The idea for the arena was inspired by the popularity of the livestock pavilion at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition. A local newspaper asked, as early as May 1935, "Why, when people are starving, should money be spent on a 'palace for cows'?" A headline writer turned the phrase around, thus "Cow Palace".

San Fransisco's Cow Palace was home to the Republican Convention in 1956 and 1964, two different showings of the Beatles, and several more contemporary artists including Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. It is still used for it's original purpose -- livestock shows.

I remember years ago working in the asbestos industry and learning how polluted the outside air is in cities from asbestos from automotive brakes being worn down.
