The weekend forecast keeps trending to rain 🌦️

Use it or loose it as it sometimes come down to vacation. It’s a three day weekend beyond the two I’m taking off. The solitude time away from the internet and radio news will be nice even if more of the weekend will be spent under the tarp by the heater then out swimming 🏊.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly cloudy β›… and 57 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. 🚢 There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am. Still looks pretty wet to the west.

Out walking 🚢 this morning, I am almost packed for camping πŸ•, though I am waiting to load my kayak πŸ›Ά as I don’t want it to fill with rain. While I need to unpack the Cream of Wheat 🌾 I’m thinking that will be breakfast πŸ₯£ with some blueberries. Shower 🚿, double check my list πŸ“ƒ and then hit the road around 8:30 – 9 o’clock. I want to get more fresh food 🍏 on the way up and some sparklers πŸŽ‡.

Today will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 11th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11am. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1988.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.7Β° from the due south horizon (-0.1Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:53 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 25 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:56 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy πŸŒƒ with a low of 54 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1961.

On this day in 1967, The People’s Republic of China tests its first hydrogen bomb 🐼/strong>πΈ° . It would be one of the world’s few powers with access to the devestatingly powerful hydrogen bombs.

As I was noting, the weekend looks wet. 😞 Friday, howers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 70. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Saturday, showers, likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. High near 67. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. . Maximum dew point of 61 at 11am. Sunday, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10am. Juneteenth, there is a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

One month πŸ“… from now will be Cow Appreciation Day πŸ‚ when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. The average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.

I Can Help You Make a Map

Geographic Information Services (GIS)MapsCartography πŸ—Ί

I am an amateur cartographer who designs maps and does a wide variety geospatial analysis using free and open-source geographic information software (GIS) and public sources of data to design quality maps, graphs, charts and datasets. I am looking for new and interesting projects to improve my skills, make connections and expand my portfolio.

Are you looking for my personal blog with it’s hiking, camping and outdoor recreation maps, along with a variety of charts, photos, and stories? Please visit andyarthur.org.

Mapping Avaliable

  • Tax/Property Mapping
  • High Resolution Aerial Photography
  • Recreational Maps – Hunting, Camping, Hiking
  • Georeference addresses using State Address Mapping service, plot them on a map
  • Wetlands, Topographic Contours, Land Cover
  • Compare historical aerial photos or maps to current photography
  • Web mapping using leaflet (HTML/Javascript file to embed on a website or use at home)

Example maps can found below.

Services Available

  • A list of property owners within 1,000 feet of a proposed development
  • How many cars per day pass a business?
  • How many people who live within 5 miles of a business or park?
  • How many African Americans and Hispanics live within 10 miles of Albany Pine Bush?
  • What are wealthiest election districts?
  • How many people ride public transit in a neighborhood?
  • How much of an area is wetland or farm field?
  • How big an interchange?
  • What is the average slope and elevation of an area or trail?

Example data can found below.

Pricing and Cost

For most projects, there is no fee. I am looking for experience, references, mentors and connections in the geospatial community.

If you have a large project, let’s talk about it. I might be willing to do it for free, if it’s something really interesting
or important like fighting suburban sprawl and pollution. I don’t a business or taxes set up, so I can’t really charge at this point.

How to get started?

Please send me an email describing the mapping or data project in as much detail as possible.

My email is andy@andyarthur.org

Data Avaliable

  • US Census – 2019 American Community Survey, 2020 US Census
  • NYS Tax and Assessment Rolls (2020)
  • NYSDOT Traffic Counts and Road Data
  • Historical Aerial Photography (primarily 1952, but earlier and later exist)
  • ArcGIS REST/Services and WMS Services from state and local agencies
  • LiDAR Elevation Profiles
  • USGS Topographic Maps, historic and modern – with overlays if requested
  • Data Repositories like CUGIR, DataNY.gov and NYSGIS
  • Recreation data from NYSDEC

Software Used

  • Quantum GIS (QGIS) including 3D Mapping
  • Geodata Abstraction Library (GDAL, ogr2ogr)
  • Python, including the data-science libraries PANDAS and GeoPANDAS
  • LeafletJS Web Mapping Services

Geographies Avaliable

  • Primary Capital Region and also much of New York State, also some for Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia
  • State, county, municipal, school districts – Most data sets
  • Parks, highways, buffer (distance to) – Most data sets
  • Election districts – Roughly 75% of NYS counties
  • Census Tract or Blockgroup – 2019 American Community Survey
  • Tabulation Block – 2020 US Census

Are printed maps avaliable at this time?

Not currently. I can send you a file based on your specifications to print at your local print shop.

How long do mapping projects take?

Depends on complexity of the project. Many projects only take minutes, however if a project requires georeferencing, data cleaning, or custom shapes or layouts, it might take significantly longer. More revisions lead to better quality output.

Do you make maps professionally?

No! This is just a hobby. But I’m interested in expanding my skills. I do a lot of mapping for my blog and in support of community organizations like Save the Pine Bush.

Are my maps of good quality?

Thats for you to decide. I don’t have formal education in map making, and I don’t have professional tools. But do take a look at the work I’ve done below.

Kayaking Big Pond

Big Pond is one of the two larger ponds in the Catskills accessible to the public. Located in the Western Catskills, near Alder Pond, it has eight paddle in or hike in tent sites, and some pretty views.

Seneca Rocks, WV

I paddled in on August 17, 2010. These are the pictures I took paddling around the lake.

Night is Creeping Up on Me. I didn’t realize how quickly it got late at Big Pond, and I had even started dinner. To make matters worst, my white-gas lantern wouldn’t start, so I had to do everything by flash light.

Inholding. While most of Big Pond is part of the Middle Mountain Wild Forest, about 200 feet of shore line is privately owned. The folks in the cabin where really friendly when they stopped by in their electric pontoon boat, but it did kind of wreck the scenic view especially from where I was camping.

July 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 78 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. Still pretty warm in my bedroom tonight but not as muggy as last night.

Kind of an odd forth of July this year πŸŽ‡ to spend the evening home. A lot of people lit fireworks though off in town and there was a lot I could see looking out to the mountains this evening. Probably saw more that what I would have seen camping up in Moose River Plains but it gets pretty crazy up there 😜 come the forth of July. I have a bunch of sparklers and fountains but I’m saving then for a future trip and or New Years Eve 2021.

I did some fishing 🎣 at Lawson Lake but didn’t catch anything. Nice down by the lake, sitting on the dock with my feet in the water πŸ’¦ . I kind of wish though I had a Vermont fishing license for the week but I have plenty of other things to eat and pass the time.

Had a nice outside barbecue with the folks. πŸ”πŸŸ It was good to see them its been a few weeks. 🐢 I hear they are getting a puppy. Their neighbors were having a big party. As I’ve said before, I’ve always thought their neighbors were a bit too close 🐽 because I’m more of a wilderness person.

I have started to pack gear and will be heading out to Vermont πŸš™ for the forseeable future until the heat breaks or I get tired of camping. I can spend up to 14 days camping in the National Forest but I bet I will tire if it before then. β›Ί I am working Ali next week remotely but I expect my evenings to vw free to hit a swimming hole 🏊 or maybe even Grout Pond. Not bringing my kayak this time as I’m going to be busy with work and it’s a pain to take it on and off so I can get solar to keep the battery πŸ”‹ bank full.

With the heat and probably sleeping fairly undressed I woke up to bad jock itch this morning. πŸ† Super itchy hot sticky balls are no fun. I know what your thinking gross. That said athlete’s foot cream, the cheap mega bottle 🍢 at Wally World works good. I think with the heat and humidity, especially when I’m home I need to plan on daily showers and changing my underwear regularly. I think in the morning I’ll stop at Wally World and get another mega container if athletes foot cream πŸ‘£and make sure I keep my privates well coated when I camp and wear clean socks to bed. πŸ‘Ÿ Fortunately, itchy privates doesn’t make you subject to the Vermont quarantine order. I expect the cream to continue to work well.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 11pm. Light west wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1982.

Tonight will have the Full 🌝 , Buck 🦌 Moon. At 11 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (150Β°) at an altitude of 18Β° from the horizon, some 237,007 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by December 31st. Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί . The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 4:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:24 am in the east-northeast (57Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 26 seconds. Sunrise is 37 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:07 am with sun in the east-northeast (64Β°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 47 minutes of darkness, an increase of 53 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 89 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6pm. West wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1919. Honestly, I think that will be quite pleasant in Vermont.

In four weeks on August 1 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (295Β°) at 8:15 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 20 minutes and 59 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 85 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 62 degrees. The record high of 101 degrees was set back in 1933.

Looking ahead,

Near Dusk

July 2, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy, muggy and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 66 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. πŸ˜“

It was a hot day, especially when I was working down at the library. 😰 The internet is fast there and I was able to watch a movie while I worked but it sure was hot. I got home and worked by the fan for a while and then a pretty good thunderstorm ⚑ came through.

Later on I went to Walmart and got sparklers ✨ and finally some Bluetooth headphones 🎧. I haven’t had a good set of reliable headphones since the start of the pandemic and I like to listen to podcasts and music while I work and when I go out for walks 🚢. I also got some apple juice 🍏 and some canned food 🍲 to use up at camp when I head out to Vermont on Sunday.

After that I went down to the Henry Hudson Park β›² and sat down there with a library book and did some reading πŸ“–. Spent a little time fishing 🎣 and then headed home for my evening walk 🚢.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Partly cloudy 🌀, with a low of 69 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10pm. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1978.

Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί The Buck 🦌 Moon is on Saturday, July 4. The darkest hour is at 1:00 am, followed by dawn at 4:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:23 am in the east-northeast (57Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 26 seconds. Sunrise is 33 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:06 am with sun in the east-northeast (64Β°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, an increase of 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10am. Partly sunny , with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1911.

Tomorrow I’m going to watch the weather ⚑ and take it step by step but I do want to do some cleaning 🏠and then get some food for camping. I am concerned about keeping food cold so I’m going to try to get more dry goods. I am leaning towards a hike somewhere in Rensselaer County and then shopping at Aldi. πŸ”Ž John Wolcott has been asking me to come over for some time now, I’ll have to decide but I think I should continue on the project before it’s too late.

In four weeks on July 30 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (296Β°) at 8:17 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 19 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1933.

The Flow

July 1, 2020 Night

Good evening! Clear and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. πŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. A bit sticky but that’s to be expected for the first day of July.

Weather wise I wouldn’t call it a banner day for starting off July alrgoufgt it is clear now but it was raining on and off all day. β˜” It even started to rain when I went down to the library to work on the park bench. πŸ’» I think it was fine to sit in the bench, it was outside and there was nobody too close. I miss walking 🚢 down to the library after work. I also went for my evening walk. It’s a pretty nice evening. Been watching some of the Traplines and Inlines YouTube channel out back. 🎦

Working down at the library Monday and Tuesday with the laptop and fan plugged in πŸ”Œ and forgetting about the inverter being left on meant my battery bank πŸ”‹ is a bit worn down although there was some sun to charge it today but not a lot. I’m hoping tomorrow with the sun plus driving I’ll get my battery bank fully charged.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 3rd. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10pm. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1978.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon with 89% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the south (176Β°) at an altitude of 29Β° from the horizon, some 229,354 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by December 22nd. Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί The Buck 🦌 Moon is on Saturday, July 4. The darkest hour is at 1:00 am, followed by dawn at 4:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:22 am in the east-northeast (57Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is 32 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:05 am with sun in the east-northeast (64Β°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 45 minutes of darkness, an increase of 41 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Mostly sunny and hot 🌞, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 12pm. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1966.

So tomorrow is going to be a hot one. 😰 I have a big project for work and I’ll probably work down at the library for a while then down to the Henry Hudson Park and sit down by the river. I want to get some Sparklers ✨ at Walmart and a few other supplies, especially Bluetooth headphones.

Friday is a holiday at work and I’m thinking of doing some hiking assuming it’s not too stormy. 🚢 Saturday is Independence Day and I’m thinking that looks like a good day to spend out fishing and then maybe going out to see the folks house. 🎣Then Sunday, I’m thinking about heading out to Vermont and camping and working from there until the heat wave breaks 🌊 sometime in the future. Nothing is set in stone but it seems like a good plan.

I like the idea of Vermont πŸ’‘as I can set up camp and work from there all week. Once concern I do have is that I might not be real close to a general store for ice and that’s important with it being so hot. I guess I can avoid things that have to be cool but I want cold drinks when camping. Plus the sites with the best solar power are going to be less nice in the sun. β˜€ Maybe the whole idea isn’t set in marble yet.

In four weeks on July 29 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (296Β°) at 8:18 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 18 minutes and 15 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny, thunderstorm and temperatures between 92 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 62 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1894.

Tanker Ship Coming Down The Hudson

April 13, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. πŸŒƒ You can see the stars ✨ at times. Breezy, ️24 mph breeze from the west 🌬 with gusts up to 45 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. It’s quite mild out for mid April this evening but that wind is relentless, especially the gusts so I decided to head in after listening to the podcast I was listening to. πŸ‘‚ The dew point is 46 degrees. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 4 am. β˜ƒοΈ

For a while I sat out back watching the laser light firefly display I bought a few years back 🐝 much to the dismay of my parents who think it is tacky and causes air planes to crash. ✈ I think it’s fun, especially watching it sparkle in the bushes ✨ on a dark night. Doesn’t work so well in the city with the lights or if I have a lot of lights at camp. 🎧 I listened to two podcasts out back before I got tired 😴 of the cold wind out back.

I got another report to do for work today πŸ“ so I dived right in. Making good progress, with the limited distraction free mobile broadband internet for work I’m making a lot of progress on the report.

Didn’t go to the laundromat or grocery store today – I ended up taking a picture of the health insurance invoice and doing it online avoiding having to mail βœ‰ the paper work. Without needing to go to the post office, leaving home 🏑 wasn’t that pressing and I had no reason to leave home on this often rainy day πŸ’¦with the constant threat of high winds and downpours which didn’t happen in Delmar. Rain early and wind late here.

Rode the exercise bike 🚲 for an hour and then went for my evening walk 🚢 followed by sitting out back in my comfortable lawn chair watching the sunset and then virtual fireflies first flicker on the ground and then the trees. 🐝 It was nice until the wind really picked up.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 40 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1973.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter πŸŒ— Moon with 60% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:56 am, followed by dawn at 5:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:17 am in the east-northeast (77Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:55 am with sun in the east (83Β°). Tonight will have 10 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 51 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 31st. West wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. That wind will make it feel kind of chilly for sure. But it still might be a nice day to soak up the sun, β˜€ working out back. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 1968. 1.4 inches of snow fell back in 1950.❄

I might still go to Schodack Island State Park and work down by the river for a couple of hours 🚒 – my work laptop has a very strong battery πŸ”‹ and then go for a walk 🚢 and hit up Aldi’s before coming home. 🍏 At least that’s a plan. I do need to consider when I can get to the laundromat but that’s less pressing as I don’t have as many dirty clothes πŸ‘š as I work from home, rewearing jeans πŸ‘– multiple days with t shirts that don’t take up much space in the wash.

In four weeks on May 11 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (296Β°) at 8:06 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 27 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 65 and 47 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 68 and 46 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 1911.

With everything at PAUSE πŸ”œand it being another chilly April, it just kind of seems odd to think πŸ’ summer is not all that far away. While work has picked up, much of life has kind of stopped πŸ”΄ even as the seasons march on. Six weeks to Memorial Day and seven to June.🍹 But with everything shut down it almost seems not to matter. That said life goes on and I’m finding ways to adapt and make due.

Looking ahead, Arbor Day 🌳 is in 2 weeks, 8 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ is in 3 weeks, Flower Moon πŸŒ• is in 5 weeks, Memorial Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is in 6 weeks, June 🍹 is in 7 weeks and Average High is 80 πŸ– is in 10 weeks.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ¦…Only 39 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!πŸ¦…πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
