January 1, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear around 11 pm.

Not a half bad evening for early January, I went out for the evening walk and then laid back in my bed catching up on my YouTube. 📹Mostly just the latest kind of silly update from Keith Fink dairy farm and their silly Jersey cows 🐮.

I had a nice New Years Day fondue with the parents and did my wash out there before coming home. 🍲 There was a crash on Route 32 so it was closed and I ended up being detoured over through Clarksville on the way home. It was fine but the road was dark after my exhaustion from last night I found the driving hard 🚘. Since adjusting my headlights night driving isn’t as bad but I still don’t really enjoy it.

It’s nice to be back home but I did enjoy my night out during the first night of the new year. 🎇 Granted that I only stayed out by the fire until quarter to eleven, then retiring to the warmth of the tent until midnight. Still not sure if I dosed off a bit in the tent before waking up shortly before midnight but it was watching the clock flip over to midnight and then shut off the heater and lights and retire to bed just like I plan to do shortly.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 26 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 16th. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 40% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the south (178Β°) at an altitude of 42Β° from the horizon, some 252,272 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 Keeps getting farther away. Before you know it, you’ll have to plan an extra vacation day to dance on the moon. 🌕 The moon will set in the west (264Β°) at 11:04 pm. The darkest hour is at 11:59 pm, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (121Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 24 seconds. Sunrise is 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:12 am with sun in the southeast (129Β°) at an altitude of 6Β°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. I’ll take a sunny mid March like day in January. Too bad it couldn’t happen when I had it off. South wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

I am thinking about washing my truck 🚿 tomorrow and going to the store although maybe if it’s going to rain on Friday or Saturday those would be better days once the salt is off the roads. The truck is so muddy from Madison County and so salty from driving up to Cole Hill. It really was a fun trip between the two nights but certainly different than the Finger Lakes trip I had originally envisioned. β›Ί

Somehow that said, I really liked getting away to Madison County. 🐮 It was just so muddy and brown this time of year but I kind of liked the rural character and how different it is from Albany. I just like seeing all the run down houses and farms, they’re real compared to the city, even if the farm country did have a very distinctive barnyard and wood smoke smell this time of year. Plus I like having my truck for camping – it’s a lot of work to drag my gear back to camp that half mile back I was camping last night. πŸ’‘ Plus I like all the pretty Christmas lights although with my fully working gas lantern 🏮 it’s not that bad. That said camping last night was more fun than staying home. I really should think about getting back to Moscow Hill later in the winter, especially if they don’t have a ton of snow out there.

I did have quite a bit of trouble with the sled flipping hauling gear out. 💥Not sure the problem, I’m thinking I didn’t have the center of gravity low enough and the snow was cold and icy this morning unlike last night 🌃. Plus the tent poles were icy and I might have been a bit out of it from the previous late night. The propane tank is about half full now so it was sloshing around quite a bit. I got a late start too as I’ve been enjoying sleeping in lately.

I did notice some aching in my knee again today and my arm where I got the tick bite🙋. Mom thinks I should call 📞 the doctor 😷 and see about an appointment now and if I feel better before the visit cancel it. I’ve not been as sick as before I had the course of doxycycline but I do feel like at times I have the residuals of Lyme. I think I should make my health care a greater priority in the coming year – I really need to overcome the Lyme disease and start getting regular physicals and maybe start doing more high intensity exercises besides riding the exercise bike and walking. 🚲 I like the idea of doing more backpacking and back country camping β›Ί.

I’m also thinking about getting some mental healthcare this year. 💭 I’m learning more about how having good mental health can improve productivity and mood, plus it would be good to have somebody to bounce idea off of – what to do with my truck when tires wear out – do I keep having a truck, do I stay in Albany, do I go somewhere else and do something new in my life? My dreary basement office 🏢 is just so depressing. I keep learning about how many interesting opportunities there is out west, but am I too afraid to take the jump? 😐 People have told me that I have depression and some of my frustration with the way things are going are due to it. Plus if the Lyme gets worse, rather than better counseling may be helpful. Just a stupid tick bite. 🐜

In four weeks on January 29 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246Β°) at 5:04 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 55 seconds later then tonight. That’s my 37th birthday. In 2019 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. That was kind of busy, long day for me last year at work, hopefully now with my new 9-5 job it won’t be such a late night. Heck, maybe even get some of those drink specials after work. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 15 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 2002.

Looking ahead, Bubble Bath Day 🧼 is in 1 week, 37th Birthday 🎉 is in 4 weeks, February 🌧 is a month away, March 🌨 is in 2 months, Average High is 40 β˜€οΈ is in 9 weeks, April Fools Day 🤡 is in 3 months, Pink Moon 🌕 is in 14 weeks, Tax Day 💰 is in 15 weeks, Earth Day 🌎 is in 16 weeks, May 🕊 is in 4 months, June 🍹 is in 5 months, Latest Sunset 🌆 is in 25 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 👴🏻 is in 55 weeks.

December 31, 2019 Night

Good evening on this final blog post of 2019 ! Cloudy and 31 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest in Berne on this New Years Eve. ☁ We had a thunderstorm with some brief lightning and snow. ⚑ ❄ It was windy and intense for about five minutes and then it got quiet. There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. There is about 4 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

It’s hard to believe that New Years Day is only a few hours away and it will be 2020. 🎇 To think it’s already the twenties when not all that long ago it was year 2000 and I was back in High School. I’ll be waking tomorrow to a brand new decade. Although it’s already basically 11 o’clock now and I could if I wanted to stay up the next hour listening to a podcast until midnight. I was outside by the fire until 10:30 when a snow squall and the breeze made me decide to jettison the cold ❄ outside for a nice warm tent 🎪. Maybe I will stay up to midnight 🕛, I’m in no rush to take down camp as things with the dropping temperatures are likely to be frozen early in the day until the sun comes out. Simple breakfast of instant oatmeal 🍚 and coffee β˜• for breakfast tomorrow and then it’s just a 20 minute drive home.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 7th. Even warmer back in the city. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. A few good gusts earlier for sure with that winter thunderstorm. The wind is a bit concerning with the ice on the trees being thrown or broken limbs but my campsite is relatively free of widow makers. 🍃 Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. I was up at Cherry Ridge last year and I left the night before because I was worried 😯 about the road being slippery when the ice turned to mud. In retrospect, should have done Moscow Hill horse 🐴 camp instead. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 31% illuminated. At dusk you’ll see the moon in the south (190Β°) at an altitude of 37Β° from the horizon, some 251,948 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀It was kind of a pretty moon tonight and it seems like my astrological calculations are right. The moon will set in the west-southwest (257Β°) at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:00 am (the beginning of the decade), followed by dawn at 6:55 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:27 am in the east-southeast (121Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:13 am with sun in the southeast (129Β°) at an altitude of 6Β°. Tonight will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 42 seconds over last night.

New Year’s Day 🎇 will have isolated snow showers after 8am. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 34 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 22nd. West wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1966. 9.2 inches of snow fell back in 1961.❄

This year my New Year Resolution is to stay the course 🚢and continue to build a better life for myself. I want to keep saving money towards buying land and an off grid cabin. I might stay in New York for another decade but when the time comes, I want to be prepared. I’ll have to see if Big Red needs repairs and decide on my future of motoring 🏁 or if I should try a life with more biking and local adventures. Sure these winter camping adventures are kind of fun but motoring is so expensive and bad for both the environment and ones health. I probably also drink and eat too much unhealthy food while camping although this time ⌚ I intentionally limited my drinking by packing less beer 🍻 being that I’m out in the real wilderness in the cold. That and I drunk most of it earlier in the week. β›Ί That said, this coming year I plan to spend many nights in the woods and maybe even so a bit more wilderness camping.

In four weeks on January 28 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246Β°) at 5:04 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had sunny weather and but rather cold temperatures between 22 and 8 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 15 degrees. The record high of 56 degrees was set back in 1916.

Looking ahead, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is in 2 weeks, Martin Luther King Day 🖤 is in 3 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 is in 6 weeks, National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 7 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 11 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 14 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 18 weeks, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 25 weeks, Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 44 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 44 weeks.

Good evening! Cold and damp and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 10 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

We got some pretty good icing midday β›„ so I’m kind of glad that I stayed home. The commute home in the ice and slush could have been miserable. Never got to upload my photos from my trip as the library was closed. 📙 My truck is not solid froze with ice. I know they predicted it in the outlying areas but I didn’t expect any ice in Delmar. I’ll deal with it eventually. I haven’t been shopping yet this week so I do got to kind of dig it out.

The record high of 61 was set in 1895. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 2007.❄

I looked at a lot of dash cam videos and photos 📷 to share on my blog over the coming days when I get a chance to upload them. I want to better tell my story and how seeing the open farm country and rural lands really made me feel. It was so nice to get away and out of the basement where I work, even if I didn’t make it to the Finger Lakes. I also have been getting really interested in the path of moon and sun and are going to incorporate more astrological data into my blog 🎑 in the coming weeks.

I am leaning towards backcountry camping tomorrow night 🌃 to close out the decade but that’s to be decided in the morning. 🎇 I think they’re is enough snow and ice left out in the hilltowns to drag my gear back on a sled. I’ll have a nice fire 🔥 and toast out the end of the decade. I might even buy some egg nog or hot coca to have around the fire. It will be a simple campsite with the heater to keep me plenty warm. Too much ice and snow might make it hard to get a fire going. Not a done deal though for sure.

December 29, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a east breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Back home on this rainy evening. It would have been fairly miserable camping tonight and it looks like we are stuck in this rainy pattern for a while, then it will get cold. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Wednesday around noontime. β˜ƒοΈ

I got home and unpacked. 💼 Not too difficult as my gear didn’t get that muddy and I only had one day worth of food and clothing packed. Moreover I’ve been leaving more and more of my camping gear in the truck year round and I have seperate cooking utensils now for at home versus at camp. 🍴 I had fish for dinner 🐠 and started looking at storing the dash cam photos and videos 📹 I got. Tomorrow I’ll walk down to the library and upload them if it’s not raining too hard. It’s kind of nice that I don’t have to work tomorrow.

Tonight will rain before 1am, then rain or freezing rain. 🌧 Low of 33 degrees at 10pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 12th. East wind around 6 mph. Tomorrow will rain or freezing rain before noon, then rain between noon and 4pm, then rain and sleet after 4pm. High of 34 degrees at 12pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 22nd. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1984. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.❄

I have tomorrow off because the original plan had me out camping. β›Ί It will be a bit of a staycation I guess. Tuesday if there is still snow left in the hilltowns I’m thinking to a local state forest to back country camp in a hot tent for New Years Eve 🎇 but the key 🔑 is I need snow on the ground and roads not too icy for that to happen. No guarantees at this point.

I do want to do more winter camping for sure. Ideally I’d prefer to stay somewhere I can drive my truck to so I have electric πŸ’‘ and gear nearby but that’s not a show stopper for me. I’m really interested to find out if Moscow Hill campground is plowed, as that would be perfect even if it’s just far enough to get off the road. That said, I bet there are a lot of snowmobiles that assemble in that area going brap brap all winter long but even so I bet it thins out at night. 📞 I’ll have to call the DEC office in Sherburne and find out. Also if the snow isn’t deep I should be able to get there as the ground is really solid there due to the reinforcement for the horse trailers and hooves during the summer 🐴.

I don’t know but I was just taken in by the beauty of Southern Madison County and Northern Otsego County. 🐮 Yeah things did kind of smell earthy and like cow poop 💩 but that’s country living. The browns and the grays were pretty, they stirred something in my soul. I think it’s so fortunate to those who are able to chip a life out of the rural country, if by agriculture and one of many other jobs, some small, some decent paying but all tough with limited opportunity compared to the big cities.

Between the forested, snow covered hills full of wildlife and the rich farmlands below its such beautiful country. β›² So many quaint old farm houses and run down trailers, homesteaders with a family pig 🐽 or cow to muddy farms with old fashioned tie stall barns 🐮, milking twice a day with surge milkers and fifty year old open cab tractors with box spreaders. Weeds growing up around broken and forgotten farm equipment, piles of manure rotting away to be spread someday in the future. Trees to be split and someday warm the farm house. Four wheelers for fun and getting around the farm, a goat 🐐 tied to a tree, piles of junk to be scrapped some day or burnt to a crisp in a bonfire. 🔥 Rural scenes like this exist across the nation but I live in the city and make my money 💵 doing the urban thing now saving for a better tomorrow when I can own land in a freer state and have an off grid property, hopefully in an area as beautiful and wonderful as Southern Madison County.

I’d someday love 😍 to live in a place like that but not in an oppressively liberal state like New York which doesn’t really understand rural communities. After all two out of three New Yorkers live in the metropolitan region 🚇 – that is Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, New York City and Long Island. Might soon be 70 percent of New Yorkers. Pennsylvania is nice but it kind of suffers from the same problem – and its also an incredibly expensive state to live in especially with the recent gas tax hikes β›½. City life may be getting better, as may regulations for fair commerce with business but its also an incredibly hard to make it in the small towns. I don’t think Trump is the answer but neither is his counterpart closer to home who exists 180 degrees out of phase but in many ways is similar.

2020 is going to be a big year for all of us 🎇 but my hope is it will be another step forward towards a better life. I’ll work hard and try to advance my career and help my company grow and move forward. What’s good for them is ultimately good for myself. 💼 I know working in the windowless basement office 🏢, paying my dues, someday will pay off with more career advancement, more money to save 💵 towards that off grid property out in the country.

Climate change will probably really kick in during the next decade, and it’s going to be a wild ride for mankind. I don’t think whatever comes out of the next election in the coming year will change that but it will bite us in the next decade and prove that we are doing much too little too late. 🌎 People use per capita stats to blame the guy with the rusty pickup and burping cows in the tie stall barn in Madison County but if you don’t look at the big cities for the root of the problem your just playing games with statistics. 🔢But my focus is enjoying life and saving for a better future and not saving the world.

Some Snow on the Trees

December 28, 2019 Afternoon

Good evening! Mostly clear and 33 degrees at Moscow Hill Camping Area in Brookfield. Calm wind as we are tucked down in the valley. Smoke is going straight up from the fire. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 7 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

Beautiful evening, mild for late December but the ground is still fairly frozen. β›Ί That said I’m sure these campsites have a thick pack of gravel because they’re trampled by horses 🐴 and heavy horse trailers and diesel pickup trucks all summer long. These sites have those nice little pavilions that the DEC has at a number of state forests in Central and Western New York. 🏡 They’re perfect for handing up lights and cooking and preparing food under. 🍲 I wish they had them up at Cherry Ridge 🍒 but only at the horse camp 🐴.

I was originally planning on going up to Cherry Ridge 🍒 but the road was icy as it’s plowed but not sanded or salted beyond the seasonal use only. I probably would have been fine going up it but there is that one steep section towards the top so I decided against it in favor of Moscow Hill horse camp. 🐴 The riding season is done for the year and while it’s right off of the county highway, there is very little traffic nearby, certainly far less than NY 8. I think I made a good choice camping here and I forgot how nice the pavilions are. Plus being only fifteen minutes away from Shurburne it made for a nice drive down there to visit the Rogers Environmental Education Center. 🐸 No cellphone here but I kind of enjoy the solitude. 📱

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 26 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Light and variable wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

Madison County certainly is a brown and gray as I noted earlier. But that’s winter and that how the land is. So many neat old farm houses and real rough cut farms that are super muddy after it being relatively mild. 🐮 Lots of run down trailers, modular homes and even a few shed to homes. Not too many off grinders although I bet in the future – especially with new homes you’ll see more of that, especially on dirt roads without electric lines. 🔌

While I didn’t grow up in a trailer or a farm 🚜 I’ve always loved the gritty rural life. 😍 The piles of junk and manure. 🔧 The goats 🐐 tied to the tree, the homesteaders processing their own deer and hogs 🐖. They call it poverty or ignorant rednecks but those people are a lot smarter and privledged than I. Someday I’ll own an off grid cabin 🏡 and do a little homesteading myself but I’ll never be a true country boy  like those who were raised the life in a place like Southern Madison County. Sure, a lot of my neighbors growing up raised pigs and cows, llved in trailers or modular homes and even burned their own trash 🔥 but I grew up in an ordinary house in the country to college educated 🎓 parents. They had goats and chickens 🐔 buy were no means real country boys.

Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1915.❄

Tomorrow morning I’m taking down camp β›Ί and heading to Glimmerglass State Park before the rain β˜”. As it is a fairly mild night, 🌃 I decided to not bother with the tent – I’ll be plenty warm once I get snuggled under the covers in my truck bed. I do like the warmth of the hot tent but it is a lot more work to set up and take down. If I were staying multiple nights or if it was colder I’d definitely had considered the tent.

Tomorrow should be a really nice day but not sure about the rest of the week. β›Ί As I noted I’m pulling the plug on going to the Finger Lakes through New Years Day but I’m thinking about going to the Adirondacks tomorrow. Or maybe Madison County? I got thinking I’d like to see a more rural landscape for a change. NY 8 is always so noisy to camp along and I might be camping in snow, pretty sure I will be up north. Snow can be bad if there is a big snow bank and nowhere to park up north. But I’m a bit concerned about snow and ice up on Brown Road in Brookfield.

At any rate, I’ve packed gear for one night 🌃 and I have enough food and supplies for one night camping trip without going to the store. Multiple nights would require buying more food and packing more clothes. I’ll study for the webcams in the morning. And the radar and satellite images.

I mean I really want to get away but not if it means I’ll get soaked, muddy or chilled through. Sure I can read books at home 📖, cook on the regular stove a fancy meal and even turn up the electric heat if I want but I’d rather be up in the wilderness where I can have a fire and listen to music and nature with my headphones off. 🎧 Working in the basement office with no windows kind of has me bummed out and with the early snow storm and getting Lyme disease I didn’t get out as much as I wanted this autumn. 🔥

December 26, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. β˜ƒοΈ Not a terrible evening for the day after Christmas.

I was over at John Wolcott house after work for a while 🔎 looking at old historical documents 📄 as I often do on Thursday nights 🌃. It wasn’t a bad evening, some of the articles about the Knickerbocker Arena were fascinating. So much corruption in Albany during the final years of the Corning administration into the Whalen era. And it was County Executive Jim Coyne who ultimately was the fall guy but he certainly wasn’t the only crook in Albany. 🏫

Getting ready for the camping trip tomorrow β›Ί although first I’m getting to bed early. 😴 Might as well get to bed early if I keep waking up so early. I’m hopeful that camping will improve my sleep. The nights are certainly dark and long this time of year in the woods – nearly fifteen hours darkness each night. I’ll probably retire to bed by eight or nine most nights at camp but I might read or listen to podcasts for a while. 🔊 Certainly the tent will be the warmest location, especially with the heater on that expected damp and rainy Sunday night. I’m just glad to be away from Albany for sure. I really miss the rural landscape. Sure, it’s not West Virginia but it’s still a big change from Albany or the parts of the Adirondacks I visit regularly.
