I think it’s fair to say that many of President Donald Trump’s views are racist, or at least excessively conventional and unwilling to accept the multicultural, diverse nation we are that benefits from trade and maintaining a strong relationship with other nations. I am hesitant to call anyone a racist, just because I think it’s important to judge ideas on their merits and not by labels.

To be sure, some of the policies that the president has called for reexamination are overdue but you have to wonder if his ideas are rooted in fairness and sound economics. There’s a case to be made that many are not rooted in those principles. But maybe it’s time for a change, to experiment and try new ideas. To be critical of existing institutions which haven’t necessarily served the American people well.

Arctic fires: “You have to go to a different planet to find a more persistent type” – Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

“Arctic fires—the combination of these two words is still an unusual term in my field of fire science,” says Guillermo Rein of Imperial College London. “Arctic fires are rare, but they’re not unprecedented. What is unprecedented is the number of fires that are happening. Never before have satellites around the planet seen this level of activity.”

Unprecedented, yes, but not unexplained. The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, leading to the desiccation of vegetation, which fuels huge blazes. Fortunately for us, these wildfires typically threaten remote, sparsely populated areas. But unfortunately for the whole of humanity, so far this year Arctic fires have released some 121 megatonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, more than what Belgium emits annually. That beats the previous Arctic record of 110 megatonnes of carbon dioxide, set in 2004—and we’re only in July.

Map: High Tor Wildlife Management Area

The High Tor Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of approximately 6,800 acres. It has numerous ecological habitats with many steep wooded hills, gullies, eroded cliffs, and wetlands. The largest part of High Tor WMA is approximately 3,700 acres just east of the Village of Naples and is primarily scenic, steep wooded terrain. It is intersected by administrative truck trails usable as foot access to the more remote sections of the area. Immediately north of this area are about 2,200 acres of lowland marsh, forested wetland, and grassland which lies between State Routes 21 and 245, bordering Canandaigua Lake and extending up West River valley. This area is drained by the famous Naples Creek. East of the southern end of Canandaigua Lake is a third part of the area known as South Hill. This portion is composed primarily of 900 acres of overgrown fields with steep wooded hillsides.
