The Race for (Automobile) Space

Today’s essay is from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in December 1969, penned by Mayor Erastus Corning in 1969. I share this simply for the convenience of reading it online, I can claim no copyright except to point out it should be in the public domain due to being a speech given by a public figure to a public body.

When city officials meet with highway engineers, there is a familiar theme. Where is the automobile leading us? Here is the way one official of a metropolitan center looks at the problem of autos and more autos. Mr. Corning is the mayor of Albany, New York. His comments are adapted from an address to New York Highway Department engineers, April 17, 1969.

For something over half a century, few people gave even the slight thought to the question: Is the automobile here to stay? In the sixties, however there have more and more haunting doubts–more and more question raises. Have we the necessary space for all the automobiles we are buying, using and discarding so freely? Have we the space for the great scotch-tape kind of ribbons of concrete and blacktop that we are pasting on the land? Have we the space to congest and clog up our city streets so that they can neither be cleaned properly in the summer nor have the snow removed in the winter? Have we the space for monumental parking garages and vast parking lots of in prime areas in our cities?

While I have used the word “space” and not spoken of the cost or economics, the relationship between space and economics and becomes and more intimate each year that our earth becomes more and more crowded. When one can reflect that total number of people on the earth today is greater than the number of all members of human race that have walked the earth before us since the dawn of history, we can see dramatically that we are getting pretty crowded.

Parking

Speaking of being crowded โ€” brings to mind a number of pretty dramatic statistics. The vastness of the oceans of the world is no longer limitless. Pesticides, hydrocarbons, lead, to mention but a few, are becoming cause for serious alarm as to the universal polluting affect they are already having on our oceans. On a more local scale two-thirds of downtown Los Angeles is devoted to either โ€” highways, arterials, or parking lots. One-half of all the air pollution that exists in the entire world comes from automobiles, carbon monoxide amounting in just the United States alone to some 230,000 tons each and every day.

It sad thing to have to take comfort from the fact while the amount of carbon dioxide that is going into the atmosphere increases the tendency of the atmosphere to act as an a greenhouse trapping the heat of the sunlight and raising the world’s temperature, this balanced by other forms of air pollution that come between us and the sun, cutting down on the amount of actual solar heat that reaches the earth and reducing the temperature to back where it was.

While the medical advances in the last quarter of a century are greater than all such advances that have occurred throughout human history, a less pleasant fact is that in the last 30 years we have used up more minerals and fuels than in all of history, and that use will double again in the next 25 years. It is another sad fact that in half a century we will have increased our per capita use of water in this country twenty-five fold.

In addition to the population explosion, everything else is exploding too. Our use of water, minerals, and fuels has increased even more than our population. Our manufacture of automobiles, packaging materials, bottles, tin cans โ€” these too have increased by geometric proportions.

We are getting crowded; air and water and land becoming more and more at a premium.

You may very well wonder what in the world all this has to do with highways and highway engineering. The plain fact is that we are in a competitive race for space and land and haven’t come even remotely close to realizing it as yet. The hue and cry that we hear on all sides on the disposal of solid wastes is an indication of the start of that realization. The almost complete about-face on the question of thermal pollution resulting from the operation of atomic power plants is but a few months old. The popular appeal of bond issues and vast spending program to combat air and water pollution is a further step along the road realization of the conditions around us.

The day of laying out the basis of pure engineering and plain economics is gone. Today your problems are infinitely more complex than they were ten years ago. I do not know much of what is in store for us in the future, but I do know this for certain. If our population continues to climb at its present rate we are not going to have room for both people and automobiles as we know them today. Looking at the State Campus office complex in Albany, one is overwhelmed by the vast sea of automobiles covering a far greater area then all the office buildings. When you come from the Thruway and the Northway to go to this same State office complex, the amount of land covered and surrounded by curliques and cloverleafs seems greater again than all the campus office buildings. There just isn’t going to be enough space for this kind of a thing to continue. The competition is going to be too great, and the automobile, I hope and believe, is going to lose the fight to just plain people.

What can be done about? What can you who are so closely associated with the automobile and where it goes and where it sits quietly most of the time, what can you do? I don’t know but I do have a few suggestions.

The amount of space that automobiles take up just waiting to be used is tremendously wasteful. In our cities, waiting automobiles make it impossible to clean our streets of dirt in the summer and snow and ice in the winter. Perhaps private ownerships of automobiles will become a thing of the past in our cities. We may end up with a fleet of mini-autos, self-driven taxis, owned by the city, autos without keys that can be driven by anyone to anywhere he wants to go and then left for the next person who wants to go someplace else. This would eliminate much of the waste of autos just sitting in one at least 90 per cent of the time.

Certainly mass transportation is going to become more and more important. Our passenger carrying railroads to contrary notwithstanding, the possibilities of innovations and great break-thoughts in mass transportation are infinite and must be found, monorails, moving sidewalks, mini-buses, high speed trains. These are all with us now, but we cannot stop there. We must have a great variety of new ideas in the field of mass transportation. Our locations for bus stations, and what services are provided in these bus stations must be new, must be treated both with imagination and that we have a long, long, way to go in this field.

Multiple uses of our highway properties, particularly in and around our cities are already with us, but here again it must be expanded. Every highway planned from now on must be designed with multiple uses in mind. The use of air rights will become more and commonplace, and highways will have all the features built into them at the outset that will make it easy to use the air rights. Every cloverleaf eventually will be designed so that its interior land can be used for surface parking and, to go one step further, will be designed for two- and three-deck parking garages either over or under, and perhaps both.

Chemical engineering is going to be more and more important. The air over our highways our highways can no longer continue to be filled to suffocation with the wastes from our automobiles.

Note: The rest of the speech was not printed in the article.

Erastus Corning's classic 1969 essay from the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists on the many problems urban communities face across the nation. This essay may be a half century old, but few things have changed in the past 50 years.

September 30, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Where did September go? Winters coming. But first autumn. Two weeks to Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind.

I had a nice breakfast of eggs this morning,ย so hopefully I’ll have lots of energy to make it through today. โ˜• I set my alarm early so I would be up in plenty of time to drop off my truck and be in early to prepare for the Monday meeting.โฐ Hopefully this week will go smoothly, and vacation will happen on Saturday morning bright and early. Rainy though by mid-week but maybe the rain will get out of the system by next week.๐ŸŒง

Big Red has been dropped off at the shop and he’s being looked at. ๐Ÿš˜ Hopefully today or tomorrow it will be fixed and I’ll be good for vacation. ๐Ÿ”ง New mechanic but the online reviews were good and the receptionist was friendly. Maybe not the tobacco smoke, WGNA country music playing ๐ŸŽถ with a burn barrel ๐Ÿ”ฅ out back but I don’t live in the country anymore. ๐Ÿฎ I do miss having my cars repaired at Lou’s in Greenville, but he must be a million years old now. Great guy though. But certainly driving through Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia I’ll have plenty of time to see the country in coming week.

I’ll probably buy food for vacation ๐Ÿฒ on Wednesday so I can test out the truck and have more time to figure out what I forgot before I leave. I want to leave by dawn on Saturday. Should be a nice trip down there. Friday I will also go to the laundromat and get some books to read at the library. I also want to buy two additional SD cards ๐ŸŽด so I have plenty of recording capacity for my dash cam to make scenic videos.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 29th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1905.

The sun will set at 6:39 pm with dusk around 7:07 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 55 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 5am. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1993.

A picture perfect weekend to start out my vacation on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 59. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Maximum dew point of 45 at 5pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 64 degrees. Temperatures are dropping rapidly now that we are into October.

I plan to get a really early start on Saturday and probably get scrapple in Pennsylvania just to try it out. ๐Ÿฝ Then visit a few state parks on the northern tier before overnighting near Towanda. I’ll probably take Interstate 88 down to Pennsylvania, even though I hate driving it as I want as much time as possible to visit state parks in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The latest forecast for Thomas WV is talking about more rain โ˜” for Monday and Tuesday but that could change again. I’m going to bring my tent, tarps and heater in case it’s really cold and wet. โ›บ I don’t mind a few quiet days but I hope at least the balance of week is sunny. Cloudy days as was common during my vacation in 2017 and 2018 are kind of depressing. โ˜ Sometimes though if you get the exposure right cloudy days can be excellent for fall foliage pictures. Might also be a good day for some camp cooking and baking, now that my camp stove is working really well.

I am glad that this week is a pay week, ๐Ÿค‘ because between the car insurance, the repair bill for my truck, rent, and certain expenses related to vacation, there is a lot of money going out and not a lot coming in. My day-to-day fund balance as of the weekend is the lowest it’s been in recent years, although I do keep a bit more in their in years past as a cushion. That said, based on the fact that it’s another month before my credit card bill is due, I think things will balance out, especially as expenses except for heat decline in the winter months.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:15 pm with dusk at 6:43 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1920.

 Scenic Otter Creek Road

August 10, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Clouds, a few sprinkles and a little sun and 60 degrees here on the Hunter Mountain overlook of the West Kill Valley. ๐ŸŒฆ There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. I’m waiting for it, hoping to get better pictures and videos. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

This afternoon will have a slight chance of showers. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 60 degrees at 2pm. 21 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 15th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 2pm. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

I decided today to hike up to Hunter Mountain along the West Kill trail. ๐Ÿšถ Later on I plan to see Pratts Rocks in Prattsville and then head up to Burnt Rossman. โ›บ Tomorrow I’ll do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ in Looking Glass Pond and hit up the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley and then swim ๐ŸŠ in Mine Kill State Park.

I fully admit if I was a responsible adult I would have gone to the Save the Pine Bush organizational meeting ๐ŸŒฒand stayed in town to save gas on my limited budget. But summer is rapidly fading away and I wanted to get out of town before its done and I’m sure rainy weekends aren’t that far off. โ˜” I don’t feel that guilty though, I’ve spent more time on that map and researching things over the past few weeks than anything else I’ve been doing.

The sun will set at 8:04 pm with dusk around 8:35 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 47 degrees at 4am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 26th. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Driving through Greenville and stopping at the grocery store ๐Ÿฌ I had forgotten what a hick town I grew up in. Fun place although I don’t know if I’d ever want to go back now with all the gun restrictions ๐Ÿ”ซ and regulations today on open burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ – and I was surprised how expensive things were at the store. But then again in Albany I mostly shop for things on sale at Walmart. I do like the small towns and spend most of my vacation time there but its still cultural shock to go back to the community I haven’t been in regularly for going on two decades now. I’ve worked in other hick towns but the hometown is strange. The girls at the grocery store with their Irish red hair are very cute. ๐Ÿ˜ But as I like to say, their husbands own more guns than me. Fit in well with my big jacked up truck ๐Ÿšš though. That said, I can’t see moving back to the country until I can live in a place where I can have fires and burn whatever I want on my own land. ๐Ÿšœ More on that later.

I forgot how popular the Catskills are these days ๐Ÿ—ป but they sure are beautiful. I should do some more Catskill peaks this fall, maybe truck cap camping in Schoharie or just do day trips. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures but mostly on my 35mm camera ๐Ÿ“ท so it will have to wait for posting until Sunday or Monday. I’m also making a ton of videos. Fortunately, despite hitting a lot of traffic around the fire tower ๐Ÿ—ผ the ledge I’m on is relatively quiet and has nice views when you peer over the tree line. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒSun is coming out โ˜€ and I’m lazy so I’m procrastinating a bit but I should hurry up so I also have time to see Pratts Rocks.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:43 pm with dusk at 8:12 pm. On that day in 2018, we had sunny and temperatures between 85 and 57 degrees. ๐ŸŒป We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires

July 26, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 66 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. It’s a bit sticky earlier this evening but certainly not oppressive. Now comfortable.

It’s been quite a day but I survived unharmed and saw some beautiful country. I like taking the blue highways but twice this day I got cut off and had to slam on the brakes.๐Ÿ’ฅI also almost got hit in the parking lot at Quaker Lake but fortunately not. I was parked at the time with my engine off so it wouldn’t have been my fault but it could have required a police report ๐Ÿ‘ฎ and body work had it happened. Stupid other kid backing out. I was reminded by Waze that Sugar Run Road was closed so I ended up dwtouring by taking a scenic drive through Allegany State Park – I was going to say I’ve never been through it in the summer – but that’s not true I drove that way in 2017 due to another Penna DOT detour on US 6 and making a wrong turn. But that’s fine I wanted to buy some food for dinner – Then I got lost in Bradford Penna – first looking for a grocery store and then later looking for the road back to the Kinzua Overlook – PA 59. Oh, and I had to back track a bit on Cuba, NY when I realized the old road that I was using to Shunpiking the Southern Tier Expressway was a dead end.

It was a good day though, first starting out at Klipnocky Road in Gas Springs State Forest then taking down the hammock and alternating between the Southern Tier Expressway and other routes that I could find for Shunpiking. ๐Ÿš™ It’s so easy to wile away the hours in the hammock. But I have to admit having phone access most of my trip I’ve not necessarily used my time for productive uses, e.g. reading ๐Ÿ“–. It’s so easy to scroll through Facebook and look at stupid memes. Some neat little historic towns I passed through. I snapped a few quick pictures on the dash cam but I admit I probably should have stopped a bit more and took in the streetscape ๐Ÿ“น before it’s gone or visited more of the local businesses like the Cuba Cheese Store. ๐Ÿ•

I was running a little bit early so I drove up to Little Rock City. ๐Ÿ“ท Not much has changed since I was there in 2013 during my autumn trip out there. ๐ŸThe past two off year trips I’ve shunned Western NY for West Virginia.

I also drove down to Allegany State Park to swim, ๐ŸŠ and the new bath house ๐Ÿ›€ was a dank and smelly as it was last time. The ventilation and drainage of the new bath house had never been right and I miss the vines and natural woods of the old one – the new one looks like standard suburban McMansion crap and the bathrooms while new are gross. The water was cold and not as clear in Quaker Lake as I remembered but that’s probably comparing it to Lake Erie whose water is particularly bad this year with severe blue green algea. ๐Ÿธ But the country driving out there was so beautiful.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 31st. That said, I expect it’s always a bit cooler here up in the Allegheny Mountains. Maximum dew point of 60 at 9pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1977.

I’m fairly happy with the campsite I have here at the Allegheny National Forest. The Allegheny woods with the mountain laurel and broad canopy above is so much different than the Adirondacks. It’s really unfortunate it’s such a long trip from Albany ๐Ÿ—ป because it’s such beautiful country. I guess for folks who live in Buffalo, it’s just a weekend trip and hardly special but I guess the same can be said about me and the Adirondacks, especially Piseco Powley Road.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ˜ with 20% illuminated. The moon will rise at 1:28 am. I’m not staying up for it tomorrow. The New Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of t-storms. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 6:03 am with the first light at 5:31 am, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 55 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 10th. So be it, August is just around the corner. Maximum dew point of 60 at 5pm. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1955.

Tomorrow I’m heading back east to outside of Wellsboro where I have a camping permit for the night. โ›บ I want to stop at a few places on the way east, then explore the Pine Creek Gorge. ๐Ÿšถ I’m considering visiting the lumber museum, ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ which is right on the way back and may also check out the completed block glass plaza in the little town whose name escapes me but used to a manufacturing hub for most of glass blocks used in buildings across the country. Maybe Port Allegheny? I’m glad at any rate I’ll be able to break up the long drive home into multiple days as I like to poke around on the back roads and not go too far in any one day๐Ÿš™ . At any rate, tomorrow is the last full day of vacation, Sunday by mid morning the focus will be on heading east on Route 6 then making a bee line for Albany on Interstate 88, so I can get home and unpacked and ready for a certain busy week at work. But I’m fine, it’s been a long time away from home and I’m starting grow tired of the travel.

In four weeks on August 23 the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 40 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is a month away, Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 5 weeks and Friday the 13th ๐Ÿ‘ฟ is in 7 weeks.

Vanderwhacker Wild Forest

June 11, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Green Light Tuesday. ๐Ÿšฆ Hopefully the traffic is moving well for you this morning. Looking out while I was making breakfast ๐Ÿณ it looked like not a lot of people were getting a green light on Elm Avenue. I made eggs with hot dogs, broccoli and cheese for breakfast. Two weeks to Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. I really should continue to research the candidates so I know which levers to pull down at the library, my new polling place. I guess the all day primaries don’t start until next year? Or so I was reading on that paper trash I got from a candidate in the mail a few weeks ago. I don’t know, I’m just an ignorant hick when it comes to such topics.

The rain has stopped but it’s still cloudy and 61 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 56 degrees. Things will improve throughout the day, there already is some hints of blue to west. The skies will clear around 11 am. Should be nice later on for the picnic.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 9am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 74 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. Breezy, with a northwest wind 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1947.

The sun will set at 8:33 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 50 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 26th. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light west after midnight. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1972.

On this day in 1963, Buddhist monk Thรญch Quแบฃng ฤแปฉc burns himself with gasoline ๐Ÿ”ฅ in a busy Saigon intersection to protest the lack of religious freedom in South Vietnam. ๐ŸŒ The self-immolation would be captured on film and would go around the world. On the same day, John F. Kennedy addresses Americans from the Oval Office proposing a Civil Rights Act that propsed equal access to public facilities, end segregation in education and guarantee federal protection for voting rights. Lyndon Johnson would git r dun a year later.

While this is an important day in history, ๐Ÿ˜Ž I’m just counting down the days until summer. Nine days. I doubt I’ll get out of town this weekend due to weather and work, but God willing next week. If it’s nice and hot, Potholers and Lily Lake from Stewart Landing otherwise Schoharie County and Mine Kill pool. ๐ŸŠ Summer is on my mind, and hopefully we will at least be seeing some sun soon. ๐ŸŒป

It seems like the sink is working fine in the bathroom. ๐Ÿ›€ Drain cleaner got it working well. I will make sure to run the water a little extra when I’m shaving to make sure I”m not clogging things up with shaving — and make sure to use cleaner when things start slowing up right away. It’s kind of my fault for not addressing the problem right away, but things are good now.

The USB battery bank I got is fully charged, although it took all night ๐Ÿ”‹ and pushed my USB charger hard — at times it showed it was drawing upwards of 2 amp. Hopefully this means it will have lots of capacity. Except in really hot or cold weather, I’ll probably leave it in my truck, hooked up to the charger at all times, so it’s ready for camping. When it’s fully charged, it doesn’t draw much power at all.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny skies with a few rain showers in the afternoon and temperatures between 78 and 55 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1898.

Picnic Table and Flag

May 24, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ! Three weeks to Flag Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. Partly cloudy and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Breezy, ๏ธ18 mph breeze from the northwest ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 29 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. The dew point is 51 degrees. The skies will clear around 1 pm. Not a real nice morning weather wise, but it’s expected to get better as the day progresses.

The plan is after work today to head up to the Green Mountains. โ›ฐ I expect a fairly quiet day today, so hopefully I’ll either be able to leave early or right about the normal time. ๐Ÿ• I do need to stop and get milk ๐Ÿ„ as I drank the last milk for breakfast with my cereal, but things went well packing this morning, and I don’t think I’ll need much more in supplies. I checked the oil and windshield washer fluid, only the later needed a little bit of topping off. The coolant reservoir has been slightly below the cold line for a while — I’ve not added any in the past 80,000 miles — and while I have a bottle at home, I probably should pick up some fresh in the future. I gassed up the truck this morning.โ›ฝ

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 69 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 15th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 10am. Northwest wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1964.

The sun will set at 8:19 pm with dusk around 8:53 pm, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 63 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light west after midnight. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1956.

I decided to move forward on adding the extra accessory battery to my truck, ordering some more wire, lugs, and fuse holder.๐Ÿ”‹ I wasn’t sure if I needed all that hardware, but I figured it wasn’t that expensive and there are always future projects I could use it on. I am going to get the battery case and battery at Walmart next week, and should have it working by the weekend. This will double my accessory battery reserve, and hopefully get me to the point where I have ample power for camping.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Flag Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:09 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 73 and 60 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1892.

Down Towards the Green East Branch of Sacanadaga River

May 16, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ! Now if the sun were ever to come out — as it did for a few hours yesterday, and is trying to today — the we’d have a shit-ton of green grass.ย  ๐ŸŒพFive weeks to Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ. Looking forward to finally having some nice weather, laying down at the beach, going for a swim, or fishing in the evening. Partly cloudy and 51 degrees โ›… at the Elm Avenue Park and Ride, waiting for 8:26 and heading downtown. There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 46 degrees. It’s actually a pretty nice morning for once.

Decided to make up blueberry pancakes for breakfast ๐Ÿ’and pasta for lunch. ๐Ÿฒ Definitely a pleasant spring morning for a change, I enjoyed my walk down to the Park and Ride. Taking one of the now old CDTA hybrid buses ๐Ÿš to work, the hybrid motor is making some odd noises for sure. The turbo is whistling too. I wonder if it’s blowing black smoke ๐Ÿ’จ out its tailpipe as we go downtown. Smells like cleaner as they can’t open the windows on these older buses.ย Nothing gets older faster then the future. Listening to Me and Bobby McGee as I look at the increasingly green landscape around.๐ŸŽถ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 9th. Maximum dew point of 46 at 8am. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Definite improvement. That there, is more to go before summer is here. But I’m okay without the real hot weather for a while, especially before the pools open and the black fliesย  ๐Ÿœare out. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

The sun will set at 8:12 pm with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 60 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and one second over yesterday.

I’d love to get down to the park tonight, but I really have to work on the Pine Bush booth. ๐ŸŽจ I probably will end up walking down to the library to select and order the photos for updating the booth, ๐Ÿ–ผ and then tomorrow pick them up with some crayons.๐Ÿ– I am hoping I can do all of the ordering of printed material online. Lynne normally uses Kinkos on Wolf Road but I’d rather do it at Staples if possible to avoid the trip up there. I just got figure out how to order online.๐Ÿ–จ

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 18th. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 59 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959. Farmers are planting some crops ๐ŸŒพ now as the risk of freezing is rarer, at least when it’s not raining.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. Gas Up day, putt, putt, bang! ๐Ÿšœ I haven’t totally decided if I will go to it this year, but I might go and then camp up on Cotton Hill, maybe back-country hammock camp or up in the lean-to. It could be a fun weekend.โ›บ I haven’t been out to Schoharie County since last September and some time out there might be fun.
