September 13, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday the Average High 70 🎑 . Partly sunny and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌤️There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 53 degrees. This morning is quite nice but not expected to last. Dark though when I get up with the later sunrise 🌅. At least with the pandemic smoldering all around us, it’s remote work 💻 come Monday so no getting up in the dark to rush to the bus to get to work. 🚍

I made blueberry muffins to have with my coffee ☕ this morning and are listening 👂🏻 to the news 📰 right now. I am going to walk out to Five Rivers 🐦 in a little bit for a couple of hours. Then this afternoon I have some work stuff to do. 🖥️ I also have some stuff I want to fix and improve on the blog. I do really need to get to the laundromat, 👚 but I need soap for that. Maybe on Monday. I have a Monday Zoom meeting 📽️ but I don’t want to do that while at the laundromat because they often stretch out for hours and that’s a problem when I’m trying to run to move along clothes..

I decided to trim my hair 💇🏻‍♂️ so that I can keep it a constant level. While I did 3/8th of an inch when I got the new clippers a few weeks back I decided that was too short so I’m going to stick with a 1/2 inch for now. Figuring I’m no longer doing the barber thing 💈, and clipping it at home I might as well do it every two or three weeks so it remains a constant length. Lots of gray hair popping up as I push 38 come January. 🧓🏻 Too much stress over finances and random car stuff. 😵 I also decided to take a shower 🚿 because I felt itchy although that was true before I cut my hair.

I am thinking soon I’ll need to turn back on the hot water heater. 💦 I usually turn it off when I’m on summer vacation or any extended trip and then during the heat of the summer it’s not needed because it’s usually pretty warm from the ambient air. But the days are getting cold now. No more 60 kWh a month electric bills like in the summer but having hot showers is nice. 🚿

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 70 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 21st. Maximum dew point of 61 at 5pm. South wind 7 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1948.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:52 pm with sun having an altitude of 51° from the due south horizon (-19.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:33 pm with the sun in the west (269°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (276°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:10 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:36 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:12 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 61 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 62 at 8pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 59 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963.

Most of the rest of the week looks sunny ☀ but below average temperatures so it will feel very autumn like. 🍂 Should be great for working outside either at the park or out back. I bet the leaves will really start popping soon at Moose River Plains. 🦃 That said, I’m not going to have time to get to Moose Plains this autumn as I need to be places where I have cell reception 📶.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Average High 70 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 6:55 pm with dusk at 7:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, skies patches of fog and temperatures between 79 and 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1946.

Warning of More Pandemics to Come, Public Health Experts Urge Collective Examination of What it Means to Live in ‘Harmony with Nature’ | Common Dreams News

As the world continues to adjust to lifeamidst Covid-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top infectious disease expert in the United States, recently pointedto human activityand a disregard of living in harmony nature with as a major accelerator of pandemics—part of a global chorus elevating such concerns.

"Covid-19 is amongthe most vivid wake-up calls in over a century," Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) wrote with medical epidemiologist David Morens, in a paper published last month in the scientific journal Cell. "It should forceus to begin to think in earnest and collectively about living inmore thoughtful and creative harmony with nature, even as weplan for nature's inevitable, and always unexpected, surprises."

Trump officials interfered with CDC reports on Covid-19 – POLITICO

The health department’s politically appointed communications aides have demanded the right to review and seek changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly scientific reports charting the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, in what officials characterized as an attempt to intimidate the reports’ authors and water down their communications to health professionals.

I am just very surprised 🤨 that Trump appointed the well known and infamous NY GOP political operative to oversee the CDC. 🐘 I get that the president wants oversight over the agency and emphasis on his campaign priorities but I don't like the idea of an explicit political hack running a scientific agency.

Why have we all been recycling plastic for 40 years? : Planet Money : NPR

Last year, Planet Money ran a show about why it doesn't make sense economically and, heartbreakingly, even environmentally to recycle plastic. But if recycling most plastic is not working now... and it didn't work 30 years ago when the numbers and arrows first popped up... did it ever work? And why did it take us so long to learn the truth? Today on the show, NPR reporter Laura Sullivan, with the support of PBS's Frontline, sets out to find out who is responsible.
