Are American Robins Really a Sign of Spring? | Audubon
Question: People always talk about American Robins being a sign of spring, but sometimes I see the birds year-round. And recently I learned that many robins don't even migrate. What gives?
KK: It happens every year. Between February and April, in birding listserves or on social media, some people will happily announce that they just saw their “first robin of spring.” And every year, others will respond by saying there’s no such thing, that robins are present at all seasons and that they shouldn’t be regarded as signs of spring.

Daily Update – April 1, 2022
Good morning! Happy Trout Season π£
River levels have to be raging after last night’s rain. But trout season isn’t a one day affair and indeed it’s April so don’t be fooled.
After last night’s heavy rain, just cloudy βοΈand 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. βοΈ
It wouldn’t be a bad day for fishing π£ if not for the high water levels and the fact that I have to work today. Friday often is the busiest day of the year where I work. π’ That said most of this week has been a bit of a busy week. I guess it makes up for all of the downtime earlier on.
Last night I got home around 6 π‘ had a quick dinner π² but the rain arrived before I could go for my evening walk. So I sat on the tailgate of my pick up π» and watched the rain come in before it really started to pour. Then I retired to bed around seven 7β£. I was tired as I keep waking up earlier and earlier. I honestly thought π it was going to be a much longer night at work.
Definitely a good rain storm last night π§οΈ, probably good for a few inches of rain and lots of sewer overflows in the cities. We ended up with above average precipitation for the month of March due to the rain.
I thought about going out to Rennselearville to fish and camp over night this weekend but water levels are high, going to be windy and very sunny on Saturday. β Plus I’m thinking of going up north or maybe to Central NY either thr following weekend or maybe Easter Weekend. βΊ
It might be another stay at home π‘ weekend. Probably too cold to paint Big Red but that’s fine. I get tired from the work week and like to rest on Saturday. Then maybe take a walk out to Five Rivers. π¦ Then maybe finish up my home work for the GIS class down at the library. π
I was thinking about going to the transfer station β» to drop off cans π₯« and bottles but I might wait as I’m the about seeing if there is some garbage or e-waste that I can purge. I haven’t taken anything to the transfer station as garbage on about ten years, preferring to burn or recycle most of it with an occasional gas station garbage can. But you sometimes end up with things like broken metal chairs or a broken snow shovel that don’t fit into any of those categories nicely. It’s nice when you don’t generate much garbage but you end up with a lot of broken shit. π
Been researching Park and Ride lots in Schenectady and bus schedules π as that might be a convenient alternative to facing rush hour traffic getting out of the city when heading up to the Adirondacks this summer. There is that CDTA 531 express to Saint Lukes and Woodlawn Park and Ride plus the limited stop CDTA 905. πI hate driving the Thruway at rush hour and while I would have to get an earlier start, most of the traffic would be going the opposite way plus I wouldn’t have to find street parking in Albany. Another possibility I saw was that CDTA is taking over or at least chartering Brown’s Amsterdam routes so I might be able to even park there. π Ώ
I don’t know about you but I’m glad April has returned. π· The greening up of things is always nice as is getting out of town βΊ and sleeping π΄ with the windows open π³. I’m sure with the rain last night and the relatively mild forecast for the week ahead it should accelerate the rate spring arrives. As much as I hate the black flies it’s nice to have nights in the wilderness by the fire with a cold beer π₯. And I’m really looking forward to laying in a lazy river with that big black truck intertube. β«
