Good morning! Happy 7 PM Sunset πŸŒ†! With the clouds it might be dark early. But I don’t know. Might clear out before sunset. I didn’t leave my porch light on. But the good news is the days are definitely getting longer now, and once it warms up a bit more, I’ll be able to go to the park after work. Next Friday is Spring 🌷. Much more wind in the city. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around noontime. β˜ƒοΈ

Maximum dew point of 48 at 12pm. πŸ–οΈ Breezy, with a southeast wind 15 to 23 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 38 mph. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2012. 22 inches of snow fell back in 1993.❄ I remember that snow storm, building snow caves in the after math. It was kind of fun. But at least outside of the Adirondacks, the snow is done it seems. Wait for me to be wrong with a late March or early April blizzard. Weather patterns can and do change.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 44.7Β° from the due south horizon (-26.1Β° vs. 6/21). The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:23 pm with the sun in the west (261Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (267Β°) starting at 6:57 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:27 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:01 pm. Today in 1991, the Justice Department announces that Exxon has agreed to pay $1 billion for the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. β›½ Some argue that wasn’t a big enough fine but at least it was another 20 odd years until the Deep Water Horizon.

Still undecided about my weekend plans. πŸ€” I do like the idea of going out to Madison County β›Ί but I know things will be real muddy and there will be still some snow and ice around. But it might be fun. The next few weekends with the Pine Bush Hike and my niece’s birthday party means I’ll be busy, and now I don’t have the Pine Bush lit drop on Saturday, I have more time to decide. Not sure what I would do there besides camp, maybe explore some of the state forests out that way. I’ll have to think about it more.

I went over to John Wolcott house yesterday and we found some old slides πŸ“· from the pig 🐽 farm on Rapp Road where Crossgates wants to build 🏒 the apartment complex and Costco. Seems almost certain now that Biden will be the democratic nominee. πŸ‘΄ And almost as soon as the election is over he will be forgotten. That said, I still think it’s good the democrats are running someone against President Trump as you never really know what can happen during an election.

Trees Along the Clear Cut

March 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Definitely a dark morning with the time change and the clouds. Next Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day πŸ€. Better watch out for the drunk drivers then, much more dangerous then the time change. It’s quite cloudy and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

I woke up this morning a bit congested πŸ‘ƒ but after a few cups of coffee β˜•I feel pretty good. I know all they ever tell you on the radio πŸ“» these days is if you feel the least bit sick to stay home. 😷 But if I did that I’d never make it to work as sinus congestion is pretty much the norm for me in the winter. I tell you can smell on the buses how much more aggressively they are cleaning them. I guess that forty million the governor wanted is getting put to good use.

One thing I can say, it’s nice waking up and having the windows open 🐦 and hearing the birds chirp in the morning and the fresh air. And the rumble of the passing cars and trucks. πŸš› I think this will be the last morning in a while for open windows, but I am sure we will have enough warm up in a few weeks. And certainly April weather will be upon us before you know it. That will really help with the sinuses.

Sat out back for a while last night, πŸŒƒ which was nice but it was cloudy out, and it wasn’t that quiet because my neighbors had a big fire going. I probably should have gone over, introduced myself and joined in some fun. Too bad I don’t have any alcohol to think.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after noon. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 62 degrees at 3pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 23rd. At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 58 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 41 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over yesterday.

Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 3rd. Southwest wind 9 to 15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1939.

People ask if I was smart to put $1,000 in that IRA last week to avoid taxes but I look at it as I still have 15 plus years to retirement and closer to 20 before I can touch the IRA. πŸ’΅ Any blip in the market is only on paper and I had to contribute a full $1k to open the account. Next week I’ll return to contributing to the IRA as I did previously with the Roth IRA. There will be ups and downs in the market but when contribute every two weeks it smooths out gyrations of the markets. πŸ“Š

Today in 1969, in Memphis, Tennessee, James Earl Ray pleads guilty to assassinating Martin Luther King, Jr. He later unsuccessfully attempts to recant. While he may not have been a CIA agent he certainly had the tacit support of the government.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees. Saturday I’m doing some door πŸšͺ knocking for Save the Pine Bush. Still not sure if I’m going to Schoharie this weekend. Probably not though.

Hanging Out at Palenville Overlook

March 8, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Daylight Savings Time πŸŒ†! I hope you remembered to set your clock ahead one hour last night but not on Microsoft Windows which reminds you with a big note. πŸ“ Linux does it too but doesn’t make a big deal about it. Next Sunday is Ides of March ✝. We will already be halfway through March at that point. Partly cloudy and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… Calm wind. Cold start to the morning but it’s expected to warm up quickly.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 57 degrees at 4pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 12th. I like it when April weather comes a month early. The record high of 68 was set in 2012. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 2013.❄

This morning I am meeting some people and going for a walk at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. 🌲🌲🌲It should be a really nice day. Later on I’ll probably go for a hike somewhere to be decided then out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. 🍲 Maybe Thacher Park?πŸ’ I haven’t been up way that in a while but some of trails might be really muddy. Tomorrow is going to be even nicer but alas me gotta work πŸ‘· and make money πŸ’΅ so I can enjoy the real nice weather when it happens. β˜€

In 1965, Thirty-five hundred United States Marines are the first American land combat forces committed during the Vietnam War. πŸ’£ The escalation of the war was well underway at that point. It would last for another decade and was pretty tragic for all parties involved.

Taking a well running but old hybrid bus 🚍 to work today. I really like it when they run the hybrid buses on the express route as they ride really smoothly in highway speed driving πŸš₯ especially when they slow at the traffic lights. It’s not a hard stop β›” like with the normal air brakes. Looking forward to seeing more electric buses in the future.

Today will have a chance of light rain, mainly after 5pm. Mostly cloudy 🌞, with a high of 47 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 22nd. Today in 1857, Supreme Court of the United States rules in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case. 🏫150 years later the Republicans still talk about it and Democrats just point out what a terrible decision it was in the context of slavery, that particular institution that lead to a war. Tomorrow I plan to hike out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐸 bright and early. β˜€ Then organize my camping gear. πŸ•Then maybe go to Schodack Island State Park and finally buy groceries at Aldis in the evening πŸ› and wash my truck 🧽 and do some cleaning at home.

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 57. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming west in the morning. Don’t forget to set your clocks back, Sunday will fly by especially with such spring like weather. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees.

Sunday morning I am joining some people for a walk in the Albany Pine Bush. 🚢 I might go right after that up to Thacher Park for another walk, maybe wearing my muck boots so my feet don’t get totally soaked up there, although they aren’t all that great for any kind of hiking, but they do keep my feet dry. Then out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. I wonder if they are doing barbecue? πŸ” Might be nice enough for that.

🌹🌻🌼Only 13 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼 Less then two weeks until it’s officially the equinox and we can start thinking about mud 🐽 and nicer weather maybe.

Still Some Deeper Snow In Parts

March 5, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear at the freezing point in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. A pretty good evening for early March. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 7 am. 🌡️

This evening I pushed forward most of the code to make the new parts of the blog working. 💻 The aerial photo 📷 comparison component will be launched in the morning, check β˜‘ it out tomorrow.

I avoided going to the store for yet another day 🏬 but I’ll figure out how to make sue through Saturday. I want to eat up more at home so I can make it through the spring time money 💵 crunch with taxes and the big car insurance bill.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 29 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

In four weeks on April 2 the sun will be setting in the west (278Β°) at 7:23 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 32 minutes and 37 seconds later then tonight. April is definitely not that far away nor is trout fishing 🎣. I am thinking for an April trip I’ll go to Madison and Chenango County for a few days and camp β›Ί and fish. Probably not until the week after Easter due to my busy work schedule. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 53 and 22 degrees. A pretty typical day. March 5, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly sunny and 37 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. A pretty decent day for mid-March, didn’t mind my walk down to the Park and Ride at all. Crazy, fast driver again today, no waiting around today. πŸšƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 11 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

Feeling better this morning, πŸ‘ƒ my nose isn’t as plugged as it was and I’m not as achy. Maybe it’s just the better weather. 😎 If it’s Coronavirus, it’s pretty mild and not impacting me much. More likely it’s just an a ordinary rhinovirus. I should wash my hands better — after reading that book about butchering small livestock πŸ”ͺ I’ve learned how hard it is to clean one’s hands really well. πŸ™Œ I don’t know or maybe I just like the fact it’s not a session day so I can go for my walk, and the fresh air makes me feel heathy. The past few nights I’ve not been doing my evening walking or riding the bike, which means my jeans feel a bit tight with the extra calories I’m consuming at work. πŸ‘– It’s just tempting to have danish 🍩 with my coffee when I’m at work or finish off the pot of whatever I’ve cooked at home.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. Never got to the store last night, 🚽 but I found enough toilet paper for now and I opened up some cans for veggies. I think if I play around I can find enough things in the pantry so I won’t need to go to the store before Saturday. πŸ˜‹ If I had been responsible I would have gone shopping yesterday, but I was lazy and got busy working on the updating the blog code.πŸ’»

Blog renovations continue, and I think I’ve discovered another reason why my blog is slow at times — the redirects for the images and maps are written in a way that is slow. πŸ”€ I thought I had fixed that issue years ago, but I discovered another issue that is requiring the PHP interprator when it should be a simple redirect. That said, the new content uploader is almost done, as is the comparison mapper code. I am hoping to launch the updated code this weekend.

Today in 1970, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty goes into effect after ratification by 43 nations. πŸ’₯ In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declares a “bank holiday”, closing all U.S. banks and freezing all financial transactions.🏦

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, sunny, with a high near 40. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. Sounds like a nice weekend but the wind on Saturday might make it feel chilly. Still planning on staying in town this weekend, unpacking my camping gear from my truck — prepping for the upcoming camping season, and loading up a load of bottle and cans to take to the recycling center later in the month. β™» Once the cans, glass, and accumulated plastic bottles are to the recycling center, I should be ready for camping for the year with plenty of cold beer, fire, and nights in wilderness. πŸ•
