July 14, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 68 degrees in Dormansville, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. Out at my parents house for the night then back to work tomorrow for the week before vacation.

Busy week ahead, πŸ‘two nights I’ll be working on Pine Bush stuff at the library, one night at a John Wolcott house and then packing on Thursday night. Nice thing about the Finger Lakes is that I can buy food and supplies when I’m out there and visit the laundromat if necessary. I probably will head out to Alleghany County the second half of the week and spend some time in Pennsylvania the end of the weekend.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 55 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 11th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11pm. Looking ahead, Altamont Fair Opens 🎑 is a month away, Sunset Before 7:30 PM πŸŒ† is in 7 weeks, Autumn πŸ‚ is in 10 weeks and Average High is 60 πŸ‚ is in 13 weeks.

Cloudy Day at the Potholers

July 14, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Happy National Nude Day. Partly sunny and 79 degrees at the Mine Kill State Park. Not nude here but wearing my bathing suit as I swim. There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. This is a nice day with lots of sun but the breeze is a bit chilly when you get out of the pool. But I guess that is to be expected, it’s often cool here in the foot hills of the Catskills.

It’s been a nice weekend in this vacationatte of sorts, and overnight trip to Schoharie County, β›Ί although I ended up drinking, well getting over served, 🍻 beer and shots with the other camper down at the big campsite on the Betty Brook. But it was a fun night hanging out with some cool people from Jefferson who are converting an old school bus 🚍 to a camper using junked RV components. Small town life must be fun.

After hanging out with them until quarter to midnight I built a small fire to burn some camp garbage and just to have a fire πŸ”₯ I could have brought it home but fire is more fun, watching as the paper blackened and the wrappers melted. Cracked open yet another beer 🍺 and then laid back in my hammock until 1:30 am listening to a podcast, probably dozing off until a rain shower came through. πŸ’¦ The fake lightening bugs were neat although not as pretty as up at Moose River Plains.

This morning was a slow one, as I was a little bit hung over, 😩 after the previous evening. Plus I left my propane tank home, so I had to build a fire, get good coals to make coffee β˜• and eggs for breakfast, but a campfire breakfast 🍳 sure is good when your hung over. I got to do more campfire breakfast on vacation, maybe with charcoal as that’s easier to light then building a fire every time. I also spent some time swinging back and forth on the most nice of mornings in the hammock. Departed camp at noon πŸ•›.

Today I hiked up Vromans Nose πŸ‘ƒ and stopped for a few pictures. Also visited Looking Glass Pond 🎣 but did no fishing as I was running late. Got blueberries and cherries πŸ’ at Boreingers, got sweet corn 🌽 at Max Shauls, and ice cream 🍦 at the restaurant at Fultonham. And now I’m swimming 🏊 at Mine Kill State Park.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 53 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 7pm. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light in the evening. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 72 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1950.

The sun will set at 8:33 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 79 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 21st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1997.

On this day in 1969, the $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills are officially withdrawn from circulation. After this date, if you wanted to buy a large purchase in cash, you needed a lot of hundred dollars in bills. πŸ’΅ Or just use a credit card or a bank check. πŸ’³ They had last been printed in 1945, and were finally dropped from circulation in 1969, in part as an effort to reduce corruption and money scams.πŸ’°πŸ‘Ώ

One month πŸ“… from now the Altamont Fair Opens 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm with dusk at 8:30 pm. They say that all good things must end some day, autumn leaves must fall. πŸπŸ‚ But first fair season.

Peaking Thru The Trees

July 3, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Mostly sunny β˜€ and 91 degrees at the land of the Albanian. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 61 degrees. The humidity actually isn’t that bad this afternoon but I can’t promise that will be the story for the full weekend.

I’m heading home now with the hope of leaving by four and maybe taking 30 up to Moose Plains rather than the expressway. With Northway traffic it might not be that much longer. πŸš™ πŸš—πŸššπŸš—I’ll probably skip the Thruway too but who knows. I liked taking US 20 to Daunesburg Churches Road to NY 20 but that’s kind of slow. But non stressful. β›Ί I don’t care how late I get up there but it’s nicer to be driving in the light.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 82 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 5 mph.

The record low of 44 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon πŸŒ’ with 7% illuminated with the moon setting at 9:37 pm. The moon will rise at 7:17 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Monday night. The Buck Moon 🌝 is on Monday, July 15th. The sun will rise at 5:22 am with the first light at 4:47 am, which is 34 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, an increase of 50 seconds over last night.

A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 104 was set in 1911.

In four weeks on July 31 the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then today. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 86 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 62 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1917.

Flag on Hang Gliders Cliff

July 3, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Get Away Day before Independence Day, of course. Four weeks to Teeth Cleaning Day πŸ˜ƒ. I figure that way I’ll remember the appointment. Partly sunny and 68 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. That said, the driver ain’t waiting, she left the station πŸš‰ a minute early, dropped the hammer πŸ”¨ at the green light 🚦 and has powered through at least one red light. Must be her last trip of the day. Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. Hot and humid.

That said maybe she was flying ✈ because she knew how bad the traffic would be in the Empire State Plaza. πŸš•πŸš“πŸš—πŸšπŸšŒ Things are so pokey this morning. With the traffic delays going through I’m kind of glad I didn’t drive in, as it’s a lot more fun to be blogging on my phone, sitting on the air conditioned bus then wrangling my way through bumper to bumper traffic. I’m sure I’ll have my share to deal with this afternoon.

Things are packed except for the cooler and the propane but I’ll get those things after work and be off by six or maybe earlier if they close the office down early. 🏒 I expect a slow commute for the first half hour but the air conditioning works well in the truck and it’s not like it gets real dark until like 9:15 pm or later in the Adirondacks this time of year. Google Maps estimates with traffic, I’ll be to Wakely Dam by 8:40. πŸŒ„

I expect it will be a nice weekend at Moose River Plains, but certainly a hot one too. I heard it was going to be buggy, 🐜so I bought a container of DEET, Picardin and Oil of Eucalyptus insect repellents. All but the Picardin came in plastic spray bottles, which is handy for when they run out — don’t have to save and bring to transfer station. Hopefully that will control the bugs well.

I am bringing the kayak, as one night I’ll probably take it out on Helldiver Pond for some evening fishing and enjoying the sunset. 🎣 I doubt I’ll go out on Cedar River Flow this year, but my mind could change. Or maybe I’ll take it out on one of Chain Lakes or even Moss Lake. I’m thinking of on Saturday doing the Stillwater Firetower — or maybe Sunday, it depends on what the weather looks like come Saturday and how soon the front come through.🚢

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 89 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Light north wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 94 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1911. The real humidity builds on after I’m up in the Adirondacks.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 63 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 8pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1971.

On this day in 1886, the New-York Tribune becomes the first newspaper to use a linotype machine, πŸ’» eliminating typesetting by hand βœ‹. I am pretty sure that like a computer only a little bit more primative. Now they probably use computers but not at Tribune because they don’t exist any more.

Independence Day will be sunny and hot, with a high near 91. β˜€ Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Muggy as duck with dew points approaching or exceeding seventy. Even in Pennsylvania you can get a ticket for going that fast. I’m glad I’ll be up in the Adirondacks sipping and ice cold beer. 🍻 I just hope that I won’t run out beer but they probably sell that in Inlet.

Friday starts the dog days of summer. 🐢 Hot and muggy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. β˜€ Partly sunny, with a high near 89. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Summer weather, with the muggers in full force.

Saturday looks pretty unstable but Sunday will be absolutely beautiful. πŸ˜• Saturday, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8am, then showers likely between 8am and noon, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 72 at 10am.

Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees. Sunday will be really nice, I should try to maximize the most of the day. I might do some hiking on one of the shorter trails along NY 28 south of Old Forge, as that’s the way I plan to come home.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until *MY* Teeth Cleaning Day πŸ˜ƒ when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:48 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 86 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1917.

Saturday night

June 23, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday on this most beautiful day. Three weeks to National Nude Day πŸ‘±. Mostly sunny and 64 degrees at Perkins Clearing. There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 46 degrees. Breezy for sure, but it’s nice in the hammock.

Slept into 8:30 after the most starry of nights πŸŒƒ then started to take down camp made up eggs for breakfast. Camp stove has a gas leak, it melted a hole in the table. I’m going to have to take apart the stove and fix the leak and patch the table. It’s such a nice day on the hammock but I can’t be lazy like yesterday and lay on it all day. Already producing over 50 watts through the solar panel.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 13th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 6pm. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1888.

The sun will set at 8:42 pm with dusk around 9:18 pm, which is 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 9 seconds over yesterday.

Once I get packed, I will head over to Spectator hike the nature trail and then go for a paddle on the Sacandaga River.🚀 Blustery today but hopefully the river itself won’t be too choppy. After padding I’ll probably try out the swimming beach to get washed up a bit before heading home. πŸƒ

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. West wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1932.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until National Nude Day πŸ‘± when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 88 and 72 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.

Goodnow Mountain

June 22, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 56 degrees at Perkins Clearing Easement in the Adirondacks. πŸŒƒ Stars are nice but there is still a fair amount of clouds around and despite the open skies a lot of light pollution from Speculator and Lake Pleasant which are only three or four miles away. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. It actually is pretty cool when the breeze picks up. I have my hoodies and vest on, I might sit by the fire later again as it’s cool on the hammock but the stars ✨ are pretty above although how I have the laser light aimed it’s getting in my eyes from time to time and that’s annoying.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. Northwest wind around 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1940.

Today was a fairly lazy day, spending several hours in the hammock after sleeping in this morning. 😴 I still can’t believe how much my lip swelled from the horse fly bite. πŸ’‹In an hour or so it was back to normal. Lots of horse flies and mosquitoes especially yesterday and a few black flies left. 🐜 Not a good time of the year if you’re sensetive to bug bites. Did a bunch of reading πŸ“– and hiked two miles each way on Jessup River Road to the river of the same day and fished. With the solar and two accessory batteries I prefer to avoid driving as much as possible while at camp both to save fuel and because then I don’t have to worry if I want to have a few drinks. 🍻

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon πŸŒ– with 62% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:20 am. I’ll probably be asleep by then. The moon will set up a tomorrow at 11:10 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Monday night with a chance of t-storms then chance of showers. The Buck Moon 🌝 is on Monday, July 15th. Buck yeah. The sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:41 am, which is 16 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 34 minutes of darkness, an increase of 8 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 7am. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1888.

I’m going to paddle the Sacandaga River tomorrow from Speculator down to the rapids past the Kujamunk. 🚀 That’s a nice paddle and do some fishing 🎣 and maybe swim 🏊 if it’s not too cold. I’m hoping the water won’t be too choppy with the wind, I’ll probably stay out of Lake Pleasant with the kayak. Then back to Albany to unpack and work on Monday although at least I won’t have to dress up and can take the express bus to work. 🚍

In four weeks on July 20 the sun will be setting at 8:32 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then tonight. That will be the first or second day of summer vacation most likely. In 2018 on that day, we had hot weather, sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 88 and 57 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 83 and 62 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1991.

This past week the solar panel on my truck generated 500 watt hours of power or a half kilowatt hour. πŸ”‹About 7 cents worth of electricity at home hooked to the grid. It would have generated more but the alternator topped off the batteries when driving and when there is no load on the system, the solar controller discards the excess power. πŸ”Œ I probably could leave the accessory batteries disconnected from the alternator – maybe I’ll do that on the way home although with the kayak on the roof of the truck and the CB radio and phone pulling 15 watts off the battery that isn’t ideal.

Looking ahead, Hottest Time of the Year πŸ˜… is in 3 weeks, Ugly Truck Day 🚚 is in 4 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ is in 9 weeks, Average High 70 πŸŽ‘ is in 13 weeks and Autumn πŸ‚ is in 3 months.

 East Canada Creek

June 22, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 80 πŸ–! Well that’s not the case up here in the Adirondacks but still a beautiful day. Three weeks to Hottest Time of the Year πŸ˜…. Partly sunny and 64 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. There is a north-northwest breeze at 13 mph. The breeze is nice, no mosquitoes today but a big ol horse fly got me in the hand βœ‹ where it’s tender. πŸƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 22nd. Maximum dew point of 47 at 10am. Northwest wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Good for the bugs. 🐜 A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1954.

I ended up sleeping 😴 in until 10:30 this morning, recovering from the week that was. Beautiful day for sure but not real warm by summer standards – not beach weather. I thought about hiking back to Pillsbury Lake but that’s such a tiny parking area, I’ve misplaced my flashlight πŸ”¦ last night when I was on the bucket shitter and it’s already afternoon. Maybe instead I’ll just fish the Miami River, maybe hiking rather than driving there. 🚢

The sun will set at 8:42 pm with dusk around 9:18 pm, which is 10 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 64 degrees. The dew point will be 48 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. Northwest wind 6 to 13 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1940. Be wearing the hoodie again tonight.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Hottest Time of the Year πŸ˜… when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm.
