Good evening! Clear and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Cool but pretty clear on this late September night ๐ŸŒƒ. Went for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ but I decided to lay inside on the bed, ๐Ÿ› because it wasn’t warm enough to sit out back. Wouldn’t be bad with a sweater, next to the fire though.

After coming home from Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area I ended up deciding on going out to Bennett Hill โ›ฐ๏ธ for a hike in Clarksville. Always kind of a fun hike but lately it’s been so crowded there since the growing popularity of all outdoors activities since the pandemic started. ๐Ÿฎ Always fun seeing the cows there and the views – especially of Wolf Hill ๐Ÿบ are always nice. I’ll leave Partridge Run for a nice autumn day for hiking with lots of blaze orange and a gun in sling.

Went out to my parents house ๐Ÿก and we had Stuffed Peppers ๐Ÿฒ which is always really good when the peppers are fresh. ๐Ÿซ‘ It was good seeing them and I did my wash out there so I don’t have to do it this week at the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘š

Tonight will have patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 33 degrees at 5am. 17 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. Calm wind. Tomorrow will have areas of frost before 8am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 10th. Light north wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1895.

Continuing to upload pictures ๐Ÿ–ผ to the blog, but I had to stop mid-day as I discovered a problem with the photo uploader, which ran out of ID allocations and then permissions — a code issue that I have finally fixed. ๐Ÿ’ป That said, I thought I had fixed that issue months ago but that wasn’t the case. ๐Ÿ˜•Also have some new content for this week that I will be posting as the week progresses.

Still haven’t put the new battery ๐Ÿ”‹ in the laptop, but hopefully I’ll have some downtime this week but I have busy week on tap.

I finally checked the oil in the truck, and it wasn’t too bad.๐Ÿซ– Added a quarter of a quart of oil, but it was well within the normal range, but this should keep it good for a few weeks. I realized I hadn’t checked it since the last oil change in July, before vacation.

I am watching the forecast but I’m thinking of heading up to the Adirondacks this weekend, if the forecast remains true. But I am sure by the weekend, things will change and it will be pouring rain for most of the week.

September 17, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ! I like constitution but it’s only as good as the people who are enforcing it. Two weeks to October ๐ŸŽƒ and Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ•. Shine on Harvest Moon in a few weeks. Late this year, in October or is the Hunter’s Moon? ๐Ÿน๐ŸฆŒ Partly sunny with haze and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒค๏ธ There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 50 degrees.

I went for my morning walk, ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป and it was a nice morning but the sky still has that gray-blue dull color from the western wildfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I ended up just walking around the Swift Preserve ๐Ÿธ, it was a nice morning but I got a late start because I had trouble getting out of bed ๐Ÿ›.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 57 at 1pm. A year ago, we had sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1942.

I have a meeting downtown today mid day ๐Ÿ•› and I’m still chewing over whether I should drive there or take a bus ๐ŸšŒ. I haven’t ridden the bus much in six months but it’s so convenient. ๐Ÿ™„But then again there is old Corona hiding out everywhere or so the politicians want us to believe. ๐Ÿ‘พ Duck ๐Ÿฆ† that, I’ll wear a mask ๐Ÿ˜ท. Or at a banada as I don’t own a real mask.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:51 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-21.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:25 pm with the sun in the west (267ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (274ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:03 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:29 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (274ยฐ) at an altitude of 1ยฐ from the horizon, 227,241 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:04 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 62 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

This afternoon I’m heading over John Wolcott house ๐Ÿ”Ž for a while to see what random files ๐Ÿ“‚ we can find although after the Fort Orange box ๐Ÿ—ƒ there hasn’t been a lot interesting things the past few weeks. But you never know what you will find.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 26th. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1986.

Yesterday I went down to the park and the Wi-Fi was down ๐Ÿ’ป which was obnoxious for the Zoom Meeting. I ended up going to the library parking lot and working there in the evening and updating the blog. ๐Ÿ“ I then came home and listened to the Save the Pine Bush Virtual Dinner honoring the late Reszin Adam’s over the conference call on my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑwhile I had Macoroni and Cheese with the fixings ๐Ÿง€ but it wasn’t as good as Reszin’s lasagna.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 11 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, patchy frost before 7am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 60. North wind 5 to 9 mph. Sunday, patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 61. Maximum dew point of 35 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees.

Definitely going to feel like an autumn weekend. ๐Ÿ‚ Saturday I’m going hiking in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and probably somewhere local on Sunday. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป Next weekend I’m hoping to get up north if the weather is nice.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until October ๐ŸŽƒ and Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 6:36 pm with dusk at 7:04 pm. This morning I was running low on milk ๐Ÿฅ› but I made due with what I had with some cold coffee โ˜• from yesterday. I like cold coffee, it’s nice and strong ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป. Morning ain’t morning without milk. ๐Ÿฎ

Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿปand it’s kind of odd with the haze with the haze from the wildfires out west. ๐Ÿ”ฅ It’s sunny but the skies are quite gray. Not the deep blue you would think of during late September on a low humidity day. Smell some wood smoke but I think it’s just from someone with a wood stove.

For some reason one of these my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ was irritated and I lost one of my contacts out walking but I’ll put in a fresh one when I get home ๐Ÿก. Not a big deal but it limits my vision while walking.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž with haze ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 15th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 5pm. I was looking at that picture ๐Ÿ–ผ I posted of Dick Patrick from 1975, and I am thinking the long side burns need to return ๐Ÿ’ˆ now that autumn is returning. So I’m to grow them back but maybe not as wild as Mr. Patrick. When I had sideburns in the spring, it was a lot less shaving.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 4am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 2am. Going to be a nice weekend. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Cool but sunny. I’m hoping to get up to the Adirondacks next weekend but this weekend I have a meeting in town ๐ŸŒผso I’ll try to go hiking locally. I’m hoping next weekend though the leaves will be really good in the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ‚

September 15, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ† There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 44 degrees.

Nice night for sitting out back. ๐ŸŒŒ Sure gets dark early this time of year and with the public library closed due to the pandemic I’ve not been spending my evenings down there with my laptop ๐Ÿ’ปand I’ve been going out earlier in the evening for my walk. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป That’s good as it means earlier to bed.

All day the skies were hazy from the western wildfires. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Just kind of a dull gray, like maybe on a hazy summer day or modestly cloudy day but not really dark. A sign of the times, although not that uncommon in recent years. At least we’ve been spared hurricanes ๐ŸŒ€ so far for the year in Upstate NY.

Scenic Creek

September 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Next Tuesday is Autumn ๐Ÿ‚. Clear and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ„There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

A cold start to the morning. ๐ŸŒ… First really chilly morning of the year but then again next week starts calendar autumn. ๐Ÿ‚ Definitely should be good for the colors up north – if I head north next weekend might be close to peak color in the Adirondacks. Then everything gets brown and gray. Snuggled under the covers in bed ๐Ÿ›, just got up to start the coffee โ˜•.

Hazy this morning from the left coast wild fires ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I still think New York should sue the left coast for air pollution from the wild fires, although at least it’s fairly high in the atmosphere so it’s not breathed much locally. It seems like air pollution from wildfires seems to be dimming the sky a lot more in autumn locally. Crystal clear blue skies of September are increasingly rare. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป Still a nice day for the morning walk though.

 NY City

Good evening! Mostly clear and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. Warm enough evening, I decided to fire up the fan. โš›

Not a half bad Tuesday with lots of meetings and fun stuff to do. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ Hiked in the Pine Bush for a couple of hours including after dark and went to a socially distant outdoors meeting.

Been a little achy this evening. ๐Ÿ˜ง Not sure what the issue is but its not that bad. Feels a little like chronic Lyme a bit but maybe I’m just cranky that I’m back home. But I had that Pine Bush meeting to attend so that was good.

Turbines on the Ridge

September 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 55 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. ๐ŸŒŒ There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. While not super cool tonight it was cool enough I got my hoodie, vest and cowboy ๐Ÿค  hat and sat by the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ for a while.

Summer is basically done at this point. ๐Ÿ‚ Already the evenings are cool and the sun is setting early with mid day sun almost twenty degrees lower in the sky. I noticed that there are hints of autumn colors in the trees after the cool nights lately. Labor Day, ten weeks after the summer solstice means it’s done. I bet in two or three weeks it will be peak color at Moose River Plains.

It was a nice day, with a delightful afternoon walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป along the Deerfield River. Not a lot of exciting birds ๐Ÿฆ but a few small song birds. The nice thing about a road hike is that it was free or crowds and offered several chances to bushwhack to infrequently places along the river.

I’m glad I finally cleaned out the bed ๐Ÿ› of my truck. It was getting kind of dirty and disorganized. While there isn’t much evidence of a mouse nest or mouse damage ๐Ÿit was good to do an inspection and wash down the area where the synthetic PMD spilled. I’m hoping not to find any mice in my truck cap tonight and that I sleep soundly.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 54 degrees at 11pm. It will start warming up as Labor Day progresses. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 9th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 2am. South wind 5 to 14 mph. Labor Day will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 21st. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. Breezy, with a south wind 16 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1945.

Actually going to be fairly cool tomorrow. ๐Ÿ‚ I am going to take down camp โ›บ and head home in the afternoon although it’s not a rush. I haven’t decided if I’m going to visit the folks on Sunday although I don’t have a lot planned for tomorrow.

I saw a nice bike ๐Ÿšฒ for sale on Facebook for $40 and I probably should have snapped it up but I’m sure it’s gone. Used bicycles are remarkably cheap – they have little residual value. I don’t know maybe I should contact the seller but it was a nice simple vintage three speed urban commuter bike with a rack on the back. But I’m still researching and learning. โš™ Perfect for getting around the city quickly with minimal fuss or adjustment. Still not sure if I’m going to go carless next autumn or just look at getting something simpler and smaller.

I bought a Black Lives Matters flag โœŠ๐Ÿฟto add to my collection. I figured it would be timely to add a new flag, been a few years now and it’s good to support a that community in their fight for justice. โš–
