June 3, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear πŸŒƒ and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. A bit of a chilly evening but not that bad for June. My Monday headache returned this evening, I think I might just be allergic to Mondays.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 45 degrees at 3am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. West wind 5 to 9 mph. Chilly night for sure but not record breaking cold. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1947.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon πŸŒ’ with 3% illuminated. The moon will rise at 6:26 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Sunday night with showers is likely. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:19 am with the first light at 4:44 am, which is 24 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 50 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 6 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers after 3pm. Increasing clouds 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. West wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1919.

It seems like I’m not detecting the signal on the external temperature sensor I hooked up the other day. πŸ˜• I’ll figure it out eventually. Probably just a loose wire or bad connection.

I checked the truck cap and all is doing well with the battery. πŸ”‹ While it was particularly bright and sunny today, everything seems well charged and no odors from hydrogen. I’ll keep an eye on it though. Looking forward to trying it out at camp in a few weeks.

Weekend still looks pretty good. 😎 Saturday, sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 54 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.

I think I will do some trail work volunteering on Saturday and maybe the Gas Up on Sunday with dad. β›½ It wouldn’t be a terrible weekend to go up North but maybe I’ll wait another week. Then next Monday is the oil change followed by the work picnic the following Tuesday.

In four weeks on July 1 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 8 minutes and 43 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 97 and 72 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 99 degrees was set back in 1913.

Looking ahead, Latest Sunset πŸŒ† is in 3 weeks, July 🏊🏿 is in 4 weeks, Cow Appreciation Day πŸ‚ is in 6 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM πŸŒ† is in 10 weeks, Labor Day πŸ‘¨β€πŸ is in 13 weeks, Last Sunset After 7 PM πŸŒ† is in 4 months, Columbus Day πŸ›₯️ is in 18 weeks and Election Day 2020 πŸ—³οΈ is in 17 months.

Did Cellphones Bring Down Crime Rates in the ’90s? – The Atlantic

The intriguing new theory suggests that the arrival of mobile phones made holding territory less important, which reduced intergang conflict and lowered profits from drug sales. Lena Edlund, a Columbia University economist, and Cecilia Machado, of the Getulio Vargas Foundation, lay out the data in a new National Bureau of Economic Research working paper. They estimate that the diffusion of phones could explain 19 to 29 percent of the decline in homicides seen from 1990 to 2000.

“The cellphones changed how drugs were dealt,” Edlund told me. In the ’80s, turf-based drug sales generated violence as gangs attacked and defended territory, and also allowed those who controlled the block to keep profits high. The cellphone broke the link, the paper claims, between turf and selling drugs. “It’s not that people don’t sell or do drugs anymore,” Edlund explained to me, “but the relationship between that and violence is different.”

It's often underestimated how much technology changed that ways of human relationships, and while I doubt cellphones entirely drove the drop in crime over the past two decades, all the evidence suggests that crime has dropped due to many different factors.

June 3, 2019 full morning update

It was a third of June, a most beautiful day. Listening to the Ode to Billie Joe as I take the local bus 🚍 to work wearing my freshly dry cleaned jacket. It says it’s around 61 degrees in bedroom this morning and warning up quickly. I think we are looking at 66 degrees in city and breezy later. Certainly wouldn’t be a nice day for swimming 🏊 but I know I’ll be walking 🚢 outside to the Capitol. Been so cold this year, I haven’t seen any daisies out — they often are out around now.🌼

I was thinking almost about wearing my outer coat to work as this evening πŸŒƒ it might be a a bit cold. Maybe if I decide to sit out back after work, I’ll have to wear my blaze orange hoodie. The calendar says it June but it’s hard to believe that this morning but it’s hard to believe. The heat and muggy weather will arrive eventually. They promise that at Wikipedia article for Albany, but that’s fine, I’m all for weekends at the Potholers.🏊 By then I should have my replacement hammock, and after spending a day cooling off in the potholers, I’ll be able to lay back in the hammock with a cold beer. I’ll have to see if I can use the non-ripped part of the hammock for some other project — I feel like I could use the nylon scraps for something besides tossing in the fire.πŸ”₯

For the third of June, the average high is 75 degrees. Sunset is around 8:28 pm with dusk at 9:02 pm. Hard to complain about that. πŸŒ‡ It has me thinking about that day on Independence Day Weekend when I hiked back to Ice House Pond at Moose River Plains after dark and it still wasn’t dark enough to require a flashlight πŸ”¦ at 9:30 pm at a clear, brilliant summers night. πŸŒƒ I really like this time of year especially when it’s nice out. Looking for taking a long Independence Weekend Trip to Moose River Plains. I probably should get a camping permit, although maybe what I’ll do is drive to Mason Lake on Wednesday night, then camp at the Plains Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night — so no need for a permit.πŸ• I wish you could just apply online.

It seems like the doubled set of accessory batteries πŸ”‹ is working well. I look forward to testing the set up at camp β›Ί. Probably not next week but maybe the week later. πŸ”Œ Speaking of electricity, I plan to finish the code for the outside temperature probe for my sign this week and look forward for the barometric pressure sensors to arrive and writing the storm warning code. If that works well, I might build a second portable unit, that I could have while camping to get warning when the pressure is dropping and a storm is approaching. I think that could be a handy tool, especially when I’m planning to be places with no cell reception or radar.Β  An LED could blink red when the pressure is quickly dropping, as a thunderstorm approaches.
