November 21, 2016 2 PM Update

At sunset, look for cloudy conditions with a chance of snow showers from lake effect bands moving east and 33 degrees. You will want to bundle up, as itΒ will feel much cooler with a windchill around 20. Β That 33 degrees will be combined with a stiff breeze at 26 mph, with west-northwest with gusts up to 47 mph. The sun will set at 4:27 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 41 seconds earlier than yesterday.

November 21, 2016 9 AM Update

Good morning! Talk about a chilly November day. They don’t make many like this anymore. Mostly cloudy and we’ve warmed up a degree to 32 degrees in Delmar. Still pretty frigid for November especially with the wind whipping around. Breezy, 18 mph breeze from the west-northwest with gusts up to 32 mph. The current wind chill is 20. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 pm.

Today’s forecast has little to cheer for especially in the mountains where they have gotten a lot of snow. In the city we’ve only got a dusting which has  will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high of 35 degrees at 12pm. 10 degrees below normal. Windy, with a west wind 18 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

The sun will set at 4:27 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 31 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 30 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 20 mph. One year ago, mostly cloudy with a low around 34. The record low of 9 occurred back in 1969.

Listening to Thomas Rhett’s Beer with Jesus, which seems appropriate as the bus grinds downtown. It’s actually comforting to feel the motion of the bus as I return to commuting downtown. While I liked the change of working in North Syracuse, it’s nice to return to normalcy of days gone past. I like the quiet time I have to myself without the dangers of car commuting. The bus though  is kind of warm. Assuming it’s not too frigid, I’ll probably walk down to the express bus come Tuesday.

Thursday is Thanksgiving and I’m hopeful that they will give us Black Friday off as a holiday. If not, that’s fine too. The weather is not expected to be real nice on Friday and the buses are unlikely to crowded or delayed come Friday. It would likely be quiet day. I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.

Have a great day. I’m almost to work….

November 21, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again on this frigid morning. Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Cold morning. The current wind chill is 20. Brr. Some of the untreated surfaces like sidewalks and driveways may be slick. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 pm but continued cold.

Last year, partly cloudy with a high around 48. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. There was 0.8 inches of snow back in 1937. We won’t break that record in Albany today most likely but who knows, we’ve already gotten a half inch. The mountains and hills around have gotten much more snow.

There was 3.4 inches of snow back in 1961.

The past 24 hours I’ve been unpacking and recovering from my trip. Somehow the trip just seemed so exhausting. The nights were long and I was constantly running from place to place, setting up and tearing down campsites, especially in the dark. While I stayed at the Finger Lakes National Forest and the East Otto State Forest for two nights, the rest of the time I was setting up and taking down camp. To make matters more complicated I set up a tent nearly every day.

I continue to struggle updating my blog without my laptop, but I see that the Lenovo Laptop Flex 4 I’ve been looking at is on sale for $500. It’s the best price I’ve seen in a while, and while maybe there are better deals for black Friday, I think I may just go with it now. Based on what I’ve read, it should mostly work with Linux out of the box. But I want to research a bit further — the 256 GB SSD drive will be fast, but it will mean I have to store some of my files on the portable hard drive. But I guess that’s fine. I really would like to be back in business on being able to fully update my blog.

There are 5 weeks until Christmas when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 5:00 pm. The average high temperature is 33 degrees, with a record high of 66 in 1889. At that point the days will be starting to get longer and we are almost to the coldest time of the year — which happens in early January.
