Better Prepared then Many.

I think I am better prepared then many urban livers to eventually move to a rural town and live off-grid. I am no expert at the woods or the building trades, but I do camp a lot, grew up in rural area, and aren’t afraid of the wilderness.

I camp nearly year around, when there is snow, when it is hot and when it is cold. I have spent many a night in the woods, and while I’m not a big backpacker, I am certainly not afraid to spend time in the wilderness in remote country. I know how to manage my waste, be it poop or garbage, provide for myself, use portable equipment, heat with wood and work small-scale solar.

I have never had Internet or television at home, the number of electronics I have is relatively limited and most are quite energy efficient. I prefer getting my news off the radio, and limiting my internet access to using a smartphone or visiting the library.

I like working with electricity and small-basic electronics, soldering together various components. I understand ohm’s law, the meaning of energy and how much is used by my own uses. I have dabbled around with solar, adding solar power for camp, and have a realistic expectation on what a panel can produce. Solar is not unlimited, unlike grid power. I get it.

To be sure I do wish I had more of an expertise in the construction industry and doing more with my hands. I wish I knew more about codes and zoning, I was a better hunter and outdoorsman. But I can buy a pre-built structure, make improvements on it, piece by piece. And by no means am I cit-idiot.
