22. Wind chill values as low as -4. South wind 5 to 9 mph. But look at the upside – it’s a Friday.

February 11, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently mostly clear with a few clouds and 8 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will have isolated snow showers before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 6. Cold. Wind chill values as low as -6. West wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.Waxing crescent moon has already set. It was pretty while it lasted.

Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:55 am with first light at 6:26 am, which is 2 minutes and 20 seconds earlier then today. Friday will start out partly cloudy with increasing clouds, and a high near 24. With the wind it will feel much colder. Look for wind chill values as low as -1. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Just brr.

Did my taxes this evening. Made up some new topographic maps. Did some coding. Walked down to the library and back. Actually I took the bus down there, and I didn’t freeze. Only walked home. Not that cold here without the wind. But mostly just hanging out in my apartment and listening to the wind whip around.

I hope you had a good and not too frigid of a day. Stay warm and Sleep well!

February 10, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently mostly cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be scattered snow showers, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. Waxing crescent moon which set earlier tonight.

Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:56 am with first light at 6:27 am, which is 2 minutes and 19 seconds earlier then today. For tomorrow, we are looking at a chance of snow showers, mainly before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. West wind 10 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

I went for my evening walk after going down to the library. It is a pleasant evening, and I knew if I went to the library, I’d be up and going to my walk. Quite mild this evening and the stars are decent. Tired though, but I realized I would be able to do my walk this weekend with bitter cold expected.

Screwing around with data.ny.gov, I discovered I could make beautiful maps of retail grocery stores based on an Ag and Markets dataset. I decided to make a map of the 322 Stewart’s Shops that are located in New York State, primarily in the eastern half of upstate. It’s a really cool map. There are 49 Stewart’s Shops in Saratoga County alone, followed by 37 Stewart’s Shops in Albany County. Lots of places to buy milk and get gas. Cool stuff.

I hope you had a good day. Mine was a bit rough around the edges but things will get better as the week progresses or so I tell myself. Sleep well!

February 5, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently mostly clear and 27 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 19. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. A nice starry evening, I saw a shooting star on my evening walk. The shooting star was super bright as it burned up across the space into a series of sparks.

Tonight we will have a Waining Crescent Moon with 15% illuminated. It will rise at 4:56 am. You still have plenty of time to view the stars before the slender moon rises. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:03 am with first light at 6:33 am, which is 2 minutes and 11 seconds earlier then today.

I hope you had a good work week. It’s now the weekend. Sleep well!

February 5, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! It is currently overcast and 34 degrees in Delmar. Today will have a slight chance of snow before 11am. We once again will miss the northeaster pounding Boston. Darn snow hogs. We might get snow early next week. More depressing weather this morning but it won’t last. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 40. Northwest wind 9 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunset will be at 5:14 pm with twilight at 5:43 pm which is one minute and 19 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight we will have a Waining Crescent Moon with 15% illuminated. It will rise at 4:56 am. Not much of the moon left. Probably it’s the fault of Obama. The New Moon is on Monday.

There are 4 months, 13 days until Go Fishing Day. They usually have a free fishing weekend that weekend in June. Summer nights aren’t that long away.

This day in 1994, Byron De La Beckwith is convicted of the 1963 murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers.
The Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission for the years did what they could to protect him from prosecution. They also supported the assassin in many ways. It was pretty gross what happened in Mississippi in the 1960s on behalf of their government.
