October 18, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 42 degrees. The skies will clear Wednesday around 1 pm.

I am back home 🏡 as it’s going to rain tomorrow in Central NY and quite honestly I don’t want to drive home at 5 or 6 pm tomorrow in the dark especially in rain. Plus working all day under a tarp or in the truck doesn’t seem like much fun.

To be sure, it was a beautiful weekend 🍂 even if clouds pushed in early on Sunday. No rain ☔ but it was cold on Cherry Ridge 🍒 Camping Area 🏕 and I didn’t have the whole area so I couldn’t listen to Jason Aldean as loud as I wanted 🎶 while getting drunk 🍻 next to roaring fire 🔥. But the fire was big enough for a while that I was plenty to warm next to it.

I am cleaning out the cooler now ❇️ and I’ll get things ready to put back in the crawl space by morning. Then things will be packed up. With the late sunrise 🌅 and my busy schedule I’m not planning any further trips ⛺ until November. This year I doubt I’ll have enough time to take a full week off of work though in November as I often do.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 12th. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 7% illuminated. The Blue 🌝 Moon is on Halloween 🦇 Saturday, October 31. After trick or treating and spread COVID-19 don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour 🕒 so you can sleep in one hour 🎃. The darkest hour is at 12:41 am, followed by dawn at 6:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:13 am in the east-southeast (103°) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:52 am with sun in the east-southeast (109°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 6 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 16th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 4pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 1992.❄

It looks like the weather will be better back home 🏡 and I can work down at the library most of the day. Another busy day ahead, I’m glad I won’t be trying to drive back 🚘 in the dark.

In four weeks on November 15 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (245°) at 4:32 pm (Standard Time),🌄 which is one hour, 35 minutes and 25 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 50 and 32 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 48 and 32 degrees. The record high of 74 degrees was set back in 1993.

Looking ahead, November 🥧 is in 2 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends 🛥️ is in 2 weeks, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 7 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day 🎅 is in 7 weeks, Bake Cookies Day 🍪 is in 2 months, Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄️ is in 11 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 is in 3 months, Martin Luther King Day 🖤 is in 3 months, Valentines Day ❤️ is in 17 weeks and National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 4 months.

Silage!

While I can capture the colors of autumn and the contours of the land on my blog, it’s impossible to capture the intoxicatingly sweet smell of silage in the rural countryside in the fall.

October 18, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to November 🥧. Partly sunny and 38 degrees at the Cherry Ridge Camping Area. There is a south breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. It’s already warmed up a lot from earlier when it was below freezing when I first woke up. But November is only two weeks away.

It’s a beautiful morning ☀ but cold with the breeze. I’m going to take down camp ⛺ shortly and go for a walk. Still chewing over my plans for the day. 💭

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 57 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. South wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 84 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 2015.❄

I am a bit undecided about today. 🐸 I am thinking about going down to Sherburne later and maybe staying up here one more night, leaving early Monday morning and heading home before the rain ☔ and work 💻. I guess it depends on how cloudy ⛅ and cool it becomes today. I might first go for a walk in the state forest. It really depends on how cold and cloudy is later. 🛏 Plus I don’t want to be shit tired 💩 come Monday at work as there is much to do. Sherburne and the Rogers Environmental Education Center is always nice.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:47 pm with sun having an altitude of 37.4° from the due south horizon (-33.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:36 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (251°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (257°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:15 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 6:42 pm, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-southwest (238°) at an altitude of 9° from the horizon, 227,276 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 7:16 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 53 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 45 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 2nd. South wind 13 to 15 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974.

I am a bit concerned it might be a very cold night ❄ with the wind if I stay one more night. Plus then it’s going to be a long trip back if a leave at quarter to seven in the morning – before sunrise 🌅. I might be a lot better off to stay until four pm this afternoon and drive home in daylight, maximize what I can before it gets dark out. That way I’ll get a good night’s sleep and be prepared for tomorrow.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until November 🥧 when the sun will be setting at 4:53 pm with dusk at 5:22 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

I plan to drop my absentee ballot off at the polling place during early voting

I plan to drop my absentee ballot off at the polling place during early voting 🗳

The governor’s executive order allows for that and its the easiest way for me to do it – I can just fill it out from the privacy of home and be in and out. No wait or delay.

There is no reason for me not to vote by absentee. None of this year’s elections are competitive this year, so ballot challenges are very unlikely. But more than that, the basic law around absentee voting is straight forward and if you follow the rules your ballot will be counted. And even if you don’t follow the rules, chances are still good your ballot still will be counted.

And truth be told, any individual ballot doesn’t matter much. Only collective opinions decides elections not individual voters. It’s good to register your opinions – that’s important in a democracy but your opinions are only one of many so don’t get wrapped up around them. Your own vote isn’t going to change the world. Certainly if voting wasn’t so easy with the early voting site a less than a quarter mile from home, I’d probably think twice – although I’d probably still vote because it’s important.
