Weather Update – December 18, 2021

A mixed bag later. 🌨 Then not so bad next week, but cool? 😎

As they say, slip sliding away. I’m staying home, although I might walk down to the library later. Not sure yet about tomorrow, but I am going to get propane soon, I tell myself. I was bad, didn’t do it last night. Seasonably cool but sunny for the week I have off. The question now is what to do for this coming week? Camp all week in the Finger Lakes? Go up to the Adirondacks a few days mid-week, and do some skiing and hiking? So many options. And Christmas is coming. πŸŽ„

Good Morning – December 18, 2021

Good morning! Happy Bake Cookies Day πŸͺ !

Hopefully they won’t come out as crispy as the ones I had made for work. Black cookies matter! They are still good globs of lard and sugar, despite maybe cooked a bit too long.

Cloudy and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. Snow, rain, ice and a general mixed back later, but not yet. ❄ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 2 pm. β˜ƒοΈ Slip sliding away.

I am going to head out to Tractor Supply 🚜 to get my propane tank filled and then test my stove and heater to make sure they are working properly again. Then probably tomorrow I’ll head out to the Finger Lakes National Forest β›Ί to camp for the balance of the week – I have it off and it would be nice to get away for a few days. I am going to watch the snow and ice predictions and then decide based on them my exact plans – I’m thinking the Finger Lakes but maybe Central NY or the Adirondacks.

One of the tallest trees in NY, an Adirondack white pine, has fallen | NCPR News

The white pine was known as Tree 103 and stood among 30-40 other large pines, all between 110-160 ft. tall on about 8 acres of land.

Dr. Justin Waskiewicz, a forest ecologist at Paul Smith's College, says a former professor at the college inspected the grove and dated the trees to 1665, making them more than 350 years old.

Waskiewicz says the oldest known age of a white pine is about 400 years, so the grove is nearing the end of its life. In 2013, the tree with the largest diameter in the grove fell. In 2019, Waskiewicz says "two more giants fell."
