May 20, 2020 Night

Good evening! Clear and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ๐ŸŒƒ Beautiful evening for sure but it’s time for me to head in and retire to bed. I’m sleepy ๐Ÿ˜ด as I took a sleeping pill ๐Ÿ’Š and the last of the doxycycline.

Nice evening after a beautiful day, โ˜€ got a little sunburnt on my left arm ๐Ÿ™‹ working out of my truck most of the day. I did both a morning and evening walk for a total of 5 plus miles today. I participated in the virtual Save the Pine Bush Dinner which lacked lasagna but had a good dinner speaker ๐Ÿฒ over the Zoom and the phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ in my case. Worked on some stuff for Save the Pine Bush.

Didn’t get out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center today but I did some backyard bird watching ๐Ÿฆ along with spotting some deer, rabbit ๐Ÿฐ and squirrel. A great beautiful male cardinal too. So much nature right in the backyard.

The day was kind of messed up in my head for work ๐Ÿ’ผ as they changed the times for meetings and I was groggy from the sleeping pill ๐Ÿ’Š I took the previous night ๐ŸŒƒ. I drove down to the library with my tailgate down but fortunately nothing fell out despite having the camping gear loaded in back. Fuse box and bus bar are working good as is the solar in my truck.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 27th. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1949.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 2% illuminated. Going to be a very starry weekend. ๐ŸŒŸ Bugs might be bad though and I’ll be hiding out under the screen tent ๐ŸŽช. Coming tomorrow! The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 4:56 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:29 am in the east-northeast (61ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 17 seconds. Sunrise is 52 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:10 am with sun in the east-northeast (68ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 49 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 74 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 31st. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1941. There was a dusting of snow in 1895.โ„

I’m getting ready for bed as I’m tired ๐Ÿ˜ด and have stayed up too late lately and need to get up by five o’clock in the morning on Friday to get up to camp, get set up and start work at nine. Friday and Monday will be working vacation days. Plus if I don’t get there early enough there is no way I’m going to get the campsite I want. โ›บ

I’ve already gotten the stuff I need out of the attic and the started packing the truck. Water jugs have been filled. Coolers prepped and started packing clothes. Tomorrow I’ll go to the laundromat and work from there ๐Ÿ‘š while I clean my clothes then after work get beer ๐Ÿป and food for the weekend. Load the kayak up and pack everything but the coolers so I can hit the road no later than 6:20 Friday morning to leave plenty of time before I need to clock in ๐Ÿ•’ and work using my phone and work laptop.

I am going to bring the kayak ๐Ÿšฃ and do some paddling and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ over the weekend but because I’m working on both Friday and Monday – and fielding inevitable client calls ๐Ÿ“ž over the weekend this will be a somewhat downscaled trip. But still relaxing and it will beat being home. ๐Ÿก

In four weeks on June 17 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (304ยฐ) at 8:35 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 19 minutes and 35 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 57 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1994.

I am hopeful in the coming weeks that Piseco Road โ›บ will get finished rebuilding and reopened for access to the potholers and Powley Place. ๐ŸŠ Last autumn that got it partially repaired for the snow machines but apparently not fully rebuilt for car traffic. ๐Ÿ˜”

I am thinking Moose River Plains for the fourth of July again this year โ›บ but I’ll take a wait and see approach. Things should hopefully quiet down a bit by then at work. That said I might want to camp in a more remote part of the plains if it looks like the pandemic is still raging come July but I doubt with the heat and sun, it will be in a slumber until autumn.

Looking ahead, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is a month away, Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 5 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 8 months.

Springtime

May 19, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a east-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear around 2 am. Pleasant spring evening. Busy day but after work I got to walk at Five Rivers ๐Ÿšถ and then get to the store ๐Ÿฌ and get some essentials.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2002.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 6% illuminated. The Strawberry ๐Ÿ“ Moon is on Wednesday, June 3. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 4:57 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:30 am in the east-northeast (62ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 17 seconds. Sunrise is 53 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:11 am with sun in the east-northeast (69ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 4pm. Typical but still real nice tomorrow. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1962.

In four weeks on June 16 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:35 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 13 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 68 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 57 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1967.

Bought socks and a bunch of other essentials I’d normally get a Walmart online ๐Ÿช because they have virtually nothing in stock. Shop rite was well stocked this time I was there but they don’t sell clothing. I have no plans to visit a physical Walmart anytime soon.

Renewed my fishing license ๐ŸŽฃso that will be good for camping this weekend. I think I’ll want to do some good fishing for sure. Assuming the black flies aren’t so bad that all I want to do is hide in the tent ๐ŸŽช which is arriving Thursday fingers crossed.

So it looks like I will be able to get out of town after all. โ›บ I figured out a plan that I think will work but I have to get packed and ready by Thursday evening as I have need to be to camp by 9am as I plan to work from there and I want to make sure I get the campsite with good solar energy and cell reception. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Camp three nights and then work from there on Memorial Day and drive home by dusk that evening. Bringing the kayak to paddle and maybe swim ๐ŸŠ on Saturday. I’m kind of excited about this and if it works out might be a model for future weekends. That said I’m kind of bummed out about Piseco Powley Road being closed due to the wash outs but hopefully it will be rebuilt this summer.

Looking ahead, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 24 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 24 weeks.

Still Early Spring Up Here in the Mountains

May 18, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 44 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Kind of a busy day with work and stuff for Save the Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณBut it made the Monday go by quickly. Got home fairly late due to the work meeting and then I went for my evening walk. ๐Ÿšถ

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 46 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 14th. North wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 12% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 4:58 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:31 am in the east-northeast (62ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is 56 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:12 am with sun in the east-northeast (69ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 14 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 54 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 9th. East wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1989. There was a dusting of snow in 1976.โ„

Tomorrow should be a nice day for working outside. โ˜€ If I have some free time I want to hook up that junction / fuse box I got for the truck that will hopefully reduce the loose connections causing a voltage drop at times when the laptop is plugged in. ๐Ÿ’ป Plenty of free solar power tomorrow.

It looks like I’ll have to work on Memorial Day which further reduces the likelihood of getting out of town this weekend. โ›บ But maybe next weekend. I could always work from camp if I go somewhere I have phone service like Duck Pond in Schoharie or Perkins Clearing. It’s good though that work has picked up a lot. I’m hoping I can roll over the time I would have had off for Memorial Day Weekend and extend it for Independence Day Weekend.

In four weeks on June 15 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:35 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 51 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 81 and 54 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 57 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1988.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 1 week, June ๐Ÿน is in 2 weeks and Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 5 weeks.

It looks hot next week. โ˜€ I’ll have to get out the fan and prepare to work down by the river maybe with a fishing pole in one hand. ๐ŸŽฃ I learned how to do the Zoom background thing, so now when I have a meeting with a client I can throw on a dress shirt and set the background and look like I’m in the office ๐Ÿข while I’m in shorts next to the river. Or the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ—ป Not sure if the potholers are an option for next weekend as it sounds like they are still rebuilding the road.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿฆ…Only 4 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Along the Creek

May 17, 2020 10 PM Update

Good evening! Cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a east breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear Tuesday around 1 am.

For all the commotion earlier it looks like the fire ๐Ÿš’ is out or whatever all the emergency vehicles were reporting too. Maybe I’m a bit paranoid about the plastics plant blowing up but I’m well aware of toxic chemicals they use at SABIC plastics and it sure seemed like a lot of emergency response heading that way. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Probably safer at home at any rate and who knows their is rain pushing this way shortly.

It’s not like I sat home and eat twinkies all day. ๐Ÿ› I did have a bowl of tuna fish salad for dinner but it probably has a quarter pound of peas and broccoli besides the noodles, mayonnaise and tuna fish. ๐Ÿ  I did hold back on the mayonnaise a bit.

Walking out to Five Rivers this afternoon was nice. ๐Ÿธ Spent several hours studying nature with the binoculars my parents lent me. It’s really fascinating to watch the birds up close and even just study squirrel and chipmunk behavior. Next up I need to get a better knowledge of bird ๐Ÿฆ species – I know the common ones but especially the migratory birds are a bit of a mystery to me. I thought about Black Creek Marsh at dusk but I decided to hold off because it was getting late – after seven o’clock when I started walking home from Five Rivers.

To be honest, my plan for visiting Black Creek Marsh at dusk ๐ŸŒ† wasn’t just for bird watching ๐Ÿฆ or photos ๐Ÿ“ท but in part because I was curious how effective the Permethrin would be in really buggy weather – that is with DEET on the face and arms. People swear by it and while I haven’t found any ticks on me yet and saw a mosquitoes collapse after crawling on my jeans ๐Ÿ‘– I’m not totally convinced of the hype. I did spray my hat yesterday too. Unlike DEET I might also be able to safely apply it to the hammock which would help with the bugs when I’m lying there.

Tonight will be scattered sprinkles before 11pm, then showers likely, mainly after 3am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 9pm. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 19% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 4:59 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:32 am in the east-northeast (62ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is 57 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:13 am with sun in the east-northeast (69ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 57 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 10am. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

In four weeks on June 14 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:34 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 21 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 68 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 56 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1892.

So the Gas Up tractor and agricultural festival is canceled for June. ๐Ÿšœ I think that was kind of expected during the pandemic although they’re considering trying to reschedule for mid August. Could be hot then I’m thinking though. Assuming it’s even an option then – they didn’t seem too hopeful. ๐Ÿ˜”

Looking ahead, Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 3 weeks and Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 4 weeks.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿฆ…Only 5 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

I was doing some reading on the internet and found out that the lower part of Piseco Powley Road is still not fully rebuilt from the October 2019 storm and that the road is closed. โ›บ So I guess that’s out for the weekend. Hopefully soon though they’ll finish the rebuild and open the gates all the way. There are other options but with the nice weather expected and the state campgrounds closed they’ll fill up quickly.

So the original plan of delaying my Memorial Day Weekend for one week is back on the agenda. ๐Ÿ”™ That’s fine, it gives me more time to pack and potentially opens up more options as there will be fewer people camping, especially if I drive up Thursday evening or Friday morning on a non holiday weekend. I never did a spring trip this year with a long weekend so I have the time.

Come June for example, it’s likely Perkins Clearing Road and West River Road and White House in Wells will open. ๐Ÿšง But also I expect I could get that campsite up on Pumpkin Hollow Road when on a non holiday weekend. If it’s hot though it would be nice to be able to walk to water. Betty Brook or Duck Pond are good options in Schoharie County. ๐Ÿ’ญ

East Branch Sacandaga River is fine but it’s noisy ๐Ÿ  and the river isn’t that great for fishing due to the fluctuating water levels. A drought in summer – as was a case a few years ago can leave the river with only a few inches of water. Right now, Cherry Ridge and Finger Lakes National Forest are closed for camping.

Maybe Moose River will be my summer vacation if Piseco Powley Road โ›บ is not rebuilt. While I assume ny mid summer that the Finger Lakes National Forest will reopen for camping if the pools and beaches aren’t open I’m sure if I’d want to do summer vacation there.

Other options include the Allegheny and Green Mountain National Forest. ๐Ÿ—ป The later is open but who knows if the current limits on out of state visitors will be lifted by summer. That Grout Pond beach is fun and some of sites along Forest Road 73 not only have good sun โ˜€ for solar but also cell reception.

May 17, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€! I bet a lot of debris got burned up in people’s bonfires over the weekend ๐Ÿ”ฅ some of it not wood now that the spring time restrictions are over. As a farmer kid once told me back in the day, they can’t see the black smoke if you burn it at night.

Three weeks to Strawberry Moon ๐Ÿ“. No its not the color of strawberry milk. I did see some Juneberries up hiking at Thacher Park yesterday. They are fun to pick and eat. The wild blueberries and black raspberries. ๐Ÿ’ Oh sweet cherries. I do need to get to Schoharie Valley and get some fresh fruit come June. Even if Mine Kill is closed this summer there are other swimming holes. ๐ŸŠ But maybe Governor one percent will change his mind.

A little bit of blue sky today but not a lot. Partly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 48 degrees. A surprisingly nice spring day. It would have been nice to get out of town this weekend but the forecast was iffy and I things to do in town plus I’m broke. I mean I got paid last week but it seems like the money never lasts long enough. ๐Ÿ’ต

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2017.

If it’s nice today, ๐Ÿฆ I’ll grab my binoculars and head out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center to do some birding and exercise. ๐Ÿƒ I’d kind of like this to be a stay home day, as I feel like I drive too much with buses being stopped ๐Ÿš and needing to get on the internet from the library. ๐Ÿ“š I’ve really gotten into nature study lately. ๐Ÿธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:33 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:27 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 58 seconds over yesterday.

It should be another nice mild night ๐ŸŒƒ for sitting out back, even if the stars โœจ aren’t that great. Got to enjoy the nice weather as long as possible before it gets super hot and muggy before winter returns. With the pandemic on tap, it could be a very different summer.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly after 4am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6pm. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 66 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 5th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 6am. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

I finally got my 1,200 buck Donald Trump endorsed check. ๐Ÿ“จ Happy Election Year! โ˜‘ Corona 2020 for President. It ducking sucks that they couldn’t direct deposit but I’ll have to deposit it on Monday. I am getting good at driving my big jacked up truck through the ATM ๐Ÿง lane. I’ll put $400 into savings and $800 into index funds. ใ€ฝI figure save the money now and eventually turn it into something fun in a decade or two from now like a tractor, ๐Ÿšœ an AR-15 ๐Ÿ”ซ or something that makes black smoke and pretty colors in the burn pit. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1999.

The long weekend looks better now. ๐Ÿ‘ŒNext Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8am. โ˜€ Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

It’s starting to look like next weekend is back on โ›บ based on the forecast. That assumes that I can get Friday off which who knows. But I’m sure the forecast will turn to rain before that in Trump’s Amerika. I’ll have to make a decision before work tomorrow so I can decide to put in for Friday or not. I want to see when my screen tent is going to be delivered ๐ŸŽช as that will make all the difference with the black flies plus I don’t want it to be delivered while I’m not home. ๐Ÿก Otherwise there is always next week.

In four weeks on June 14 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:34 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 21 minutes and 28 seconds later then today. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 68 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 56 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1892.

Looking ahead, Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 3 weeks and Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 4 weeks.

May 16, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 46 degrees. Remarkably mild for this late in the night for mid May but then again it is mid May. Seems like it was March the last time I worked downtown, well actually it was. I haven’t been downtown since probably April when I picked up the work laptop.

It was a a beautiful spring day and I spent as much time as possible outdoors. ๐ŸŒธ Things are still fairly gray in the hill towns on the hills but at the same time many other places are quite green. This afternoon I hiked a Thacher Park ๐ŸŒฟand this evening hiked at the Pine Bush well after dark ๐ŸŒƒ – from 10 pm to 11:30 to be exact.

I would have stayed longer but my knee was aching from the Lyme Disease. ๐Ÿœ I hadn’t taken the pill before I left for the evening. The doxycycline is controlling the symptoms but I’m not convinced it’s killing the Lyme and it may return when the medication runs out on Monday. If necessary I guess I’ll see my doctor again. ๐Ÿ˜ท One good thing about working from home is it makes scheduling easier. Plus I didn’t want to stay too late and be fatigued driving home. ๐Ÿก

It seemed like the Permethrin worked well on my clothes. ๐Ÿ‘š So far no ticks I’ve found and the one black fly that landed on my jeans was crippled before it could bite. Didn’t protect my face from bugs out hiking but my arms were good as I applied Picardin to them. ๐Ÿ˜ต As much as I have pause about bathing myself in chemicals, ticks are insane this year and I am very worried about getting sick from Lyme and not recovering. Already I’m not doing great. I’m not willing to become a shut in just to avoid ticks.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 21st. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 26% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 5:00 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:33 am in the east-northeast (63ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is 59 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:13 am with sun in the east-northeast (69ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 59 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 10am. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Might be a decent day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2017.

So I’m pretty sure I’m going to delay my Memorial Day Weekend trip for the week after. โ›บ I’ve been on and off but I don’t think the weather will be all that great for Memorial Day Weekend based on the latest forecast and I’m not convinced that the gates north of the potholers will be open this year for Memorial Day Weekend. Been so wet and I know they had to rebuild the road last fall and with the pandemic everything is messed up. I’m thinking I might take Friday and Monday the week after Memorial Day and camp three nights either at the House Pond campsite or maybe up at Powley Place at one of the sandy open sites where I can use the solar to keep my batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ charged and hang my hammock and set up my screen tent ๐ŸŽช for black fly prevention.

I am running low on socks and a few other supplies ๐Ÿช which I will probably order from Walmart online but I’ve found it hard to come up with a $35 order for free shipping ๐Ÿ“ฆ as the online store actually lacks a lot of the products that the regular stores would have in normal times. Walmart isn’t stocking any non food items in their retail outlets so if they sell out, it’s gone.

In four weeks on June 13 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:34 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 22 minutes and 2 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 65 and 57 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 56 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1892.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is in 1 week, and Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 5 weeks.

May 15, 2020 Night

Good evening! Rain and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees. More of a drizzle now but around 7 pm the sky was really pouring.

No evening walk ๐Ÿšถ due to the rain. That downpour and wind was intense for a while – it must have knocked down a tree ๐ŸŒฒas I heard somebody in the neighborhood with a chain saw. But as fast as it came it was gone.

I was working down at the library parking lot today and it started to get so hot with that sun โ˜€. Got to hook up the fan and maybe bring water but then I’ll need to run home for bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ breaks. The library Wi-Fi has gotten so popular lately – some times you’ll see a dozen cars in the lot with folks on their laptops. ๐Ÿ’ป But it’s fine, everybody is maintaining social distancing and my laptop stays charged off the sun.

Working on a new interactive mapping feature for the blog that will allow for large format maps that can be scrolled ๐Ÿ“œ left and right and maybe zoomed in based on the jquery library I eventually end up linking against.

Also been experimenting with historical topographic maps and removing their collars ๐Ÿ—พ which turns out to be super easy to do creating seemless historical maps of larger areas like Moose River Plains. The accuracy of those early USGS maps is amazing as long as you don’t zoom in too far beyond the scale.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10pm. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Another night sleeping with the windows open. I like the fresh air and things are quite with everything shut down due to pandemic. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1980.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 35% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 5:01 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:34 am in the east-northeast (63ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and one second earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:14 am with sun in the east-northeast (70ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. North wind 7 to 9 mph. Should be a real nice day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

I’m thinking Thacher Park OSI parcel tomorrow from that lesser used trail head to the Nature Center at Thompsons Lake ๐Ÿฆ and some of the lesser used trails to the overlooks. ๐Ÿธ I want to do some bird watching and just general wildlife observation ๐Ÿ”ญ if I can find some quiet places to sit in the woods. I’ll definitely be wearing my jeans ๐Ÿ‘– that are treated with Permethrin.

I’ve really been struggling with the Lyme disease this time. ๐Ÿœ The doxycycline works but it’s not as effective as the first time I got Lyme last October and there are times I am sore and stiff. I do keep getting out – walking 5 to 10 miles a day around the neighborhood – but at times I feel exhausted and just so stiff and sore. I’m be out of doxycycline Tuesday and if I still feel like shit I’m going to call the doctor ๐Ÿ˜ท.

I went to the the laundromat and hardware store today. ๐Ÿ‘š Washed my clothes and sprayed three pare of older jeans and t-shirts with Permethrin. Users of it swear by it for ticks. Certainly the Army uses a lot of it as do cattle farmers for fly control. I picked up two empty spray bottles so I’d have them to apply the chemicals. Mixing the chemical 20 to 1 with water wasn’t too bad, twenty oz of mixture pretty much covered three jeans and shirts. Didn’t see any staining or odors. I washed my hands carefully after use but noticed no incidental skin reaction. The chemical supposedly lasts six washings but honestly I’d probably reapply it before packing for any major camping trip or extended outdoor activity because if it knocks down the ticks it’s worth it without a question.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿฆ…Only 1 week remains until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

I made no decision about next weekend. โ›บ Unless the forecast calls for exceptionally nice weather next weekend the plan will be avoid the crowds Memorial Day Weekend and work only three days the following week, leave Thursday and take Friday off celebrate the unofficial kick off to summer with fewer crowds and the potholers a little warmer.
