August 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Hardly a bummer during summer vacation. I’m hiking the Finger Lakes Trail this morning ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ, getting nice and hot and sweaty before going to the swimming pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ later. Two weeks to until the Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ. But you won’t think that today. Partly sunny and 87 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 69 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

Yeah, it doesn’t get much hotter in the Finger Lakes. ๐Ÿ’ฅ It’s a hot one for sure. But I’m enjoying my hike up past the Upper Reservoirs and Group Camp on Glen Falls and I might even hike as far west as Sugar Hill State Forest. One consideration with the heat though is I better not get to th pool too late lest thunderstorms โ›ˆ come rolling through and they close.

Absolutely stunningly beautiful day โ˜€ but it’s already hot.๐ŸŒก๏ธAlready quite hazy and the air conditioning in Big Red is pissing moisture like a cow pisses. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ’ฆBut it’s cool up here at the park ๐Ÿž and camping up on backbone. ๐Ÿ—ป Fixed my dash cam so hopefully I won’t be getting a ton of pictures of the sky today. ๐ŸŒž

Well I got a bit of a late start due to sleeping ๐Ÿ˜ด in as I as I ended up staying up late last night, laying back in the hammock after my walk to Foster Pond๐ŸŒŒ. Still can’t believe how many people were camping ๐Ÿ• up that way. Honestly, I don’t mind not having cell service at camp ๐Ÿ“ถ and having

Regardless, I made it to Watkins Glen by a little after 10am and was able to get parking by the pool ๐Ÿ…ฟ even during the pandemic.๐Ÿ‘พ I was worried they’d be limiting parking and it would be closed if I got there after 10. Pools open at eleven in the Finger Lakes. I have my bandana on and are flipping it up as necessary as a mask. ๐Ÿ˜ท I’m staying out of the gorge as I think that would more difficult to maintain social distancing there. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธBought some crackers and cheese ๐Ÿง€ to snack on for lunch.

I really wanted to get goggles as my old ones broke and needed to be replaced so my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ don’t get irritated by the chlorine.๐Ÿ‘๏ธโ€๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ But after trying two stores they’re gone for the year. It might be 90 degrees out but all they’re selling is Halloween Candy ๐Ÿฌ and Thanksgiving Turkey. ๐Ÿฆƒ

Today will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 10am. That’s a cooker for the Finger Lakes. ๐ŸŒก๏ธPeople must be roasting back in Albany. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

This afternoon I plan to spend most of my time at the pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then get ice cream ๐Ÿฆat Glen Dairy Bar and groceries at Tops. Then I’ll sit at Clute Park and fish ๐Ÿ  and watch as the sun starts to drop. ๐ŸŒ‡

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 63ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:25 pm. Not sure if I’ll hike back to Foster Pond this evening ๐ŸŒƒ but I will probably spend some time at Clute Park fishing ๐ŸŽฃ before heading back to camp. At sunset, look for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Saturday may not be the greatest day ever. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 75 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

August 9, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 72 degrees at Foster Pond. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees. Nice starry night ๐ŸŒƒ at least at times. Crickets are cricketing, cows are mooing with occasional hoots of an owl and the blood curling sound of a coyote. ๐Ÿฆ‰

Didn’t get kayaking ๐Ÿ›ถ today but that’s fine, I ended up doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– and hiking, taking in the vast landscapes of the grass lands known as the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐Ÿ–ผ Sometimes I like days when I don’t have to drive or take things down or secured for heading out of camp. Read a bunch of Gebe Brown’s book ๐Ÿ“™ on Regentative Agriculture. While he is a shameless promoter of doing things his “new way” on his farm, he does have some interesting insights into the land much like Joel Saltin. Do I agree hundred ๐Ÿ’ฏ percent with both of them? No but it’s interesting to hear their voice – same reason for trying to listen and be an informed person.

Hiking a bunch of Interloken Trail today was nice ๐Ÿšถ and it’s been dry enough lately that the trail wasn’t too mucky. Often the shallow soils of the Hector Backbone mean lots of mud. ๐Ÿ‘ข Saw and heard lots of cows ๐Ÿฎ and the ponds are small but nice. One of these days I’m going to have to do some fishing in some of them. ๐ŸŽฃ

I have a bunch more pictures to upload to the blog โคด๏ธ but they’ll have to wait until tomorrow ๐Ÿ“ธ when I have a more reliable internet connection down in the village. My uploader works poorly on a bad connection. It’s quite pretty in the Finger Lakes and I’m really digging my new camera phone and being able to post more things close to live. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

This evening I hiked down to Foster Pond which is about a mile from camp ๐Ÿšถ but I was a nice walk. Really didn’t need my flashlight much ๐Ÿ”ฆ, I know the area pretty well and I always enjoy a good night hike. I did carry a flashlight mostly for safety on the road so any approaching cars could spot me early on. I am surprised how many people are camping ๐Ÿ• up by Foster Pond, usually it’s quiet on weeknights. I wonder if the folks frogging ๐Ÿธ got some to eat this evening. Certainly a lot of frogs on the lake but none real big. I’m actually glad I’m a bit farther away from Foster Pond than usual with it being so busy this week.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10pm. West wind around 7 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1955.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 64% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:25 pm. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:38 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:09 am in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 7 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:48 am with sun in the east-northeast (74ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

The plan for tomorrow is get a relatively early start โ˜• and do some hiking in the Upper Gorge Trail above the main park and then swim ๐ŸŠ at the Watkins Glen Park Pool. Also need to buy some food and ice – I’m very low, and then maybe fish ๐ŸŽฃ and take in the sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ or at least the evening at Clute Park.

In four weeks on September 6 the sun will be setting in the west (279ยฐ) at 7:32 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 21 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 72 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 91 degrees was set back in 2018.

Looking ahead, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 6 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 7 weeks, Last Sunset After 6:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 8 weeks, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 12 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 17 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 17 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 4 months, Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ is in 21 weeks, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 5 months and Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 27 weeks.

August 9, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Six weeks to Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ . Sunny and 71 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. Tree๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees.

Went for a walk ๐Ÿšถ again this morning on the Interlaken Trail and to Foster Pond. Definitely a nice morning, ๐ŸŒž lots of sun and wildflowers. ๐ŸŒปHad a nice pan of corned beef hash and cheese for breakfast. ๐Ÿณ Some eggs ๐Ÿฅš would be nice but I’ll have to get them today.

Wildflowers are definitely better this time of year ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ compared to earlier in the summer when I often take my vacation. It just makes my vacation a little more enjoyable seeing the road sides in bloom, the butterflies and bees. And yes, all that field corn ๐ŸŒฝ is getting tall.

Been quite busy up here ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ง, with so many things closed during the pandemic based on the number of cars ๐Ÿš˜ I’ve seen on the road. Fortunately, my campsite is quite remote and quiet ๐Ÿคซ so nobody is bothering me. Seen more equestrians ๐Ÿด than normal – in part because the Upper Assembly Area is closed at Sugar Hill. ๐Ÿ”

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 4pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2001.

Kind of breezy up here on the backbone ๐Ÿ—ป but I’m hoping the breeze will die down later and I can get out on Seneca Lake and the Montour Canal later. ๐Ÿ›ถ I’m excited about all the wildlife I might see there. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿข๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸŸ I just don’t want to go on Seneca Lake if it’s at all breezy ๐Ÿšฃ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ because it’s a big lake and can be very choppy. ๐ŸŒŠ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:13 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:46 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:26 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 68 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1955.

Been reading ๐Ÿ“– more of the Real Goods Solar Living Handbook. Half marketing catalog, half pseudo green living for rich folk, it sure seems like it’s gotten real dated fast. ๐ŸŒŽ Still an interesting read even if it’s more ideological and about marketing over-priced organic crap and green products for the landfill ๐Ÿ—‘ then practical realities of providing for one’s self and obeying the laws of nature.

I was noticing how much of the forest along Potomac Road was ash trees. ๐ŸŒณIt’s only a matter of time before much of the forest is going to be dying than gone. I see they have an Emerald Ash Boerer trap on the road to detect the invaders but I doubt they’ll treat all of the trees. Already as little as 50 miles south of here in Wellsboro you can see the devestation of the forests from EAB. ๐Ÿ› Forests are always in a state of decline – thats entropy – but they’re always changing with the land and introduced species.

One week from now I’ll be taking down camp and heading back to Albany. ๐Ÿก Or at least heading closer to that direction. But there is a lot more reading ๐Ÿ“–, hiking ๐Ÿšถ and paddling to do before then. Vacation really is just beginning – today is my first full day in the Finger Lakes.

I am still thinking I want to go the way I came ๐Ÿค” although I would want to avoid that rough seasonal use only road. If it’s really nice a week from Sunday I might overnight at Cherry Ridge ๐Ÿ’ and then head back home through Madison County. I like seeing the rough dairy country. ๐Ÿฎ The hills, the cows, the rundown shacks and hollows. ๐Ÿ—ป

I really like the wild country ๐Ÿ and wish I could live out here full time. Somehow I like it even better than the Adirondacks. Redneck country life is fun, even if at times it’s dirty and smelly. ๐Ÿ’ฉ But alas I’m making good money at my job ๐Ÿ’ต and are able to save a lot of it for a better tomorrow. It’s nice having some professional success in life and knowing it will lead to a better tomorrow, especially as I try to live frugally as possible. Some days I’ll live in a small town, have land and be able to listen ๐Ÿ‘‚ to the moos of cattle full time. ๐Ÿ„

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ when the sun will be setting at 7:06 pm with dusk at 7:34 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 79 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 71 degrees. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1946.

August 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly cloudy and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒฅ๏ธCalm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. After a quite cloudy morning it’s clearing out a bit.

Today I’m working on getting packed for my trip out to the Finger Lakes. โ›บ I was thinking originally about leaving tomorrow before work but I think I will actually go after work. It looks like it’s going to be pretty cloudy and icky tomorrow actually. I would work remotely from camp tomorrow but I don’t want to work in the rain if I can and I’ll avoid it. I actually have quite a bit of stuff to do tomorrow.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 79 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 24th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 10am. West wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1900.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-6.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:31 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:10 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 8:40 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:20 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 21 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 62 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm. Light northwest wind. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies. It was sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1994.

I realize cleaning up my blog yesterday I accidentally deleted the code that makes the charts display so it’s been noticed but I don’t know if there’s been no charts on the blog today. ๐Ÿ“ I also fix some other mistakes and issues with the blog. I don’t know if I can go to the library to update the blog out there but I won’t be able to use my phone because because it probably is closed through the Coronavirus. that’s it still good to get away and I shouldn’t have to work next week because I actually had the really the days off.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

After Friday it should be a pretty nice weekend. โ˜บ But I’m still thinking I’ll probably leave Friday as that breaks up the trip to the Finger Lakes and gives me more chances to stop. ๐Ÿš˜ I’m thinking of taking the mid state route this time down NY 13 through Cortland and Ithaca this time, maybe stopping at a few parks and scenic visits. ๐Ÿž I’m not totally set on the route yet.

Hot but nice morning

August 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a west-southwest breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

Sitting out back looking up at the stars โœจ, listening to the Chimes of Freedom as the moon ๐ŸŽ‘ rises. It’s a pretty nice evening after what was a rather crazy weather day โ›ˆ๏ธ which kind of roared all around the area barely touched me in Delmar. I went out for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ earlier then normal and there was a ton of people out about. ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ญ I normally don’t see a lot of people when I walk at nine o’clock.

I do like the very aggressive blue light filter on my new phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ and many of the features that come with having a much more modern phone. It does use quite bit more data but I have a decent data package ๐Ÿ“ฆ so it’s not a big deal. The more modern versions of Android has a lot of small improvements but nice ones.

For tonight it will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 64 degrees at 4am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 9pm. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1972.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 97% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:02 am, followed by dawn at 5:20 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:52 am in the east-northeast (66ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 11 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:31 am with sun in the east-northeast (72ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 40 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 17 seconds over last night.

I asked about taking next week off ๐Ÿ–๏ธand that seems increasingly likely. I’m not sure if I’ll get all week off but I can remote work for anything that comes up. ๐Ÿ“ฑ My new phone is pretty amazing and I can do a lot of my work stuff on, especially capable for only sixty bucks. That said I’ll pack the work laptop and if I need to work at the library Wi-Fi ๐Ÿ“ถit will work fine.

I’m not sure how nice the weather is going to be next week, ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธbut the Finger Lakes will be a nice change of pace. If it’s wet and stormy some days I’ll just hang out in camp. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ I have a bunch of library books to read ๐Ÿ“– and I really want some nice quiet days away from it all and the Finger Lakes will be a good change from the Adirondacks. Maybe I can’t block off all work activities on vacation ๐Ÿ”‡ – I am a supervisor now – but I’m hoping for a few days unlike earlier in the summer when I spent most of my days working from camp. ๐Ÿ’ป

Oil change is done, so much easier to just pony up the bucks ๐Ÿ›ข but the local shop was a lot more expensive than going to the dealer but when you consider the cost of gas it might make sense going forward at least while I’m working remotely. ๐Ÿ”ง Next oil change who knows. Of course if I decide to go carless next year maybe they’re won’t be visits to the repair shop or all the other expenses of motoring. ๐Ÿ

It was unusual riding the bus ๐Ÿš after so much time motoring and working from home. It’s just unusual with back door boarding and no bus fares. ๐ŸŽŸ You don’t really get to see the driver. It seems so impersonal. I was the only person on the bus but I wasn’t riding at a peak time. At some point things will return back to normal but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. ๐ŸšŒ I’ve been told remote work will continue through the end of the year.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 26th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 8am. Southwest wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1955.

Sounds like tomorrow is going to be quite muggy again. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ I do want to get to the library and work down there for a while tomorrow. ๐Ÿ“ง While I don’t expect many very data intensive work tasks there I do want to get some new photos and content on the blog tomorrow. Later on in the evening I’m going to John Wolcott house ๐Ÿก and maybe pick up some supplies at the store ๐Ÿฌ.

I am excited about my new phone and the new picture uploader I wrote. ๐Ÿ–ผ I’ll finally be able to upload high resolution photos as I travel right from my phone wherever I have reception and tell my story better. ๐Ÿ“ธ Instagram is fine but the pictures are kind of low resolution and crappy.

In four weeks on September 1 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (282ยฐ) at 7:29 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 42 minutes and 24 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 51 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 57 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1953. Can you believe four weeks until September?

Looking ahead, 4 weeks until September and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 13 weeks.

Mouse and Baldhead Mountains

August 4, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Rain showers and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜”There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 pm.

I dropped my truck off for the oil change ๐Ÿ›ข and walked home. ๐Ÿšถ A nice walk not raining too hard but everything is kind of damp and cloudy today but at least it not hot. So no complaints there. I’ll either walk down or take a bus ๐Ÿš down to pick up the truck during my break or lunch. I’m a salary employee once again so I guess it doesn’t matter all that much. I can always work late to finish up on work. ๐Ÿ’ผ

Did I misplace my new flash drive ๐Ÿ’พagain? Darn. I need that for work. I’ll find it. I’m sure it’s around here somewhere. I do really like my new phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ despite some of the minor flaws I discovered last night and it’s less than pocket and hand friendly size. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Today will be tropical storm conditions possible. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2pm, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒ€ High of 76 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 71 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1955.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-6.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:33 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (288ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:13 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 8:43 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. Blustery, ๐ŸŒฌ with a stiff breeze at 29 mph the west with gusts up to 40mph. Today will have 14 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 17 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will continue to have tropical storm conditions possible. Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 11pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11pm and 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Chance of precipitation is 80%. I just got to figure out how many of those days I’ll be working – I want some days to swim ๐ŸŠ at Watkins Glen State Park ๐Ÿž and some time to kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ. With social distancing though I am going to avoid the parks in favor of more hiking in remote woods ๐ŸŒฒand kayaking.

Looking ahead, there are 13 weeks until Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

Paddling through Pond Lilies

July 23, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 70 degrees in Speculator, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 61 degrees.

I had some tuna salad for dinner ๐Ÿฒ then I had a small fire and laid back in the hammock. ๐Ÿ”ฅ A very starry night. โœจ Reading ๐Ÿ“– that old Kerner Commission report is fascinating. I wonder if I can get a paper copy at the library to read more carefully. Well illustrated with photos and graphics too.

Stayed in camp โ›บ and worked from here. Not much rain, just a few showers. I took everything down planning to head into town and because I didn’t want my gear to get wet but they turned out to be a non issue. No bugs so that was nice. Exploring Old NY 8B on foot was interesting, had to have been quite the road back in the day. Austin Falls was pretty first time I’ve been there. ๐Ÿ“ท Uploading pictures tomorrow. That campsite at Robb Creek Mill ruins looks really pretty but I didn’t get a good look as somebody had their camping gear set up but wasn’t there. I think that’s the site where Robert Garrow murdered those campers. ๐Ÿ€ I’m just hoping I didn’t brush any poison ivy along the river, it’s thick along Old Route 8B.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10pm. North wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon with 13% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west (278ยฐ) at an altitude of 7ยฐ from the horizon, some 228,308 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by January 12th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the west-northwest (285ยฐ) at 10:41 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 3. The darkest hour is at 1:04 am, followed by dawn at 5:05 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:39 am in the east-northeast (61ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 59 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:20 am with sun in the east-northeast (68ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 56 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 27th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8am. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1941.

As I got a big project in for tomorrow I’ll be working all day in Speculator probably at the park in the morning by Lake Pleasant for number ๐Ÿ”ข crunching then down to the library for internet research in the afternoon. ๐Ÿ“ถ Then I think I’m going to go to Piseco-Powley Road Friday and Saturday nights and spend most of Saturday at the Potholers. Then come home on Sunday. ๐Ÿก Going to continue to be extremely hot next week but I feel like I should work from home at least every other week to save expenses of travel. โ›ฝ Gas is cheap but I’m still doing a lot of miles overall and ice and food adds up when you are buying it for camping.

In four weeks on August 20 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) at 7:52 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 54 seconds earlier then tonight. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1937.

Looking ahead, I’m going to sleep. ๐Ÿ›Œ Good night.
