Camping in Green Mountains National Forest

Green Mountain National Forest Camping ๐Ÿ•

Here is a full-screen interactive map, that uses the official forest service maps as a backdrop. You will need to zoom in to see the individual roads.

In the Green Mountain National Forest there are a variety of back country roads, offering primitive roadside camping.

  • Campsites are free to use, and have no facilities except for a fire ring and a pull-off from the road, and sometimes a site reinforced with gravel.
  • As noted below, some campsites have additional facilities.
  • Don’t make a mess of campsites, pack out any garbage left over.
  • Burn only dead and down trees, don’t bring in wood from out of state.
  • You can camp up to 14 days per 30 day period in Green Mountain National Forest — no permits are required.

Here is a listing of the campsite coordinates in a spreadsheet (Green Mountain tab). Please note, these coordinates are not exact as they are drawn based on memory.

Please see also information on dispersed, roadside and back-country camping in New York State, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The below descriptions of camping areas from the Green Mountain National Forest’s webpage, General Forest Camping.

North Half of the Green Mountain National Forest

Note: You must zoom in to see individual roads on above interactive map. Campsite locations were added by hand-digitizing and are not exact.

Austin Brook Road: There are three easily accessible campsites by Austin Brook on Forest Road 25 in Warren. They are all within 0.25 mile of State Route 100.

Campsite 4

Bingo: Forest Road 42 in Rochester runs alongside a mountain stream; camping is allowed at designated sites only. These 10 campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of 10 people per site. Check the Bingo Brook bulletin board for designated site locations and other site limitations.

Downingville: There is one secluded site in a small clearing near a mountain stream on Forest Road 291 in Lincoln.

Fayโ€™s Meadow: There are a few sites in an open meadow in Forest Dale. Please do not drive on the meadow because a farmer mows the hay from it. There is a stream for wading and fishing at the north end of the meadow.

Goshen Brook Road: There are a few campsites in and around an open area just beyond the turnaround at the very end of Forest Road 67 in Ripton.

Kettle Brook: A small meadow site at the end of Furnace Brook Road in Pittsford.

Michigan Brook Road: Forest Road 35 in Pittsfield provides many camping opportunities in the woods and along Michigan Brook. The road is not recommended for low clearance vehicles.

New Haven River: There are a few campsites next to the New Haven River at Emily Proctor and Cooley Glen trailhead, on Forest Road 201 in Lincoln.

Field Camping at Romance Header Campsite

Romance Header: A large meadow campsite at the end of Forest Road 224 in Forest Dale. A stream lies to the southeast of the meadow.

Sparks Landing: There is one site in a small meadow on Forest Road 233 in Lincoln. There is good fishing in Sparks Brook, which lies just south of the meadow.

Steam Mill Clearing: There is a large open field on both sides of Forest Road 59 at the Skylight Pond Trailhead in Ripton.

Texas Falls Campsite

Texas Gap: These old fields and side roads on Forest Road 39 in Hancock offer many camping opportunities.

White River & Gulf Brook Roads: Secluded camping, open fields, and beautiful views are offered from the abundance of primitive campsites found along Forest Roads 55 & 101 in Granville.

South Half of the Green Mountain National Forest

Note: You must zoom in to see individual roads on above interactive map. Campsite locations were added by hand-digitizing and are not exact.

 Campfire

Branch Pond Road: Several sites on this road off of Kelley Stand offer good camping opportunities.

Making Breakfast at Camp

Forest Road 71: This forest road stretches from the old Somerset airfield to the Kelley Stand Road. Campsites can be found in various spots along the way, and along some of the forest roads leading off of Forest Road 71.

Untitled [Expires October 13 2024]

Forest Road 74: This forest road is a little less remote than other roadside camping opportunities. Off Vermont Route 9, it dead-ends a couple miles in. Campsites are found unevenly spaced along the way. This area fills up early as it’s one of most accessible.

Kelley Stand Road: Connects the towns of Arlington to West Wardsboro, traveling along an unpaved forest road. A handful of campsites are avaliable on this road, many of the sites along Roaring Brook are permanetly closed.

Morning

Old Job: Off Forest Road 30 there are a few camping opportunities; an open area along FR 30, and both an open field area and a site near Lake Brook at the end of FR 30.

Somerset Road Bridge

Somerset Airfield Campground is a small primitive campground along Forest Road 71. There is a pit-privy and fireplaces in this field camping area. Also popular is Castle Brook Road, near the Deerfield River. This area fills up early, and is known for rowdy crowds but is good if you have a big camper.

January 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Still only 38 years old. ๐ŸŽ‚ Not 40 yet. No need to rush that, as there is so much more to do. It’s a cold one. โ„ And not the kind you crack open unless your ice fishing on plywood today, because the ice is still pretty shallow on most lakes. Four weeks to Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Last night’s Wolf Moon was pretty nice, at least looking out my window at the cold landscape outside. Mostly sunny and 7 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is -14. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Thursday around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Yeah, it’s a cold morning. I guess that’s to be predicted this time of year. ๐Ÿ” We really haven’t had much cold this winter, so I guess it’s a good change. We got to have some cold to remember what the cold feels like. My apartment is nice and warm, well relatively speaking, as I turned up the thermostat a few degrees before the big chill, and honestly 7 degrees is nothing like the negative 15 we have some years. I think it got down to around 0 last night. We are though past the coldest time of year at least on average, although in recent years it seems like the cold comes later in the season. I will be very interested in seeing the updated 30-year climate normal ๐ŸŒกcome July 1st.

Decided to make to make a nice big pan of eggs up. ๐Ÿณ With ham, broccoli and Swiss cheese. I bought $76 worth of groceries, an unusually high amount for my weekly shop, so I should be set for all week. I do like those big 2-lb blocks of Swiss cheese I get at Wally World. ๐Ÿง€ I was thinking about going to Aldi’s this weekend but I needed to go out yesterday, and I wasn’t going to make a trip across the river just for groceries, even if Aldi’s is a good savings. ๐Ÿ› Walmart is better for bulk purchases though with more food and less plastic packaging. ๐ŸŽ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 19 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -14 at 7am; Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I am thinking about hiking out to Five Rivers, ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ as this morning is quite still but every once and a while a big gust of wind pops up ๐ŸŒฌ and makes me think twice about my plans. I think I will make a decision by 9 AM. I took a shower yesterday, ๐Ÿšฟ so with some clean underwear and socks ๐ŸงฆI should be ready to go. Just need to get the binoculars out of the truck and maybe pack a day sack with some water. Will definitely want gloves and a hat today though. I could drive out there, but I think I’d rather walk. I’ll probably talk about it ๐Ÿ’ฌ and decide to stay home as it’s cold. ๐Ÿ˜†

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-41ยฐ vs. 6/21). Getting close to dirty thirty, and you can actually feel the stronger sunshine this time of year as you walk outside. A six foot person will cast a 10.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:25 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (247ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:07 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:36 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:11 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 17 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 5. โ˜ƒ๏ธ There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 1 degree at 6am. Got to make sure to take the “S” off degrees. 14 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -6 at 5am; Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light north after midnight. In 2020, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1948.

Yesterday, despite getting off to a rough start, ๐Ÿ™ƒ including loosing my balance and falling flat on my face and feeling super itchy and congested, was great after I took a shower, got cleaned up and the antihistamines ๐Ÿ’Š got up to speed. I think that bright sunny morning and the cold got my mood up a lot and made me feel a lot better. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Got a bunch of groceries, got to the library and synced the blog, ๐Ÿ”ƒ and ran updates on the laptop ๐Ÿ’ป and then I’ve been working on finally porting the various parts of blog over to Gutenberg.

Yeah, I do use WordPress Internally on the Blog, โœ a piece of mass-produced widely used software. While I don’t like to drink out of the trough that everybody else has been defecating in, ๐Ÿ’ฉ WordPress has been a pretty stable piece of software with a large API that makes it’s easy to develop a custom front-end for. It’s also OpenSource, ๐Ÿ”“ which is the only kind of software use. Years ago I wrote my entire blog in PHP, then Perl then back to PHP, but it got to the point I didn’t like having to update and administer everything myself, and having access to the big API is nice. And it’s probably faster, more secure and better code base then anything I could write without a formal education in programming. Kind a big switch to move all the shortcodes over to blocks, but it’s good to learn the current API.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 7 weeks remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ It might be cold out there this morning ๐ŸŒฌ but there really is reason for hope with February just around the corner. Monday is the first, Tuesday is Ground Hog Day. Will he see his shadow? Gawd only knows, sing the Beach Boys. Goat farmers everywhere love the cover of Pet Sounds. A very experimental time in music.

As previously noted, next Saturday Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ when the sun will be setting at 5:15 pm with dusk at 5:45 pm. On that day in 2020, we had freezing rain and temperatures between 33 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 55 back in 1991.

Fire Tower

January 17, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday! โ›ช Kind of a cloudy gray morning. โ˜Four weeks to Valentines Day โค๏ธ . Clouds with a few snow showers and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a west-southwest breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I slept horribly last night ๐Ÿคช mainly because I watch a movie about Napster, the RIAA and the craziness that was the 1990s, tying myself up in a knot with the sheets my mid-evening. ๐Ÿ› I remember why I don’t have Internet at home and why I don’t like politics or things technology that much anymore. ๐Ÿ’ป Sure I do mapping and I have my computer that runs Linux, but I only use Open Source software, a very basic window manager — XFCE — and aren’t into all that commercial technology crap. ๐ŸŒMy smartphone is super basic, I think the only paid app on it is US Topo Maps which I use sometimes for hiking and was all of $6 back in the day.๐Ÿ“ฑ

Then I woke up at 4 AM with a toe that was beat red and swollen, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ with a great deal of pain. I’m not that much of a girly man but it was — super painful and swollen. Wasn’t sure what the issue was but it probably was my fault for not putting on fresh shocks before bed. I thought maybe I had an overgrown toe nail — I tried to find my toe nail clippers half awake but gave up. Once I took off my socks, and applied some anti-bacterial foot-spray the pain went away. I think it was just athlete’s foot because I didn’t change my socks being home all day yesterday. I am going to shower ๐Ÿšฟ today, then soak my foot and apply athlete’s foot cream around it. I did find the clippers and clipped the nail back on the toe in case that was the issue but I don’t think it is.๐Ÿ’‡

Then somebody knocked on my door at 9:45 AM, ๐Ÿšช not sure who it was but I super groggy and not in the mood to answer the door. Often I won’t answer the door if I don’t know who it is, just because I’m a bit paranoid and I figure if it’s important, they can text me, leave me a note, or give me a call and do voicemail. ๐Ÿ“ž I am really careful about screening my calls, lest it be a television reporter, a police officer, or anybody unpleasant to speak to like the 90% of all communications these days — SPAM artists.๐Ÿ—‘ Yes, you can stop sending me emails about guest posts on the blog. They don’t exist here. This is my personal blog, so it’s 100% Andy Arthur for good or bad. I am thinking it was the neighbor asking about the power bill I stuck in their mailbox — I think it might have been for the previous tenant. ๐Ÿ“ฌ I probably should have just written return to sender on it and stuck it in my mailbox, but the address was for the neighbor. Or stuck it in the paper trash. โ™ป

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers, mixing with rain after 10am, then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 26th. West wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1889. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

I wanted to go out to Five Rivers but with me still somewhat sore toe, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ the clouds and wind I’m not sure if today is the day. โ˜But I’ll bundle up later and do my evening walk. Maybe stay home and do some reading. ๐Ÿ“š I don’t think the toe issues is a big deal, but it was so awful for that hour or so last night when I was up in terrible pain. ๐Ÿ™„ I certainly pay enough for health insurance that if I need to slap down $25 get my toe checked, I’ll do it but I’m hopeful it good by later. I do need to order more books from the library – not difficult to do especially with the drive-through. Now that I have that hotspot mode on my phone, it’s particularly to browse for books online. ๐Ÿ’ป That said, I do miss walking down to the library and look forward to getting the cost of the more expensive phone plan off my books once things re-open.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:06 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 5:20 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (206ยฐ) at an altitude of 38ยฐ from the horizon, 247,838 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:56 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1957.

I’ve been trying to get Microsoft Windows running on my laptop ๐Ÿ–ฅ as I need it for work. I want to purge a lot of the spamwear on the machine and try to speed up windows.

Been doing some carpet cleaning with rubbing alcohol ๐Ÿงน which actually is quite effective after a suggestion I saw on the internet. But it does stink pand is probably toxic and very flammable. It does work great with a brush though, although I really do need to at some point get a carpet cleaning machine in here or something like that. I probably shouldn’t track so much mud in my apartment. That said, like everything in my inexpensive apartment, the carpet is starting to wear out.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 62 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ Cue Day by Day from the Godspell sound track. It’s going to get cold by the end of the month but at least we are creeping towards the days with higher sun angle. In four weeks, the average temperature will be 4 degrees above freezing and March won’t be that far around the corner. My meteorologist friend likes to point on Meteorological Spring happens on March 1st. I am just disappointed that I will have to wait until July 1st for the official climate normals to come out for the 1991-2020 period — I’m really fascinated to find out.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Valentines Day โค๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:26 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 36 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

Backlit Field

January 15, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Long weekend ahead but it’s Martin Luther King Jr weekend in the bleak of winter and it’s going to rain during the pandemic so don’t get so excited. Two weeks to my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ . Getting old you might say. Probably not wiser, but I haven’t burned my hand with dripping plastic in a few years. Maybe because I live in the city for now, less chance for making black smoke and injuries with fire.

Partly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… A little bit more sun right now for my talk then lately, but hardly a banner morning. But wait there is more — going to cold around my birthday but probably with more sun. Calm wind. So it make it feel fairly mild. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Honestly, right now a pretty nice morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. Seeing the sun โ˜€ is refreshing not that is expected to last. But it is promising to return for late January and be cold โ„. I expect an absolutely frigid February like has been the norm but the strengthening sun angle means any extreme cold and snow ๐ŸŒจ we get in late February won’t last.

Today will have patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 40 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Morning walk now, ๐Ÿšถand later it’s off to head downtown for paperwork and a meeting. I am a bit hesitant with the Corona ๐Ÿ‘พ and riding the bus, but I’ll mask up. ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐ŸšŒ I was surprised to see from that graph I posted last night that 1 in 20 Albany County residents so far has had COVID — it’s really been popping up a lot the past two months, although some has to do with testing. At least Albany County is still not in the yellow or orange zone. ๐Ÿšฆ I really can’t complain about the weather. At any rate it’s nice to get out of the apartment — the morning and evening walks are great but working from home seems so trapping at times, especially when it’s cold and I can’t be outside or in the wilderness. โ„ No more of this working and camping outside of Speculator at least until the springtime.

Yesterday I got to the store and bought the world’s biggest box of Bisquick and cereal. ๐ŸฅฃI try to buy in bulk to reduce the amount of trash because I don’t like going to the transfer station as it costs money and living in the city means fewer opportunities to burn things. ๐Ÿ”ฅ No more free paper recycling. โ™ป I think buying such a big box of Bisquick last time, and eating so many Bisquick biscuits like five years ago was why I stayed away from it. ๐Ÿฅž I guess there is also Bisquick pancakes and other things on the package I can make to use it up. I also fueled up Big Red โ›ฝ because my tank was low, and I wanted to have fuel in case shit gets real next week ๐Ÿ’ฃ and I need to evacuate. I don’t expect next week to be crazy, but there are some on the left who are sure it’s going to be nuts. ๐Ÿ‘Š Well I have my truck, and I’m working from home and I know plenty of places to hide out if necessary. ๐Ÿš— That said, I expect Inauguration Day to be boring, and I’ll watch it from home or maybe down at the library. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Really do need to cut down my bandwidth a bit to make it through the month. Too much streaming video, even though I have a so-called unlimited plan.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:04 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (223ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 242,654 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:54 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

I am watching the bandwidth I’ve been using with my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ over the past three weeks, and I think ๐Ÿค” I need to be careful about how much data I use. While I’m well below the 20 gb Hotspot limit I want to keep the unlimited mobile under the 60 gb for a month to avoid potentially triggering a teems of service review even if I think my usage is consistent, but I don’t have Wi-Fi at home and I use it for a lot of work video streaming and video meetings. ๐Ÿ“น But I really don’t need to watching hour long videos on my phone of manure drag lining as fascinating as that may be. ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿšœ ๐Ÿ’ฉ I can always download those kind of videos at the library and watch them on my laptop.๐Ÿ’ป I also don’t want to get to addicted to watching videos on my phone — one the pandemic is over or warmer weather comes back, I fully plan on going back to my cheaper phone plan without the hotspot or unlimited mobile data. I like walking down to the library or the park when I want to use the internet at night. Keeps me on a schedule, makes it so I’m not staying home all of the time.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 10pm, then rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 36 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 11th. Southeast wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly before 1pm. ๐ŸŒง High of 41 degrees at 12pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 7th. East wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light and variable. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

Well I could have dreamed of getting up to the Adirondacks this weekend, ๐Ÿ• but I knew that was unlikely with the normally lousy weather that is the norm this time of year. It’s going to be kind of wet, but I downloaded several videos and I have books to read too. ๐Ÿ“š I really should do more reading. I am probably going to go out to the folks house on Monday, but I’ll see what it’s like. I would be nice to get out and some hiking — maybe Martin Luther King Day but it’s going to be cold.

Looking ahead to Sunday, isolated snow showers. ๐ŸŒง Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Breezy, with a west wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 64 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ Day by day spring is coming. Did you see my post about Rensselearville and trout season? It’s only like a few months away until April 1st, although truth be told, most of the good trout holes are located in places where I don’t have cell service which makes it bit hard to work on the laptop with a fishing pole in the opposite hand.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm with dusk at 5:35 pm. Happy Birthday to Me. I am working from home so I won’t have to stay in the office or necessarily do anything special. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.

Towards the Sun

January 11, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Two weeks to 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Not a lot of sun for today. Dark and overcast, and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ I am sure at some point we will see the sun again, but so far the optimistic forecasts have been just that — rather optimistic but not true. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Maybe in ten days, the new leadership at the National Weather Service will improve that forecast.

Out for the morning walk. ๐ŸšถIt could be colder so I’m not complaining, but I don’t like the lack of sun. Air has a tinge of wood smoke and manure on it. More people out walking than expected today. ๐Ÿ‘ช But so we move forward on this Monday. At least with working from home, I don’t have to dress up for work. ๐Ÿ•ดThat’s kind of nice, saves on the dry cleaning bills. ๐Ÿš Plus no rushing for the bus. If I’m a few minutes late to get back to home, ๐Ÿก not going to miss the bus. โŒš Which is good because I’m running a bit late.

I got milk ๐Ÿฅ› at the store ๐Ÿฌ yesterday after my evening walk. That made the coffee โ˜• much better this morning. Pancakes ๐Ÿฅž For breakfast, I wanted eggs ๐Ÿฅš but I didn’t have any so that was not to be. Not going to be a real real nice day but except for my morning and evening walks needn’t go anywhere.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers between 1pm and 4pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 30 degrees at 1pm. Typical for today. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1975. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:59 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:43 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:14 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:50 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 21 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Maximum wind chill around 22 at 6am; Light south wind. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1968.

So far I haven’t caught any more mice after the one I caught. ๐ŸYesterday I heard another in the wall but I haven’t seen it or caught it yet. So be it.

I have a bunch more maps and interactive stuff ๐Ÿ—บ for the blog today. While I finally have added legends to most of the newer maps, there was some issues that kept them from displaying by default.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees. Not sure if I’m going to the Adirondacks this weekend, it’s the long Martin Luther King Jr weekend.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 68 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผThat what happens two days after seven weeks until spring. But the important thing is we are inching closer. When there is no hope, there is spring, as they say.

As previously noted, next Monday is Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค when the sun will be setting at 4:51 pm with dusk at 5:22 pm. On that day in 2020, we had snow showers with cloudy skies and temperatures between 30 and 10 degrees. Pretty much what one would expect. That said, with virtual MLK Day celebrations due to CORONA the weather doesn’t matter much. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1973.

Walking A Dog

January 9, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ ! Cold and dry enough today, that it’s good for a good shock. Two weeks to National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ .ย Partly sunny and 20 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธAll weekend is going to be relatively cold — things won’t start to thaw out until Monday around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I should get off my ass and get outside, ๐Ÿšถbut I don’t know, the weather didn’t turn out quite as nice as expected for today. โ›… I still think I’ll go out to Five Rivers although I’m leaning against walking out to Van Dyke Preserve first, as that will add a lot more miles of walking, and it looks like it might be very cold walking along Meads Road with the breeze. I just wish there was more sun. โ˜

Added a bunch of new WMS and tile servers to the blog mapper, so I am looking forward to posting a bunch of a very neat maps in the coming weeks. ๐Ÿ—บ Also did some more West Virginia maps and other inter actives I’ll be posting in the coming weeks. I have to say there are so many cool WMS services out there, and when you join them together with Leaflet there are many neat maps one can make with only a single line of code.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just glad the week is over. โœ… On so many levels, this first week of January was just absolutely awful in all ways but the markets. Those paper gains sure looked nice, but they are all imaginary and are nothing but a number.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 31 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around January 23rd. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2008. 9.9 inches of snow fell back in 1953.โ„

I will believe it when I see the sun, ๐ŸŒฅ because there are a lot more clouds then sun this morning. Maybe it will change. Just gotta give it time I guess. This week has been pretty miserable with all of the clouds, although Thursday was pretty nice. Or maybe it’s jut all the whining on news media and interwebs that have put us all in a bad mood. ๐Ÿ˜กย I think the best thing to do is tune it out. But that can be hard to do.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:56 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:41 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:12 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:48 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 21 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Maximum wind chill around 14 at 5am; Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1968.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 10 weeks remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผย When there is no hope, there is spring. And cheese. We like that. I mean who can be opposed to fatty-bonds of secretion of mammary gland exposed mold? ๐Ÿง€ I know, vegetarians, but they’re not really human. I mean if people didn’t eat food, there would be a lot less cows.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:27 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 37 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.
