April 29, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Fog and clouds and 58 degrees out for my morning walk past the Bethlehem Central High School. ๐ŸŒซ Calm wind. The dew point is 57 degrees. A tad bit of a mugginess in the air. The skies will clear Saturday around 5 am. I am glad I at least was able to get out for my walk.

Yesterday was an incredibly busy day ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿป‍๐Ÿ’ผ between the lunch time meeting downtown and the project I was working on. ๐Ÿ“„ Kind of nice having things start to get closer back to normal. ๐Ÿ˜ท Still wearing the mask on the bus and hallways, but with everybody vaccinated didn’t have to be quite so concerned about maintaining six-feet in the office, ๐Ÿ”€. I do love the view from my office in the Smith building, but when I return downtown, I might actually be moving to a new private office, with not such a great view but closer to department I work with these days.

I went over to John Wolcott’s house for a while ๐Ÿ“œ and while we didn’t find anything too exciting, it was an interesting afternoon in the sense a bunch of bullets rang out down the street about 5 minutes after I arrived. ๐Ÿ”ซ Sounded like a 22lr gun, I tuned into police scanner and they said it was somebody shooting a long-gun in a blue Jeep liberty. ๐Ÿ’ฅ They closed off the street for a while, and I don’t know what ended up happening but by the time I went to catch the bus, ๐ŸšŒ everything was packed up and gone except for one remaining police car. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ‍โ™€๏ธ Don’t you know, you aren’t supposed to be shooting off your guns within 500 feet of an occupied structure that you don’t own. ๐ŸŒฒ One of the advantages of being in Adirondacks — being able to shoot your guns without people getting all pissy like they do in the ghetto. ๐Ÿš

Today will have showers likely, mainly between 2pm and 3pm, then rain after 3pm. Patchy fog before 9am. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 64 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 1st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1888. 1 inch of snow fell back in 1885.โ„ Hardly something to write about, then again Saturday is May Day.

I am not expecting a real nice day, โ›ˆ and probably real wet later but at least I got out for my morning walk. I am thinking about going to laundromat ๐Ÿ‘• but it will depend on how the day goes, I might change my mind later on. Starting to run low on groceries, but my list of things to do for work is so long ๐Ÿ“‹ that I don’t know if leaving my computer during the day is going to work. ๐Ÿ“จ I’m also having some issues with emails on my phone. I’ll have to try to figure that out as I’ve been super busy lately. ๐Ÿค– But I guess it’s a good change, it makes me feel far less bored, and I’m getting important things done.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 62° from the due south horizon (-8.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:15 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (284°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:54 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 6 seconds with dusk around 8:24 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:02 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 62 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and one minute of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain before 8pm, then showers, mainly between 8pm and 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 53 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1874.

Ever since I got out camping I’ve been sleeping really well. ๐Ÿ’ค It’s amazing what a few nights in the wilderness can do for sleeping. ๐Ÿ›Œ Maybe it’s the campfires ๐Ÿ”ฅ or having a few beers up at camp, ๐Ÿบ but it’s probably just listening to sound of wilderness.

The weekend forecast has improved. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 55. Northwest wind 14 to 16 mph. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 68. Maximum dew point of 48 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. Yeah, I’ll take that forecast but it should also awaken the black flies. ๐Ÿœ That said, I think this is a stay at home weekend, just because next Monday doesn’t look great, and I just got back from the Adirondacks.

Looking ahead, there are 8 weeks until Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid and humid weather partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. Yeah, that’s late June. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

April 27, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• ! It was pretty brilliant last night, although I didn’t stay up too late or under the moonlight because it was too cold with breeze, and because I decided the fire risk was too high to have a fire. Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† . Partly cloudy and 42 degrees in Speculator, NY. โ›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Maybe more sun for a while mid-day but I’m not expecting a real beautiful day for sure.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 5pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. Kind of like today, although I am sure it is warmer back in Albany. The skies will clear around 11 am.er back in Albany. The record high of 91 was set in 1962. Nothing like that today. There was a dusting of snow in 1946.โ„

Back up a the Spectulator Library, working remotely. ๐Ÿ’ป I have to head home this evening after work, as I have a meeting on Wednesday downtown, and truth be told the next few days are going to be quite rainy. But it’s nice to get away for a few days for sure. I wish we had more sun today, โ˜€๏ธ but I didn’t use the electric lights last night, for quick take down, so my battery bank is in good shape ๐Ÿ”‹ for today. I might work down by the lake after lunch, it depends on how mild it was.

Last night was nice, but a bit chilly. ๐Ÿ’จ While there was a lot of moonlight, the wind was whipping around although by the time I got back from my walk after dark along Old Route 8B, there wasn’t so much of a cold wind whipping around. ๐ŸŒŸ But with the dry grass and the wind, ๐ŸŒฑ I decided the night was best for sitting next to the propane heater, looking at the stars rather then starting a fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.4° from the due south horizon (-9.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:16 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (284°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (290°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:55 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:25 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:04 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 13 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1947.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 11 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 50. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 59. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. Actually, that isn’t too bad when you consider you are comparing Spectulator weather to Albany weather. Not sure if I have plans for the weekend — I’ve thought about maybe Madison County, as it’s been a while since I’ve been on the road, although maybe I want a weekend off after this weekend. I’ve really wanted to do some paddling along Nine Mile Swamp ๐Ÿšค and I could certainly work remotely one day up at Cherry Ridge Camping Area.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:03 pm with dusk at 8:34 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 61 and 45 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.

April 23, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Going to Be a Beautiful Friday! Maybe not super warm, but an improvement over yesterday. Two weeks to 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Summer is coming. Less then two months now, and we could certainly have some nice warm days come May. Even mid-next week looks quite pleasant. This morning, it’s sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Cold start to the morning, but it will be fairly warm this afternoon bar the breeze. Wearing the hoodie over my shirt for the morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ

Yesterday, I went over to John Wolcott’s House ๐Ÿ”Ž and spent several hours going through his Pinksterfest archives, looking for a misplaced long-lost letter about the Fort Orange dig. โœ‰๏ธ Didn’t find it but there was a lot of interesting things about the history of the Pinksterfest ๐ŸŒธ and the Mid-crosstown Arterial in his files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I wanted to go to the Earth Day Rally ๐ŸŒŽ but by the time I got there after work, the rally had already broken up. Part of it was I didn’t catch the bus I wanted to get downtown, ๐ŸšŒ because the bus schedule still has the reduced rush-hour service, and I didn’t check it real careful. The Earth Day rally was supposed to go until 6 PM but I think it ended early with the police protests ๐Ÿš“ in the other part of the city. ๐Ÿ‘Š Truth be told, I am just a lot less interested politics and citizen activism these days. ๐Ÿฆ‹ Save the Pine Bush is my big thing.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 58 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2007. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 60° from the due south horizon (-10.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:08 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

Today I am going to get packed for the Adirondacks ๐Ÿ• as my hope is head north tonight for a long weekend, possibly into next week. ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฒ I am thinking about working remotely on Monday from the Adirondacks, as long as the weather is nice enough and maybe staying into Tuesday, a bit in a different campsite so to limit my stay to 3 nights in any one location. I have a lot going on today, so it’s going to be busy for packing, and I want to try to get to store mid-day and maybe down to the laundromat when I work, or maybe I have enough clothes if I wait and reuse some jeans — that is if I pick up another pair today. ๐Ÿ‘– Going to be a cold night up north with the wind, but I’ll have my heater โ™จ๏ธ and I can build a small fire for warmth. ๐Ÿ”ฅ still going to be some snow to deal with up north.

Really starting to get a bit low on clothes, ๐Ÿ‘• and as I haven’t bought any in over a year as I’ve not needed as much working from home. ๐Ÿ‘ž My dress shoes are still in the office, sitting drawer they’ve been since the beginning of the pandemic. Going to need a good polish when I go get them, as come May I think I’ll be in office more, although it gets tricky with all the remaining COVID-restrictions. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ That and I haven’t been to the laundromat or my parents house in over a week.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (288°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 8:16 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (131°) at an altitude of 45° from the horizon, 231,553 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:53 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Today my cellphone renews ๐Ÿ“ฒ and I’m hoping that will go well. Still not sure if my new credit card is working ๐Ÿ’ณ, those temporary $1 authorizations that caught my eye last weekend still haven’t dropped off the bill. I should maybe call the credit card company to ensure my card is still active. I am starting to think it was all just a system glitch with the dozen or so $1 authorizations, maybe something went wrong when I went to buy milk ๐Ÿฅ› the other day at the store, and my worry is just that. Pure silliness. But you can’t be too careful these days. Need to make sure that’s straightened out before I go north.

Also, we are doing another recording session with John Wolcott and some of other Save the Pine Bush people for our history project ๐Ÿ“œ tonight, but if I am going north, I am not going to be able to participate. But it is what it is, I’ve wanted to get out of town for some weeks now. ๐Ÿ• It should be a real nice night, but maybe a bit chilly. Maybe a little snow up north. Probably be setting up after dark, but I have flashlights ๐Ÿ”ฆ and lights, as I have my therapy session at 4 PM and I’m sure it will run after 5 PM. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ My lantern is working well. ๐Ÿฎ Also I might have to work late, so who knows, but I’d really like to get out of town today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 25th. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Should be a very nice spring day. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 54 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

I am chewing over my options for hikes on Saturday, but I am still leaning towards Pine Orchard. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ, although there are a handful of other options. There are a lot of hikes I haven’t done over the years, but one thing to consider is how muddy the trails will be. It might actually be better to just do a road hike to stay out of the mud. I’ll have to think about it, especially if I am planning to spend part of next week up north.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely, mainly before 2pm. ๐ŸŒง Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

Seems like it will be wet on Sunday, but actually not that bad when you consider total precipitation. โ›ˆ It would be fun to work up north on Monday, maybe sit out by Lake Pleasant listening to some music using either my laptop or phone for work. Might be a bit cool on Monday but I can wear a jacket and sun will feel real nice. Then I might head home on Monday or find somewhere and stay through Tuesday or Wednesday. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Mason Lake isn’t a option though for another month as the road is closed due to mud season and frost coming out of the ground.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm with dusk at 8:33 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 65 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 67 degrees. That will be real nice. We hit a record high of 92 back in 1930.

Route 10 Farm

Been reading a lot about farm dumps lately

Been reading a lot about farm dumps lately … ๐Ÿ—‘

Old Farm Dump

.

It’s hard to find rural property that has been used for farming or homesteading, that hasn’t had trash and discards dumped on at least part of the land over the years. Buying land, inevitably means cleaning up land or at least managing old dumps on it.

Old dumps can be a problem, particularly if there are fluids, pesticides or other toxins dumped on them, although many are quite old at this point and what would have leaked out is long ago. Likewise, hardware disease from livestock chewing on old glass and cans can be an issue, digging into the soil and hitting junk when gardening or farming, and just the nuisance of looking at a waste pile.

On the other hand, old dumps can be an asset too. Dumped and buried once useless materials like broken cast iron, hunks of scrap metal, even old wire has value today as scrap metal. Some old things are now antiques and treasure. Even discarded glass and porcelain can be dug up, smashed and used for aggregate for various projects around the homestead and farm. Not all old waste necessarily has to be removed and hauled to a landfill.

Old dumps can also be used for their original purpose — dumping. Some relatively non-toxic wastes may not be worth hauling off the farm. A lot of landfills don’t want burn barrel ash due to the fire risk, and dumping the ash can allow things like partially burnt paper to biodegrade. Concrete and other building debris might not be worthwhile to haul off-site, especially when there is an existing dump that can be filled. Junk appliances with no scrap value might be fine to add to the dump. Obviously, to prevent settling you don’t want to be burying a lot of wood or organic wastes, or anything significantly toxic that could come to bite you or a future owner.

Now I get the nuisance impact of it all. But often old dumps can be covered with rock and dirt, packed with manure and allowed to reseed and grow. And we shouldn’t be so damn afraid of waste, especially when everybody, even most careful homesteader or farmer generates so much of it. Maybe contemporary anti-dumping and liability laws make it hush-hush, but it goes on still to this day in the back woods.

Old Dump

April 19, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. It’s Earth Week, a day where they celebrate spring tillage ๐Ÿšœ and that earthy smell of freshly tiled earth, diesel smoke and cow manure. ๐Ÿ’ฉ And rolling coal, ๐Ÿ›ป along with politicians lying about how they plan to save the earth ๐ŸŒŽ by allowing polluters to pollute more and covering the earth with cadmium-infused glass. ๐Ÿญ Four weeks to Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ. June is dairy month, although we reach the 70s by mid-May, although the cows like that. Partly sunny and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Cold start to the morning ๐ŸŒ… although that’s kind of my fault as I like sleeping with the windows open, so it feels more like January in my apartment then late April. But that’s fine, I’m enjoying my morning walk before work. ๐ŸšถI just sleep so much better with the windows open ๐Ÿ”ณ breathing in the fresh air and diesel smoke. Lol. I remember when I had that neighbor with that big throaty diesel that would rumble each morning before he left for his construction ๐Ÿšง worker ๐Ÿ‘ท job. Basically truck porn ๐Ÿ›ป. I did sleep like a baby so no complaints there. ๐Ÿ‘ถ Probably because I whine so much there days on the blog.

Today will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 25th. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1976. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Such a nice morning โ˜€ that I really should work down at library today ๐Ÿ–ฅ but I don’t think the nice weather is expected to last much longer into the afternoon with rain โ˜” showers pushing in. I have fair amount of bandwidth to use up by Friday so it’s not really necessary. At least wherever I work — at least for the morning, I can enjoy the fresh air and sunlight.

I keep watching for changes to bus schedules ๐Ÿš as an early indicator when to when work will be returning to downtown. ๐ŸšI feel like they will be restoring commuter service about the time they reopen the state buildings downtown ๐Ÿข. Still the park and ride sits abandoned but maintained in pristine condition 13 months into the pandemic. At this point, like so many people I have very mixed emotions about returning back to the downtown office. ๐Ÿ™ After all we’ve built such a remote work ๐Ÿ’ป infrastructure. ๐Ÿ’‰ Come a week from Wednesday, it will be two weeks since my last COVID-19 shot so I am pretty unlikely to pick up COVID, at least not severe COVID-19, although I’m sure it will be many more months of mask wearing ๐Ÿ˜ท at least on public transit and in places where people can’t keep 6 feet apart.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-12.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:04 pm with the sun in the west (280ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (286ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:42 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 8:11 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (221ยฐ) at an altitude of 68ยฐ from the horizon, 242,820 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:48 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 58 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Cut my hair ๐Ÿ’‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and sideburns yesterday, as I wanted to be cooler and cleaner with summer coming around. I have that hair trimmer which works pretty good job. The hat fits better ๐Ÿงข and the hair won’t get so matted with mud and sweat up at camp. โ›บ

Been continuing to monitor my bank accounts ๐Ÿ’ณ to watch for any fraudulent activity but I don’t see any but I’m hoping that those attempted $1 charges drop off it and the problem is over. I don’t want to have to order yet another card from the bank. I really can’t figure out what happened, as I’ve not done any Internet or phone purchases, and everything else has been dip-style purchases with the secure chip that doesn’t pass your credit card number through the machine. Maybe I have to tape something over card number from watching cameras, or I guess something could have read the strip even on the dip machine. ๐Ÿคช PARANOIA! I just hate dealing with coins ๐Ÿ’ต and exact change, after all these years of swipes.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 42 degrees at 3am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 28th. Should be a decent evening once the rain showers pass this afternoon. South wind around 5 mph. In 2020, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1875.

Weekend forecast looks pretty decent for late April. โ˜บ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 38 at 8pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

I really think this will be the weekend I make it to the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ• It certainly might be a nice weekend up north. I might then head out to Central New York in the following weeks, just because there isn’t as likely to have black flies every where. Depending on the status of remote work come May, I might go out there for a week. I think working down by Seneca Lake with my laptop could be quiet pleasant, doing some camping up in the National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒ I know, just wishful thinking. But I spent a lot of time last summer working from shore of Lake Pleasant and that dock on Sacanadaga Riverwalk. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Still undecided if I will drive up on Friday or Saturday. I noticed they’ve raised the price on pre-treated safe and legal firewood at Stewarts, but maybe I can find a pallet in town I can chop up and burn, and use my magnet to pick out any nails from the fire pit. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿงฒ

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. By then the greenies’ burn ban will be over, so when you do your clean outs in country, make sure to pile enough pallets and try not to burn too much noxious rubber or PVC products. ๐Ÿ”ฅ How much a different world it could have been had not that redneck been burning garbage upwind of a former Governor and high-price John’s country home in Columbia County. ๐Ÿ›ข On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.

Mountains Fade Away

April 18, 2021 – Looking Ahead This Week

Monday and Wednesday look to be worse days of the week, with showers and cold on Thursday. Other then that a fairly seasonable week, with maybe some needed precipitation to reduce the fire risk and help things green up. At times the temperatures will be a bit below normal but not super cold.

April 17, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Two weeks to May ๐Ÿ•Š . Overcast, cold and gray around 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Maybe a few breaks of sun ๐ŸŒฅ but hardly a banner day. There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. No snow locally, but certainly kind of a gray and cloudy day. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 53 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. Northwest wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2002. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1965.โ„

While not the greatest day after ๐ŸŒฅ it looks like it is relatively dry and will be warm enough later on to go out to Five Rivers for some bird watching ๐Ÿฆ and wildlife observation. ๐Ÿธ Been working on learning my bird calls better so I can spot the birdies without seeing them first. Not sure with the clouds, cool condition and breeze though I’ll see all that much.

I think I made the right decision to stay in town this weekend, ๐Ÿก even thought I would have liked to gotten out of town. Next weekend though will be probably the last week without many black flies ๐Ÿœ in the Adirondacks, although if they are bad out come I can use the screen tent. ๐ŸŽช Next week looks better, although who knows it looks like we are heading to a cold and damp late April in long range. ๐ŸŒง ๐ŸŒบ When there is no hope, there is spring. Before you know it we will have 80 degree days and the muggers will be back. ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ I guess rain is good in the sense it reduces the fire risk, but none of this clouds and no sky pee-pee, please.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 58° from the due south horizon (-12.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:02 pm with the sun in the west (279°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west-northwest (285°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:40 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (256°) at an altitude of 52° from the horizon, 247,967 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 37 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. Light north wind. In 2020, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1948.

I am watching the weekend forecast ๐Ÿ˜Ž for next week, and while it looks a bit too promising at this point — usually a sunny weekend forecast turns to rain over the next 6 days — I am hopeful, and these days, one can only have hope for a better future. Maybe I can go north or west after my therapy session, as the days have gotten longer and I can buy wood so I have what I need for a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ or maybe leave early Saturday, hike ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ then camp. ๐Ÿ• I would kind of like to do the hiking option, kind of interested in exploring Pine Orchard, although I might want my muck boots with the mud being as deep as it likely is this time of year. ๐Ÿ‘ข

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until May ๐Ÿ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. It’s coming, note the black flies. ๐Ÿœ On that day in 2020, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 61 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001. We could certainly hit 80 degrees before that, although with the current weather pattern that seems unlikely.
