Plinking

Walking up through Partridge Run there, was a group of people doing some plinking. I like plinking too but in more remote country but I guess you do what you have near home. See a lot more people plinking in the woods these days with ranges closed due to the pandemic, which is fine as long as they are picking up their spent brass and targets and not destroying public property.

After the pandemic I should join a gun club to access to a range to practice more, especially in a formalized, controlled fashion at a target that is actually a more realistic range for hunting. Plinking is fun and cheap to do in the woods but you can only learn so much shooting on your own. And I really should join a birding club – and do bird hikes. I do a lot of birding and nature study on my own, but like with shooting the more you do with other people the better your skills get.

I value my independence a lot and doing my own thinga on my own time. I don’t want to spend a lot of money or get tied down with commitments. I like being able to go to the Adirondacks and spend time in the remote country whenever I want. But I should join more civic and community organizations so I can learn from others so I can better at the things I do.

Trust science, not scientists βš—οΈ

Trust science, not scientists βš—οΈ

Often I hear people say that they trust the science. Which is a fine and reasonable thing to say but often science and politics get mixed up as scientists want to draw conclusions based on their value system and ideological priorities rather than what research says. Fear of being labeled callous causes people to shy away from science and not being true their values. I believe in science but evidence needs to be taken in conjunction with our values and priorities.

I don’t really get the appeal of campgrounds

I don’t really get the appeal of campgrounds …. πŸ•

It just seems like a lot of people packed into a small space, with the possibility of many user conflicts. If you are going to pack so many people in a small space, you might as well stay home in the city.
