June 28, 2021 8 AM Update
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Next Monday is Hottest Time of the Year π . That, said the heat is about a week early this year. Mostly sunny and 79 degrees in Delmar, NY. πThere is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. π. The dew point is 72 degrees. The muggy weather ends Saturday around 2 am. π.
Today will be mostly sunny and hot β, with a high of 92 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 8am. Heat index values as high as 99. South wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had haze in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1901.
What can I say, it’s going to be a hot summer day. π Don’t worry, the NYSDOT is already ordering tons of road salt for the next eight months of icy roads and sidewalks. It will be incredibly frigid in a few weeks as Labor Day is only ten weeks away. π·
I decided to work in the office today, π’ as they have air conditioning downtown and it would be incredibly hot to work from home. By the time I get home from work I figure it will cool down and I can go to the park or if it’s still really hot out, maybe I can go down to the library π as things are back to normal there.
Solar noon π is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6° from the due south horizon (-0.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 28 seconds with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look out for thunderstorms π© and temperatures around 87 degrees. The dew point will be 72 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 77. β± It will feel like a swamp. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 28 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms before 10pm. Partly cloudy π€, with a low of 72 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 8pm. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1981.
On this day in 1896, An explosion in the Newton Coal Company’s Twin Shaft Mine in Pittston, Pennsylvania results in a massive cave-in that kills 58 miners. π£ Also in 1969, Stonewall riots begin in New York City, marking the start of the Gay Rights Movement. Lots of explosive things happening on this day in history. π³οΈπ
I’ve heard different things about the weekend forecast, but I think it’s improving. π¦οΈ Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 1pm. Independence Day will have a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Monday, when most people have off, some clouds and possibly an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. High 77F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.
I wanted to head up to Piseco Powley Road for next long weekend, but with the current forecast doesn’t look that great, π so I might end up just doing the Nature Bus to Thacher Park with my hammock and book. Going for a swim up at Thompsons Lake was fine but I’m not sure if I am going to do that again as it’s lot of hiking and the swimming ain’t great there as the beach is small and muddy.
I might wait until next weekend, πβοΈ but if I do that I’ll have to decide if I should cancel my next therapy session. I am leaning towards it, because I am $125 in a can, and I’m not sure if it’s a good value proposition at this point. I feel like I talked about the things I need to talk about, and maybe I’ll look at a different mental health counselor in the autumn or winter, but I don’t see much value in investing more time and money at this point. π I did schedule an eye appoint for a week from Friday — same day in the morning, but if the weather is nice and I’m off to the Adirondacks, that’s also easy enough to reschedule — or I could do my eye exam first then go to the Adirondacks for a long weekend.
As previously noted, next Monday is Hottest Time of the Year π when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 91 and 62 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1919.

Me And White Supremacy author Layla Saad explains the work of undoing white supremacy and why being an ally isn’t enough. (This episode first ran in July 2020.)
I was listening to this podcast the other day. While it’s fairly brief, I will say it had some interesting insight and things worth thinking about.
Vermont 2020 Presidential Election
Biden won all of Vermont except Essex County in the Northeast Kingdom, which Trump got 53.9% of the vote. World is a different place since the days of Calvin Coolidge.Β
