Good evening! Mostly clear and 61 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees. A pleasant evening, not too cool, sitting out back watching some YouTube ๐ŸŽž๏ธ I downloaded and then a copy of the NY Back Country Hunters series on Learn to Hunt. Always good to learn a thing or two new.

It was a nice day up at Rennselearville State Forest. ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ’ฎ๐Ÿฆ‹ I do wish though I had gotten an earlier start so I would have had more time to explore more of the forest ๐Ÿ”ญ but I did get a few hours to poke around the forest. ๐ŸŒฒThe morning was kind of busy with work stuff – I ended up having to run some numbers ๐Ÿ”ข after a work call ๐Ÿ“ž then I got working on some edits to something else.

Like always I do like poking around those back country roads ๐Ÿฎ and this time up at Rennselearville State Forest was no exception. First time I’ve been on Travis Hill in many years – still mostly just hunting camps up there. ๐ŸฆŒ A lot of changes to the tree cover at the state forest ๐ŸŒฒsince I was last there with harvests.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 55 degrees at 4am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 10pm. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1964.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 22% illuminated. The Harvest ๐ŸŒฝ Moon is on Sunday, September 27. The darkest hour is at 12:52 am, followed by dawn at 6:05 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:33 am in the east (84ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:11 am with sun in the east (90ยฐ). Tonight will have 11 hours and 23 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

This evening when I was at the folks house ๐Ÿก I went online and increased my weekly average investments in adjustance to my increased pay as a supervisor. Investments are growing nicely although I’m not sure if I they are fully above the pre pandemic highs so far its been good times. ๐Ÿ’ต Both retirement and mid term savings are growing ๐Ÿ“ˆ and I’m getting closer to being able to afford the off-grid property in the 2030s and partial retirement to hobby farm – homestead in the 2040s. ๐Ÿ

I do need to make some hard decisions by the end of November ๐Ÿ’ฐ because I expect to be retiring Big Red next fall and I may not want to renew all of my certificate of deposit if I need a new vehicle. ๐Ÿš˜ That said, I’ve put more money into regular savings going forward and less in the market because I’m starting to think that the stock market is getting way over valued with all the coronavirus stimulus. Interest rates – at 7/10th of a percent on savings sucks though as your almost paying the bank ๐Ÿฆ for the privilege of holding your money. I don’t know if I want another car or truck but if I do I’ll probably look at something more economical to drive that uses less fuel โ›ฝ and spends less time at the shop. ๐Ÿ”ง Maybe a Prisus or a Tacoma.

I find motoring ๐Ÿ incredibly stressful ๐Ÿ˜ต and I look and see how much damage driving ๐Ÿš˜ does to our communities. Cars have ruined our urban fabric and polluted the landscape with smoke, noise and acres of asphalt. They kill and mame many and are so expensive to drive and insure. ๐Ÿš‘ And they always break down ๐Ÿ”ง and make scary noises. But on the other hand, they are the best ways to escape cities to the mountains ๐Ÿ—ป and remote farm country. ๐Ÿšœ

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Morning shouldn’t be too bad though. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 10th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 4pm. South wind 9 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1948.

I am thinking tomorrow about hiking out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ in the morning before it gets all cloudy โ›… and starts to rain โ˜”. I still need to keep working on the paper ๐Ÿ“„ I’m editing and I have numbers ๐Ÿ”ข to crunch among other work projects this afternoon – and maybe some new blog content to do too.

Hazy Catskills

September 10, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 am. Surprisingly muggy for what is a relatively mild night but truth be told the humidity is not expected to last.

I ended up working late into the evening after a long meeting downtown. ๐Ÿ’ผ I haven’t really been downtown since the pandemic and certainly not in the office ๐Ÿข since then so it was kind of odd to see all those people on the street wearing masks ๐Ÿ˜ท to say nothing of the socially distant meeting around the big conference table with only a few participants, spread out six feet from each other. Parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ my big truck in the lot was a bitch, I’ll probably seriously consider taking the bus ๐Ÿš next time downtown. The last time I rode the bus it seemed like the buses were very clean and empty but maybe things have changed now that backdoor boarding is no more.

I also went to Walmart to pick up more supplies and once again forgot laundry soap. ๐Ÿ‘š At some point I’ll get down to the store and then the laundromat and clean my clothes. I actually find I need more shirts now that I have so many Zoom Meetings lately and have to look nicer. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธMy evening walk was nice and pretty quiet.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 26th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10pm. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 6:03 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:31 am in the east (83ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:09 am with sun in the east (89ยฐ). The record high of 98 was set in 1931.

I have what appears to be another lengthy Zoom meeting on Friday, ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ which once again I’ll do from the park under that tree. It should be a nice place to do the meeting and the tree makes for a good background, the internet is fast ๐Ÿ’ป and it’s quiet. Plus if I get bored I can watch the traffic in the distance. ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšš๐ŸšŒ

In four weeks on October 8 the sun will be setting in the west (262ยฐ) at 6:24 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 49 minutes and 21 seconds earlier then tonight. September 7, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees.

It’s good to be home ๐Ÿก and sleeping in my bed ๐Ÿ›. Sure nights are fun in the woods but I also like a good shower ๐Ÿšฟ and the ability to wake up clean. Plus it’s going to be a busy day at work tomorrow with lots of Zoom Meetings do I’m going to need the Wi-Fi to get work done. Maybe if I was in the Adirondacks and near the Spectulator Library I would have stayed a few more days ๐Ÿ–ฅ but I’m back home.

Going to be hot for September tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜ฐ but nothing like a few months ago. I will probably work from the park ๐Ÿž or maybe the library although I do also need to get to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘š Another big long Zoom Meeting but sitting in the park with a lawn chair makes it not so bad. I also have a Pine Bush meeting tomorrow ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ and plan to go over to John Wolcott house on Wednesday. ๐Ÿ”Ž ๐Ÿ“„

Kunjamunk from the Boat Launch

September 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ . Mostly sunny and 55 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. ๐ŸŒžThere is a west breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

A pretty nice quiet morning, ๐Ÿ˜ although that baby ๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿป in the campsite across the way I can hear crying ๐Ÿ˜ข a bit. The campsite is still 200 feet away but noise travels. It was nice the first half of the weekend when the site was vacant but so be it.

Last night I had a mouse ๐Ÿญ in the truck cap again. It’s not a nest, I actually spotted it climbing ๐Ÿง—๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ in over the gap in the tailgate. I’m going to see if I can remove everything from from the bed today and clean around where that synthetic PMD aka oil of lemon eucalyptus ๐Ÿ‹ leaked earlier in the summer while camping ๐Ÿ•.

Should be another nice day. ๐ŸŒžNo real plans, I’ll just hang around camp and walk down to Somerset along the Deerfield River later. I thought about driving ๐Ÿš˜ up to the Stratton Pond Trailhead but I don’t feel like hiking a crowded trail. I’d rather just stay closer to camp today.

September 4, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ! Cutting torches stop COVID-19 as they say. Next Friday is September 11th ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. I feel like September 11th was a Friday in 2001. Not totally sure, it could have been another day. I just remember how quiet it was with all the planes grounded. โœˆ Partly cloudy and 61 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. โ›… There is a west breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees.

Morning started out cloudy โ˜๏ธ but it’s cleared out, as the sun has risen. That’s good as I need the solar power โ˜€ for work today. Laptops are power hungry. ๐Ÿ”Œ But hopefully I can use my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ for a lot of the emails and stuff, I might also use it for the Zoom Meeting today ๐Ÿ“น which I wasn’t expecting but it came up.

Towards Brodie Wind Farm

September 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Corn Moon ๐ŸŒ•! Rain showers and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees.

Another rather dreary day โ˜๏ธ and then we have a long stretch of nice weather ahead. โ˜€๏ธGoing to be a nice weekend so I’m heading up to Vermont I think tomorrow after work will do the remote work thing from there for a while. Going to be fairly cool so I’m hoping I can leave with ice I have and maybe get coffee creamer for once the ice runs out because it’s a pain to run to town from there. ๐Ÿฅƒ I thought about leaving today or tomorrow before work to ensure that I can get a campsite with good cell service and solar for power. ๐Ÿ”Œ

Today will have showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 71 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 18th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 4pm. South wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953.

I plan to start packing ๐Ÿ’ผ as time allows today and will go shopping ๐Ÿ›’ tonight for food and supplies. I don’t need a lot but I want to have enough to eat for at Five nights, with the last two with minimal ice in the cooler. Not going to be real hot so the ice should last longer this time. I am thinking I will bring the propane heater โ™จ๏ธ to warm my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป because some of the mornings might be chilly.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 55.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-15.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:52 pm with the sun in the west (275ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (281ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:29 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 7:56 pm, which is one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:33 pm. At sunset, look for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 69 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 53 at 8am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 54 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.

Yes, I would say it looks like a very nice weekend to end summer. ๐Ÿฆ‹ Not super warm but sunny. I am sure in some places in the mountains we will be starting to see colors popping up. ๐Ÿ‚ Looking forward to a few days in the woods although I do actually think some of the autumn trips I’m planning will be even more fun. No Moose River Plains this year though because I need cellphone reception for work. I do like the idea of spending some time in Central NY where I can run to libraries for the Zoom Meetings and anytime I need a lot of bandwidth for work.

I got my first bigger paycheck yesterday. ๐Ÿ’ฐThe money is nice but it’s actually not that much when I figure in retirement and taxes. Probably going to invest or save virtually all of it because I don’t need more garbage to have to pay to get of at the transfer station ๐Ÿ—‘. It’s more fun to watch my investments and savings grow โ™ and look at off-grid properties on Facebook then spend the money. I just find there is too much stuff today and for most things the less you have the happier ๐Ÿ˜Š you are as everything you buy always breaking down. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now, the Average High is 65 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:34 pm with dusk at 7:02 pm.

Curve

August 31, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Where did August go? Tomorrow is September, pew pew. ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ซ Next Monday is Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ. Very late this year. Mostly sunny and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6pm. Everything you need to know. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1953.

So I have that Zoom meeting this morning, ๐Ÿ“น that I think might be fun to do from down at the park for a change from the library. So many hours of Zoom these days. At least I can flip to another browser tab. ๐Ÿ–ฅ I also want to see if I can get some newer topographic maps from the USGS to use for comparison sake to the old ones. ๐Ÿ—บ I downloaded some more videos to watch too.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 55.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-15ยฐ vs. 6/21). Already lost 15 degrees from the first day of summer. A six foot person will cast a 4.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:55 pm with the sun in the west (276ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (282ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:33 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 7:59 pm, which is one minute and 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (121ยฐ) at an altitude of 7ยฐ from the horizon, 244,992 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:36 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 57 degrees at 4am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. South wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 51 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1967.

On this day in 1965, Super Guppy took it’s first flight. ๐Ÿ›ซThe aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, which in turn was named for its resemblance to a pregnant guppy. โœˆ๏ธFive were built in two variants, both of which were colloquially referred to as the “Super Guppy”.

Labor Day Weekend looks very nice. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 53 at 9am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 55 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.

Makes me want to reconsider my plans for the weekend ๐Ÿ’ญ but I’m still really not sure because I want to avoid the crowds but I need a place with cellphone reception ๐Ÿ“ถ for work plus I’m not sure what the forecast will actually be by next weekend. Maybe Vermont but I’m undecided. Or maybe tent camping locally? ๐Ÿ•

As previously noted, next Monday is Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ when the sun will be setting at 7:18 pm with dusk at 7:47 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 73 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1945.
