October 4, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Tomorrow starts the autumn road trip, ๐Ÿ‚ which was perfectly planned until it wasn’t. I guess you can over plan life. It’s really silly ๐Ÿ˜‹ to get all stressed out by a plan. I can just drive and I’ll end up somewhere in Pennsylvania or West Virginia or Western NY. Four weeks to November ๐Ÿฅง. Partly cloudy and 50 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I am really struggling on the trip plan,ย but after reviewing the evidence, I’ll probably go out to Allegheny National Forest for the weekend, and then either head north to Cattaragaus County and small-game hunt ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ and hike up there, or maybe go down to West Virginia for a few days, if they get some rain and the drought weakens.๐Ÿ”ฅ I guess I don’t really need to have a fire when I’m down there, but the dust on the dirt roads might not be nice, ๐ŸŒช especially when your trying to drink coffee in camp. โ˜• But while I’m in the Alleghany National Forest, especially when it’s raining, going to have some nice fires. Andย I’ll figure it out one day at a time.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 57 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. Maximum dew point of 46 at 8am. North wind 9 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1891. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 1987.โ„

The sun will set at 6:32 pm with dusk around 7:00 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have areas of frost after 5am. Otherwise, mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 4th. North wind 3 to 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will have areas of frost before 9am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 15th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1941.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers, mainly after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. South wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. โ˜” Maximum dew point of 56 at 9pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 64 degrees.

Tonight I will go to the laundromat ๐Ÿ‘• and then maybe to Delmar hardwareย to see if I can get a small shovel to use as a good shovel for burying poop and other organic waste up at camp. ๐Ÿฅ„ I don’t want something too big, but I need a better camp shovel then my trowel, so I can get my poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ dug deeper and be able to do more camp projects — I might want to dig a few places for the rain to drain out, as it’s going to pretty wet at camp on Sunday into Monday. ๐ŸŒง I so hate finding toilet paper in the woods, ๐Ÿงป the only thing worse is finding broken glass. ๐Ÿฅƒ

I also need to stop somewhere and get more lantern mantles. ๐Ÿฎ Probably Walmart in Oneonta is the easier thing for that. I also need firewood,๐ŸŽ‹ I’ll get the bagged stuff, especially if I’m driving all the way to Allegheny National Forest after visiting some state parks, being October, it will probably be close to dark by the time I set up camp, if not already dark.๐ŸŒƒ

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until November ๐Ÿฅง when the sun will be setting at 5:48 pm with dusk at 6:17 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 59 and 48 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

My theory on why it’s been so cold and wet this spring in Albany.

My theory on why it’s been so cold and wet this spring in Albany.

  1. They moved the primary to June.
  2. The city’s muggers and pick pockets don’t like to work in hot and humid weather as it keeps people home next to the air conditioning rather then out where they can be easily robbed.
  3. Muggers would protest the muggy weather, embarrassing local politicians that have primaries in June.
  4. Local politicians have ordered the NY State OEM Weather Authority (a little known state agency) to dial down the heat and humidity.

May 14, 2019 Night

Good evening! No need to repeat the weather conditions except to say I needed my umbrella on the way home and it’s around 43 degrees โ˜” There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Rain and more rain. At least I work indoors but it doesn’t make the weather any less depressing. ๐Ÿ˜” The Youtube farm channels I follow show a lot of muddy livestock, and farmers frustrated that they can’t get out in the fields.

Very busy day today at work, ๐Ÿ’ผ I got home around 8:45 after taking the 8:15 home. Hopefully in five weeks when the legislative session wraps down it won’t be so crazy at work and I’ll be able to get home by 5:45 most nights and then I can go to the park with a book.๐Ÿ“” Between work and the wet, rainy nights, I’ve only been out once night so far this year reading. But it’s also been a particularly crazy year this year at work.๐Ÿ˜ซ

I made up some pasta with tuna fish and mayo. ๐Ÿ  Simple, easy inexpensive meal. I also don’t have a lot of choices at home right now for food although fortunately tomorrow is the Pine Bush Dinner. ๐ŸŒฒBeen so busy I kind of totally forgot about it all. I got to work on the Pine Bush display for Saturday on Thursday night. I am really running low on veggies at home,๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿ…ย I guess I could open up some canned stuff. ๐Ÿฅซ

Tonight will rain before midnight, then a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 2am. Patchy fog between 4am and 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 38 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 18th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 90% illuminated. The moon will set at 4:05 am. The Flower ๐ŸŒธ Moon ๐ŸŒ• is on Friday night wait for it…..scattered showers. The sun will rise at 5:33 am with the first light at 5:01 am, which is one minute and 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 4 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Northwest wind 5 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Despite the sun, it will feel cold. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

I have to think things are going to end badly with Trump’s tariffs ๐ŸŒŽbut only time will tell. I feel like a recession might be better for me in the short term and maybe for the country as a whole as it leads people to be more cautious and makes buying into the markets more affordable. That said the Trump supporters are not wrong when they say the tarrifs are a relatively small tax compared to the many others out there, the economy is very healthy and inflation is very low. ๐Ÿ’ฃ I’m ready to see what happens as it may lead to a lot of re thinking about economics.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of Trump and I think a lot of his thinking and policies don’t correspond with reality. ๐Ÿ’ญ That said I’m hardly enthusiastic about the national democrats and if anything I’m looking at third party candidates for president. I voted for Bernie in the primary in 2016 but I’d hardly call myself an enthusiastic supporter of him and less so in 2020. I do like Trump’s first appointment to the Supreme Court and his tax cut but at least I wish he would acknowledge that climate change is problematic and getting worse and that we should be an international leader not a bully.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 46 at 6am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 53 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

Maybe Sunday I’ll have to think about doing some hiking somewhere. ๐Ÿšถ Not too far from home though as Memorial Day Weekend if it’s nice ๐Ÿ˜† I plan to head north. But I know that’s unlikely. It will probably rain and be cold unless there are thousands of black flies.

In four weeks on June 11 the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 23 minutes and 13 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 55 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, Flag Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is a month away, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 6 weeks, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 2 months, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 9 weeks, Altamont Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is in 3 months, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 18 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 20 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 77 weeks.

April 24, 2019 11 AM Update

Good morning! What day is it? Get-Away Hump Day, of course. Heading up North for probably two days camping once work is done today. Next Wednesday is May ๐Ÿ•Š. Mostly cloudy and 52 degrees in Albany. โ˜ Breezy, ๏ธ18 mph breeze from the west ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 30 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 58 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 15th. Breezy, with a west wind 18 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

The sun will set at 7:47 pm with dusk around 8:17 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 54 degrees. Breezy, 17 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 28mph. Today will have 13 hours and 49 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 38 seconds over yesterday.

So I am packed and planning to leave for the Adirondacks after work today. โ›ฐ Tomorrow looks absolutely beautiful, not so much so for Friday. But I’ll take a what I can get. The forecast earlier in the week looked quite nice, but it has slipped down hill.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear โ˜, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light west after midnight. Going to be fairly cool, especially up north, but I have my heater with me if I need to warm up in the morning. But definitely warmer then camping in the Finger Lakes last December. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 23 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. Light and variable wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. .3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

I think I will have a great day hiking and camping tomorrow, plus two nights camping, ๐Ÿ• maybe do some plinking with the .22 tomorrow around camp, followed by fishing on Friday.ย  Maybe spend some time around camp reading, listening to music and just relaxing. As turkey season ๐Ÿฆƒ ain’t open for another week, I should have the wilderness all to my own, bar maybe one of the forest rangers stopping in to say hi tomorrow, if I’m still at camp and not hiking at that point.

ย I am thinking about coming home on Friday morning, ๐Ÿ if it’s going to be as wet as they say. I have certainly spent a lot of nights in the wilderness when we’ve gotten in an inch of rain, and I would be willing to stay through the weekend, if it wasn’t expected to be so cold and generally not that great on Saturday. I have the heater and tarps, but I don’t want to be curled up next to the heater all day Friday, dealing with tarps that are getting saturated and dripping.โ˜” I’ve just spent too many very wet days camping, and it’s fun but not that much fun, especially in the spring.

But still, it’s nice to get away for a few days. I have Friday off from work, so I can take things down and take a nice easy drive back. If it’s not raining too hard, I’ll do some fishing. Saturday, I might do a hike locally, maybe I’ll drive out somewhere or maybe just walk to Five Rivers for more nature study. ๐Ÿฆ I don’t know, with the breeze and dampness it’s going to be cold on Saturday, even if it’s sunny. After an inch of rain everything is going to be all mud. I bought some inexpensive farm boots yesterday, but I still don’t want to be in really sticky nasty mud if I can avoid it. I really have enough clothes and food for four days in the wilderness, but I doubt will be up there the whole time.๐Ÿ”Š

As previously noted, next Wednesday is May ๐Ÿ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.

In four weeks on May 22 the sun will be setting at 8:17 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 13 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 63 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 71 and 49 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1911.

Looking ahead, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 1 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is a month away, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 6 weeks, Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 2 months, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Altamont Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is in 16 weeks, State Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is in 17 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 4 months, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 20 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 22 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 91 weeks.

 Don\'t Look Down

April 14, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Palm Sunday ๐ŸŒด! Next Sunday is Easter ๐Ÿฐ. Cloudy and 50 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 pm.

This morning I decided to walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ, like I’ve been doing the past few weekends. I prefer it to the rail trail as you never see anybody walking out here and there is a lot more nature and interesting quiet places here then along the rail trail. Lots of birds ๐Ÿฆ chirping around, I saw the Ground Hog again. I timed myself this morning โŒ›took almost exactly 40 minutes to walk out here, a 2.4 mile walk at 3.7 mph. Walking is such a good healthy activity.

Today will have a chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 25th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming east around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 1968. 1.4 inches of snow fell back in 1950.โ„

I’m heading over to John Wolcott’s house this afternoon. ๐Ÿ“‚ I’m on the fence about taking the bus ๐Ÿš versus driving ๐Ÿš˜ but I think the easiest and most environmentally friendly way is to bus it. I mean regardless of if I ride it, the bus is going downtown. I really try to do whatever I can to avoid motoring.

The sun will set at 7:36 pm with dusk around 8:05 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 56 degrees. Definitely a lot rain seen in the radar, Buffalo is getting soaked today. Won’t be much field work getting done in Western NY today. ๐ŸšœThe dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 54 degrees at 8pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 12am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southeast wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1940.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Easter ๐Ÿฐ when the sun will be setting at 7:44 pm with dusk at 8:14 pm. On that day in 2018, we had sunny and temperatures between 60 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1923.

I am hoping for one nice day during Easter Weekend ๐Ÿฐ to get out and hiking. Platte Clove is still on the top of my list ๐Ÿ“ƒ but there are other options. So many trails are wet and muddy ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿท this time of year.
