November 25, 2018 Night

Good evening! Foggy and 34 degrees in Delmar. 🌁 The fog is mostly above the ground, noticeable but didn’t really impact my drive home. Calm wind. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 1 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Tonight will have patchy fog before 1am, then patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌁, with a low of 32 degrees at 2am. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around November 16th. Calm wind. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1938.

I got working on a soldering project and ended up missing my evening walk. Too bad, despite the fog, it seems like a pretty decent evening. 😑 I also took my laptop apart so when I decide to go for the ssd hard drive expansion I should be able to do it. I was concerned it might be difficult to disassemble the laptop without the plastic snaps but that turned out not to be an issue. A bigger problem is that I discovered that the laptop is missing screws and the ones I have around won’t fix, so I am going to have to order them.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 89% illuminated. The moon will set at 10:21 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies. The Cold Moon 🌝 is on Friday, December 21st. The sun will rise at 6:59 am with the first light at 6:28 am, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 35 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 41 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 10am, then rain. Patchy fog before 9am. 🌧 High of 42 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around November 29th. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1979. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

Doesn’t look like it will be wet to start out the day, β˜” but I’m going to want my rain coat for later. I may swing by Resins house later on to help with folding the newsletter 📬 and getting that ready to mail.

It looks so nice and clean now that I cleaned up and organized by the heaters and cleaned off my desk and dressers. 🐷 Too warm for the electric heat but when it gets cold again I should be able to turn it on without worrying. Next thing I should tackle is the closet as I noticed that has become increasingly disorganized. 👕

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 38. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I might head north on Saturday or somewhere else, but I am a bit concerned about the risk of ice up north on Sunday.

In four weeks on December 23 the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm,🌄 which is one minute and 6 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had freezing rain, cloudy skies and temperatures between 36 and 25 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. The record high of 64 degrees was set back in 1990.

Looking ahead, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 1 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year βŒ›οΈ is in 2 weeks, Festivus 🍖 is in 4 weeks, Christmas Eve 🌲 is a month away, Christmas 🎅 is a month away, 5 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 2 months, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 15 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 16 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 19 weeks, Palm Sunday 🌴 is in 20 weeks, Easter 🐰 is in 21 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 23 weeks, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 24 weeks and Fathers Day 👨 is in 29 weeks.

I better get some sleep as a busy day is ahead of me tomorrow. 👔

Edge of the Field

My laptop is missing screws again.

My laptop is missing screws again. This seems to be a problem with nearly every laptop I’ve ever owned. I had laptop screws from another laptop I ordered extra for years ago but the screws from the IBM and Samsung don’t fit my HP. I guess I’m screwed, I’ll have to order another set online. πŸ”©

The upside is that I discovered the issue and was able to easily access the insides of the laptop for upgrading to an M2 based SSD drive. So not all bad.

Greens and Yellows

Percent Of Households In 1959 Which Made Less Then $4k/year

The $15 minimum wage works out to $31,200 per year, if a worker works 40 hours a week. That works out to $3,800 in 1959 dollars. So how many Capital Region residents in 1959 made less then $15/hour, inflation adjusted? This map takes a look at income in the Capital Region in 1959.

Cleaned Up the Heaters

Finally cleaned out around the electric baseboard heat in my bedroom. What a pain in the ass, but very much needed. The paper hornets nest wasn’t as big of a deal around the heater as I thought it was going to be, I don’t think it posed that much of a fire risk, being at the back of the unit and there wasn’t much evidence of any hornets coming out when I turned on the heat, but it’s totally gone now and cleaned up.

Found a shotgun shell on one of the radiators and some wires, so it’s good I didn’t turn the heat on and have a melty mess or one that could go bang. So much dust and random junk, although a lot could go to paper recycling or be cleaned up and put in it’s proper location. Shit falls behind the dresser and desk when they’ve not been moved for over 11 years at this point.

I don’t think it posed that much of a fire risk, as I only use the electric heat occasionally when I’m home, and the outside of the heaters don’t get that warm (although one melted a transformer sitting on it), but it’s safer being clean. I made sure no wires run close to the heater.

Hopefully with the dust vacuumed off the radiators things will work well and not stink too bad the first few times I turn them on. This often is an issue the first few times of the year – just kind of musty and mildewy like the rest of my apartment. I have the gas heat downstairs which works fine in ordinary winter weather – down to the teens or so – but when it gets really cold it has trouble keeping up for the upstairs.

The electric heat, unlike the gas heat, is very quick, so if I turn the heat down to 50 degrees during the day time when I’m at work or during the night, I can take the chill quickly off my bedroom when I get home from work or wake up.

I’ve never been a fan of heat. I like it cold in my bedroom, rarely turning the main heat above 55 degrees except in exceptionally cold weather or when I’m home for an extended period. I guess in very cold weather I’ll turn the downstairs heat up to 60 degrees, but it overrides by quite a bit upstairs in moderate weather, and I don’t like it much about the low 60s, or I get hot and uncomfortable. Keeping it cold saves money, and makes the outdoors less cold in the winter when I go for walks, or head out to work and play. Plus saves money, which is good because I’m trying to save and invest every spare penny so eventually I can own land.

Red Sky in Morning

November 25, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday is First Sunday of Advent ✝️. Rain and 39 degrees in Voorheesville. β˜” There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Today will rain, mainly before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 44 degrees at 1pm. Typical for today. Not great weather but so be it. West wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2004. 21.8 inches of snow fell back in 1971.❄

The sun will set at 4:25 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 33 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 andtemperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 42 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 32 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around November 16th. Light and variable wind. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1938.

Yesterday, I went for a nice walk to Voorheesville via the rail trail. 🏃Walking is healthy and it avoids motoring. I try to drive as little as possible, especially in the winter. Gasoline is expensive, no sense in wasting it when there are places to walk to locally. I’m trying to save money wherever possible avoiding unnecessary trips and making affordable meals, turning down the heat and lights off.

I want to get up to woods and camp and maybe hunt next weekend but not until big game season is over and I can have the woods to myself. Or mostly over in the sense of the northern zone. β›ΊI don’t like sitting on a ridge looking across the way to other hunters. I guess if I didn’t live in the suburbs and did deer I’d feel another way. The forecast looks nice for Saturday but again I’m concerned about the Sunday forecast. It’s possible that I don’t get away until spring time. 🌄

I built and tested on a breadboard the Bluetooth control for the light over my bed. It works well, :idea:although when I build the final version I want to use thicker wire with less resistance as this will provide more power to the LEDs and more brightness. Using the thin Dupont cables to power it cut both power consumption and brightness in half. Took several tries to get the code right and eventually I would like to write a custom Android app to control everything from my phone. But for now the Android Bluetooth Controller app works fine.

I still haven’t attempted to disassemble my laptop 💻to see how truly difficult it will be to access the M.2 slot for adding the SSD drive. I’m very low on disk space and while I could delete files I think an SSD drive is a good thing to speed up my laptop as a midlife overhaul. Once I get my laptop opened successfully I’ll keep an eye out on Cyber Monday to see if there is a good price on a one TB drive.

As previously noted, next Sunday is First Sunday of Advent ✝️ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1998.

I was reading a book about the Catholic Workers and Roger Laporte. I wonder how the media would cover his death today? Would it be seen as a national tragedy, a brave act of protest against injustice and the war, or just another crazy religious person who committed a serious crime against himself?
