He Fought to Make Weed Legal in New York City. Now What? – The New York Times
Dana Beal stood in Union Square Park explaining the provenance of the pot being given away to a crowd of expectant people who were gathering near a bronze statue of George Washington astride a horse.
He acknowledged that it might not be of the “green, fresh, aromatic, piney, incredibly potent” variety that is most popular. But it nonetheless possessed properties that would deliver a respectable high.
On top of that, Mr. Beal’s shrug seemed to say, it was free. He squinted into the sunlight, his white hair and generous mustache making him resemble a contemporary version of Mark Twain about to dispense a pithy insight.
“It’s just expired from the standpoint that nobody will buy it,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with it.”

May 3, 2021 Morning
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again for this first week of May. ๐ท Not going to be a real nice week but we are getting caught up on the rain โ. Two weeks to Average High is 70 ๐ฎ. Mostly cloudy and 51 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear Thursday around 2 am.
Not a terrible morning, ๐ฅ had a nice breakfast with pancakes and lots of frozen pineapple. Out for my morning walk now. ๐ท Its nice that being fully vaccinated ๐ that I don’t have to wear my muzzle any more outdoors. Yes, I’m aware that means life returning back closer to normal although truth be told, I think the world has changed.
Finally got my shorts and t-shirts out yesterday. ๐ Mainly because I was running low on clothes, but also because it’s finally got warm enough to be a bit more comfortable and save on the amount of wash I have. ๐ฟ I am looking forward to the nicer weather, although not so much the really hot weather of summer, although I expect I will be working in office more in coming weeks, and I’ll have to try to plan my weeks so I’m in the office on the really sweltering days. ๐ข
Yesterday, I went out for a walk at Papscannane Island Nature Preserve ๐ฆ and saw a lot of birds. I like going down to the river that way. It’s not too far from home. This time I didn’t go to Aldis ๐ช mainly because I needed some supplies from Walmart, so that’s where I ended up shopping. ๐ Got lots of good frozen fruit for my pancakes and shit. Didn’t have any last week, as I didn’t get any before going camping as you can’t really have frozen things up at camp. ๐ฝ Then I went out to the folks house for dinner.
Last night, in five seconds the dog last night shredded my freebee ball cap I got from work. ๐งข I wasn’t happy about that. Then he had my camera bag and camera in his mouth, but I pulled it out of that and yelled at him. ๐ What an ass. ๐ถ People ask why I hate pets so much — mainly because you can’t eat them and they are dead weight. It was kind of a nice hat but I think I will have to get a Carhartt one at Tractor Supply.
Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 2pm. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1986.โ
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 7:19 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (293ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:58 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:28 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:07 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ง and temperatures around 59 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have showers, mainly after 8pm. ๐ง Low of 52 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6pm. ๐๏ธ Southeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1985.
Kind of an unsettled weekend ahead. ๐ฆ๏ธ Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 59. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 61. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 42 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees. Not sure if I am going to get out of town this weekend. ๐ก I’ve been thinking about a Central NY trip, as there won’t be the black flies there but maybe not this weekend.
Been thinking about reducing my data plan down, ๐ฑ now that I am going to be working downtown more. ๐ข I was going to fully get rid of the 20 gb hot spot and unlimited mobile data come the expiration I three weeks with the nicer weather, the library fully reopening and work returning to full time downtown. Not sure if all those things will be true by then, I will revalue as time draws nearer. One option I’m considering is to save ten or 12 bucks by going to the 10 gb Hotspot plan with the unlimited mobile. I’m just not sure if Zoom is going away tomorrow.
Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until the average high is 70, and it’s Pack Rat Day ๐ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. Good day for a bonfire, get rid of all that accumulated burnable junk — the burn ban will be over, so get your big bonfire on. ๐ฅ Hot enough fire, that plastic crap doesn’t smell one bit. You didn’t hear that from me, I’m totally blaming the TikTok. ๐ผ On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.
