In northern Minnesota, not much can beat the pristine view ??– and the rush – of climbing a fire tower. Reaching 100 feet into the sky, there were once nearly 150 of these steel lookouts guarding the state's fire-prone forests.
Today, only a handful of climbable towers exist and they remain on the front lines of fire prevention through education and an innate human desire to perch above the treetops.
Most fire towers in the U.S. were built in the 1930s. Staffed by generations of women and men trained to locate the first wisps of smoke, they were relied upon for over two decades as a critical line of defense against forest fires. In the 1950s, lookouts were replaced by airplanes.

Get a little bit of everything. But the real cold comes Monday into Tuesday, but I’ll just have to bundle up for work, and try to avoid waiting out for the bus too long in the morning, by using my phone to monitor real-time bus progress. And ultimately it doesn’t matter if I’m in the office how cold it is as they’ll have the heat turned up there. Then maybe some weather that feels more like late February for the second half of the week. Not warm but moderating.

A good bubble bath might be worthwhile today, last night was pretty darn cold, coldest night so far this year. Relatively speaking not that bad, and it’s actually going to warm up into the 20s later and not to be too bad. Tomorrow though will be real icy, wet and just awful. I fully expect Sunday will be a stay at home day.
Sunny and 15 degrees in Delmar, NY. π There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. π. The current wind chill is 4. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. β οΈThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. π‘οΈ
I am going out to Mom and Dad’s House πͺ for a Christmas lunch π with my sister and niece, π who were quaratined for Christmas over the COVID. None of them got it, but they were feeling a bit sick for a while and wanted to wait until their test results came back. COVID is everywheres these days, as is colds and all the usual that can be expected in the winter, but the muzzles π· certainly help on that front.
Afterwards, I want to do a quick hike up Bennett Hill πΆβοΈ before it gets dark, as I want to get my steps in as I think next week that will be difficult with the cold and having to dress up for work and take the local back and forth. That’s just going to happen in the winter, but hopefully it will be moderate before long.
Then go to Glenmont to wash my truck again πΏ π and get groceries before all the ice and road salt re-appears, not that isn’t already salty out enough. Maybe I won’t wash my truck, but I do want to be stocked up for groceries before the ice comes, as I don’t want any part of it next week.
Camping up there during the Columbus Day Weekend, hiking on some of the dirt roads and trails.
