August 28, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Next Wednesday is Back to School Day ๐ŸŽ’. Partly cloudy and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees. Rain today, might want to bring an umbrella or rain coat to work today. โ˜” I’m running a little late to work ๐Ÿƒ as I misplaced my cell phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ taking down camp this morning. It fell into my camp chair and got folded up in there. Evidently I did find it but had to take the later bus to work, ๐Ÿš which is running on time but it’s hybrid engine is running very rough. The downsized turbo diesels on the old hybrid see a lot of wear due to all the time they spend relying on the turbo boost.

Today will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1948.

The sun will set at 7:35 pm with dusk around 8:05 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for possibleย thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then isolated showers between 1am and 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy fog after 11pm. ๐ŸŒง Low of 61 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 74 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1982.

Stayed out my parents house again. For a while last night it was loud as somebody was shooting a 30-06 or other loud or noisy deer rifle. ๐Ÿ”ซ I doubt they were 500 feet from a an occupied structure but who knows. Lots of shooting, more then a few rounds — although only a few a time. Probably whoever it was got a new deer rifle for hunting season, and was just trying it out — it sounded like a bolt action gun. At first I thought it was somebody dispatching a varmint like a coyote, or maybe some livestock they were harvesting. But I think whoever was shooting was just having a little fun. Of course, the other neighbors up the street couldn’t pass up on the fun, and they were doing some shooting. Kind of like a war-zone, but with rednecks having fun. ๐Ÿ‘น

Eight years ago today was Hurricane Irene. It’s funny, I happened to be in Utica for work when Hurricane Irene hit ๐ŸŒ€so while there was severe flooding – water poured through the roof of our office – it certainly wasn’t as bad as further east. I think there was discussion of whether or not we should close the office when there was water pouring through the 277 volt florescent fixtures through the ceiling. โšก Whitestown was pretty severely flooded though.๐Ÿ’ฆ It really made me think a lot about when I own land and a house having a property that is storm resistant – built away from waterways and steep slopes. Plus having a tractor ๐Ÿšœ with a box blade and a front end loader to fix roadways and other washouts. In Superstorm Sandy, I was Niagara Falls which only got a rain storm but not one that was so outrageous.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 57 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees.

Took Friday off for the long weekend. I am planning to head north in the morning, although I hope to do a lot of packing on Thursday night. I am not sure if I’m bringing the kayak, but I am definately leaning towards heading back up to Jessup River Road and trying to get that campsite I really like up there.๐Ÿ•

The exciter wire in my truck stopped working. That’s the wire that closes the battery relay and turns on the CB radio when I turn on the truck.๐Ÿ“ป Not sure what the issue is — I’m thinking I just pulled a wire loose from one of the connections when I pushed the button on the switch. Tomorrow night, before dark I’ll play with it using my meter.
51 years ago today, Mayor Richard J. Daley said his most famous quote on National Television ๐Ÿ“บ, probably the most famous gaffes of the 1960s: Gentlemen, let’s get the thing straight, once and for all. The policeman isn’t there to create disorder; the policeman is there to preserve disorder.” ๐Ÿ‘ฎ

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Back to School Day ๐ŸŽ’ when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:52 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot and humid weather with mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 89 and 68 degrees. Autumn was a bit late last year, at least in Albany. I don’t remember it being quite as warm in Syracuse, but I could be wrong. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1929.

Paddling Thru Cedar River

August 27, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ. We will be well into September at that point. Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees.

I stayed overnight at my parents house last night with the dog ๐Ÿถ out back. I forgot how noisy their cows are, bellowing morning and night. ๐Ÿฎ Rooster ๐Ÿ“ too. They don’t have the donkey anymore though it seems. It’s nice being back at my parents house, but I still prefer to be out in the wilderness camping, and I’m not crazy about driving back and forth to work.

Slept well though, ๐Ÿ˜ด as I took a sleeping pill and was asleep by 9:30 PM. I also got up bright and early, I had coffee on the camp stove by 6:30 AM. Cold but sunny this morning. Lately I’ve not been sleeping well — but this seemed to help.

I love the country life ๐Ÿšœ but high priced, high regulation New York is not for me. So I rent and save for now. My parents have way too much house and too little land and if I owned land I’d want to be able burn my own trash ๐Ÿ”ฅ and have enough land that livestock wouldn’t necessarily be right up against my house making noise and smelling like hog manure ๐Ÿทand I could shoot my guns without bothering people. ๐Ÿ”ซKind of like camping in the back country. I’m still so fascinated by Missouri and the south.

Driving in today I noticed that the transfer case was stuck in Auto 4×4 mode ๐Ÿ”˜the with Service 4 WD on dash but after restarting the truck it cleared out. I hope this isn’t an issue now that the mornings are colder and damper. If it is I’ll have to get it fixed. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ I just don’t want to have problems on my West Virginia trip. Maybe its something simple I can fix like that brake switch I replaced myself in the spring. Or maybe it will go away. Tonight I won’t leave the truck parked in Auto 4×4, in case the dew and cold and causing problems with the shift position sensor.

Ended up having to run home and get changed after I discovered that I had a stain on the shirt ๐Ÿ‘š I was wearing. Such a damn messy eater and I eat too much pasta. ๐ŸฒSoon most days though I’ll be wearing long sleeve shirts. Autumn๐Ÿ‚ is right around the corner. Looking forward to wearing my Carharrt vest again! I got my hunting license, I’m ready for Sunday.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 1st. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10am. South wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1948.

The sun will set at 7:37 pm with dusk around 8:06 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 58 at 4am. South wind around 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 75 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1982.

Today in 1859, Petroleum is discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania leading to the world’s first commercially successful oil well. โ›ฝ To this day, that town still smells like petroleum, and it floats in the creeks, but they produce much less oil today then at the peak around the turn of the century.โšซ That said, it’s really good quality crude and still used for some of the finest lubricants out there.

A picture perfect Labor Day Weekend to end out summer. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 57 at 7pm. Labor Day will have a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees.

I have to see about taking Friday off but I have to find coverage and need to get my mail plans done by then. โœ‰ I guess I could take off Friday and then come on a few hours on Friday if necessary or stay a little late on Thursday. I probably wouldn’t head out of town until Friday morning, just late enough to avoid the holiday traffic. ๐Ÿš™

I’m leaning towards heading back to Speculator Tree Farm and hiking back to some of the ponds ๐ŸŒฒin the West Canada Wilderness from the big open campsite I enjoy. But I could also do Pisceo-Powley Road or Kelley Stand Vermont. It would be nice to get away for one last week of summer when there still is a fair amount of light in the evening. โ›บ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ when the sun will be setting at 7:01 pm with dusk at 7:29 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, mostly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 82 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 72 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1942.

Kayaking Pass an Island

August 16, 2019 8 AM Update

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Two weeks to Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ. Cloudy, humid and 65 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees. I’m kind of dripping from the sweat ๐Ÿ˜ฐ walking down to the express bus. The skies will clear Sunday around 7 pm.

I went to bed early last night and got up early today ๐ŸŒ… thinking I would finish packing and then hit up the grocery store and then head to the Adirondacks after work. ๐Ÿ’ญ Looking at the forecast this morning I changed my mind as Saturday doesn’t look great up north so instead I think I will get up early tomorrow and head north.

That way I’ll only be gone three nights so I expect the ice will last and I won’t have to worry about moving my campsite after three nights. โ›บ I don’t expect a lot of people up north tomorrow being it expected to be cloudy and mid August when few people vacation. This way too I can head up on Saturday morning when traffic is light, not have to set up gear in the darkness or buy firewood. Money is a bit tight so everywhere I can save a few bucks it helps.

It will be four days at the potholers through Tuesday cooling off ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Should be nice to lay back on the hammock with a cold one and a book ๐Ÿ“™ and be off the grid for a few days. Have nice fires every night ๐Ÿ”ฅ, listen to music ๐ŸŽถ as loud as I want, maybe set up targets and shoot guns. ๐ŸŽฏ Basically just get away from it for a few days.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Partly sunny โ›… , with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 69 at 3pm. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1936.

The sun will set at 7:55 pm with dusk around 8:25 pm, which is one minute and 30 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 35 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 68 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1979.

Today in 1916, the Migratory Bird Treaty between Canada and the United States signed. ๐Ÿฆ It was designed to save Migratory Birds by giving them international protection for the first time by placing limits on hunting and other means of taking. Gotta buy your duck stamp if your hunting migratory birds.

In 1989, a solar flare from the Sun creates a geomagnetic storm that affects micro chips,โ˜€ leading to a halt of all trading on Toronto’s stock market. I notice with my display that I built in my bedroom, sometimes in humid weather I have a lot of errors, although in the winter I have less. Not sure if that’s humidity causing shorts and bad connections or if its the lack of shielding on the wires.

Also, in 1993, Debian Linux is announced, it would become the basis of many forms of Linux like Ubuntu Linux, ๐Ÿ’ป which is currently what I run on my home computer.

And in 1966, the House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who have aided the Viet Cong. ๐Ÿ‘บThe committee intends to introduce legislation making these activities illegal. Anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 72 at 1pm. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1913.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Partly sunny, โ˜€ with a high near 86. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 70 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

The plan is next weekend to stay in town. ๐Ÿก But this weekend I’ll head north. I might take the Friday off before Memorial Day Weekend, although it depends if I can get coverage for my clients at work. I also want to take some time off in September and October plus the week before Columbus Day off. Labor Day Weekend I was originally planning on Piseco-Powley Road, but maybe I’ll do what I did last year with that campsite I really like on Jessup River Road or maybe I’ll head back to Vermont. Depends on the forecast.๐Ÿ•

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ when the sun will be setting at 7:32 pm with dusk at 8:01 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 62 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1953.

Oily Shoreline

August 11, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Three weeks to the last Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ†. Sunny and 63 degrees at the Burnt-Rossman State Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Maybe even a bit more breezy here on the mountain ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 52 degrees. It’s actually warming up quite quickly this morning and the sun is nice on this mid August morning. Shocking to think how fast though summer is coming to a close.

I kind of slept in this morning as lately I’ve been not getting enough sleep. ๐Ÿ˜ด It’s such a pleasant morning and by the time I awoke I fell nice and refreshed. I do really love the wild country of the Northern Catskills and Schoharie County and this campsite is nice being a little more open and having cellphone service. Duck Pond is pretty on a nice morning like today and it’s nice to be away from it all for a while.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 10am. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

The sun will set at 8:04 pm with dusk around 8:35 pm, which is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 56 degrees at 1am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6pm. Southwest wind around 7 mph. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.

I should think about taking down camp in a bit. โ›บ So I can get out fishing ๐ŸŽฃ and on with my day. It’s going to be another busy week but at least I hope to try to get to bed at a reasonable hour this week so I don’t get so tired out by the end of the week. It’s nice Schoharie County for a while and see the open country when it seems like the rest of the world is closing in. ๐ŸŒŽ It’s nice to know the whole world isn’t like Albany

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 7:31 pm with dusk at 8:00 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 79 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.

Sailor's Warning

August 10, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 55 degrees at the Burnt-Rossman State Forest. โ˜” There is a west-northwest breeze occasionally reaching 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. A pretty nice evening maybe a bit cool but we are starting to get towards autumn and it’s expected to warm up more come Sunday.

Hiking Hunter Mountain was nice ๐Ÿ—ผ and there are some really great views from the tower. As I noted earlier, the restored old Rangers Cabin is amazing and the view is great. A lot of people there but the Spruce Horse Trail was relatively quiet. It’s a nice hike from that direction especially figuring I’m a bit out of shape these days as I’ve not been doing as much walking ๐Ÿšถ recently but I plan to do more in the coming weeks.

Then I enjoyed visiting Pratt Rock which despite spending so much time in the Northern Catskills โ›ฒ I had never visited. It’s a short but very steep and somewhat slippery – dangerous hike to the top but great views from the summit and the historic carvings are neat although the whole area is a bit shabby and could use some rehab and maybe some blazes on the trail and a hike map.

This morning I went out to breakfast ๐Ÿณ with the parents and didn’t have much packed so I didn’t get a real early start. I am a slow hiker and I spent a lot of time at Hunter Mountain overlook do by time I was off Pratt Rock it was after 7 pm with camp more than a half hour away so it was a bit of hurry to get up there but I got the campsite I wanted and had enough time to gather firewood before dark so it all worked out.

Tonight will have isolated showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 49 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 22nd. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

It was cloudy and sprinkling a bit when I set up camp but it’s cleared up a bit now. โœจ Fair number of stars although the moon is blocking some out with its light. ๐ŸŽ‘ Full moon isn’t that far off – next week. ๐ŸŒ• Having a beer or two ๐Ÿป and soon I’m going to retire to my truck for the night. ๐ŸŒƒ Didn’t do the hammock tonight because its a bit cool tonight and this site which was recently logged doesn’t have a lot of places to hang a hammock. I also wanted to keep camp simple as I want to sleep in tomorrow but have camp that’s relatively easy to take down so I have time to fish ๐Ÿ  before heading to Mine Kill to swim. ๐ŸŠ

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 89% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:13 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 6:00 am with the first light at 5:29 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 13th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6pm. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Might actually be a bit cool tomorrow at Mine Kill State Park. ๐ŸŠ Good though for hiking. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

In four weeks on September 7 the sun will be setting at 7:21 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 42 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1945.

If I had known how cloudy today would have been I’d probably stay home ๐Ÿก but I enjoyed Hunter and Pratt Rock regardless. Summer is rapidly fading away so I should maximize it before it’s gone. ๐Ÿ˜” It was kind of fun to drive through Greenville and Durham again but it kind of saddens me how much it’s changed in two decades and maybe how much I’ve changed. Every time I visit my old hometown I feel like Rip Van Winkle. ๐Ÿ‘ด The are so beautiful overlooking the hick town I grew up in. Unfortunately the world ๐ŸŒ of my childhood no longer exists. Maybe I should stop by the old Town Park and watch the ducks from the gazebo as I once did years ago at lunch.

I do like the small towns and the rural poor at least by the economic standards of the urban elite. I really like the dirty life, the hobby farmer in the trailer or rundown house. ๐Ÿก It’s so much better of a life than the surburbanite life with the vinyl siding and perfect chemical treated lawn. Poor people don’t waste as much as the comfortable surburbanite.

Looking ahead, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 2 weeks and Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 6 weeks.
