Going to be a beautiful Saturday for a drive out in Rensselaer County ๐Ÿ›ป

Get your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure and whatever comes my way.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Going to be a beautiful start to the weekend for doing some driving around. Partly cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ I do wish I could go out camping, but things are going to be muddy after the rain, plus I’m thinking a week from next Thursday of heading up to the Adirondacks for a three-day weekend, assuming they don’t get a shit ton of snow up north in the meantime or it’s pouring rain all Easter weekend. ๐Ÿ‡

Things are going better since I’ve been doing more research ๐Ÿ›– on housing options, and realizing I have to be more flexible on my thinking — even if it means a longer commute then is ideal to live rural. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพSpending a lot of money on gas โ›ฝ๏ธ and burning through cars ๐Ÿš— every 8-10 years ain’t fun, but I may have to push closer to 35 mile commute rather then the less 30 mile commute I was going for. The thing is in 8 years from my next car purchase in 2025, I’ll have built up my solar system and there will be far more options for electric vehicles. ๐Ÿ”Œ I really like some of the options for modular cabins, especially the smaller ones built to code for residential use at a factory and delivered to the site with full interior built. Right now I’m quite enthralled by the Zook Settler and similar style small-one floor code-compliant pre-built residential cabins. I am thinking one floor, no basement, smallest size for a smallest possible electrical and heating demand. I like the wood-walls, that won’t sure the dirt like drywall, and the metal roof for fire safety and insurance savings, lest an ember fall on the roof.

Then get an EPA-certified, efficient wood stove and a small heat pump and use one of the bedrooms as a mechanical room — for batteries, split-phase inverter, well pressure tank, and maybe eventually a washing machine and computer equipment. ๐Ÿ”‹ If I get serious about the map making business, I might eventually get an used plotter. I am thinking the heat pump can be used when I’m not there to keep things from freezing in winter. โ™จ๏ธ Wouldn’t run much though, as I’d keep the temperature low on the heat pump in the winter, ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ and the thing is a cabin built to 2018 federal energy standards, as required by NY State, passing blower efficiency tests, ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธis going to have minimal heat loss. I am going to need a quality gasoline generator like a Honda, which will have remote start, which can be triggered off inverter on low battery, which can keep things from freezing up in winter if I’m away for an extended time. Plus as much as I personally loathe air conditioning, the climate is warming ๐ŸŒŽ๏ธ and it sure would be nice to come home to on that sultry summer nights, especially when the batteries are full and it makes sense to be keeping the cabin cold rather then wasting the solar energy. ๐ŸงŠ Use a standard electric refrigerator and probably a gas stove converted to use propane — and in winter, sometimes use the wood stove to atop. If I’m only using propane for the stove, I can get away with 30 lb propane tanks, that I can throw in the pickup and get filled at any propane retailer rather then paying a big truck to come out there and be dependent on one supplier. That said, it’s going to be a lot of money, but I’ve saved for a long time, done well in the markets. What I’m building is far smaller then your typical suburban home and will consume far less energy, especially fossil energy.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 54 degrees at 5pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. West wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1990. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

At any rate, that’s all fun and games, ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ though first I have to find land that I love โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅand is a good fit for me. The commute thing sucks, but I want to find a place that feels like and will be my home for the rest of my life.ย  ๐Ÿš— I am exploring Rensselaer County today, not because that’s necessarily where I will move, as I’m biased towards the Hilltowns of Albany County, but as far as birds eye distance goesย  ๐Ÿฆœ there’s more remote country, closer to work then in the Hilltowns, being that work in Menands. ๐Ÿ The roads kind of suck and traffic in Rensselaer County, (Hoosick Street and NY 7) but as a property owner, the conservative politics of land of Joe Bruno would suit me well. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ What’s good for my business, as I like to say, might not necessarily always be good for myself. Not only do I want to look at a list of parcels I’ve seen listed in Hoosick Falls, Petersburg and Grafton, I also want to explore some of Petersburg State Forest for mountain biking, hiking and camping ๐Ÿ•๏ธ ๐Ÿฅพ in the future. It’s fun to drive the back roads.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:26 pm with the sun in the west (263ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (269ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:04 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (215ยฐ) at an altitude of 73ยฐ from the horizon, 239,018 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:05 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

For the Easter weekend, ๐Ÿฐ as I was noting, I really want to get out of town to go to the Adirondacks. The burn ban doesn’t apply to small campfires, and I don’t think it’s going to be bone dry up north at that point based on the forecast. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Plus I really want a good fire to help myself sleep betterย  ๐Ÿ›Œ and burn up some of the accumulated papers. I have nothing but disdain for the burn ban, but I understand the fire risk this time of year, as I know how easy it can be set your yard on fire, and as a future property owner I don’t want that to happen. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ You can say what you want about New York State, but it pays my bills and it’s my home. Building standards mean I will end up with a quality, energy efficient building even if I have my views on the gun laws and open burning restrictions. Happy March 16th.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 41 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. Light southeast wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1916.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท when the sun will be setting at 7:40 pm with dusk at 8:08 pm.

Snow and Ice Covered Truck Trail

The mornings quickly haven’t been so dark ๐ŸŒ…

When the time change first hit with that power outage on Monday things were quite dark. But we are gaining daylight quickly in the morning in part because the transit of the sun is shifting earlier due to earth wobble and because spring is approaching rapidly adding daylight to both ends of the day.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Can you believe it? I can’t. Partly cloudy and 42 degrees at the land of the Delmaritian. ๐ŸŒค๏ธ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 11 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ I can probably leave my windows open in the meantime though today was a bit chilly to start out.

Going to really enjoy that bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride in today. It was a cold start with the windows open but it’s warming up quickly with the sun out. ๐Ÿฆ Those red winged black birds are loud this morning, along with the song sparrows. I got to get back into bird watching again like during the pandemic. I was up at around 4:30 AM but that’s not surprising as I was alseep before 8 PM last night. Got a good nights sleep ๐Ÿ›Œ thanks to having the windows open. But I was dog tired before I went to bed. ๐Ÿถ

Another really nice late winter day ahead. Not record breaking but still. Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. 23 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became heavy snow by afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1946. 17.0 inches of snow fell back in 2017.โ„

Last night I cooked up a sweet potato in the microwave, ๐Ÿ  mixed in some turmeric and nutritional yeast, and had some more of the black beans ๐Ÿฒ and tomatoes that I cooked up in the morning. It was going to be good meal before for a walk in the park,  ๐Ÿƒ but after dinner I was tired and decided to sit out back and read for a while until it get  dark ๐Ÿ”– and then I went straight to bed. I’ve been so tired lately in evening, because I wake up so early. That said, most mornings I’m not pissing away, but instead after eating breakfast I will read or listen to a podcast — or jot down my thoughts while I watch the sun rise. ๐ŸŒ…

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.1° from the due south horizon (-25.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:24 pm with the sun in the west (262°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (268°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:01 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:29 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (249°) at an altitude of 53° from the horizon, 233,320 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:02 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 58 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 9pm. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 5am. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 8th. East wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had light snow in the evening. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 1 occurred back in 1993.

I am going to bring my laptop home tonight, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ’ป and will walk down to the library ๐Ÿ“š and work down there. I want to research a few more properties, plan out my exploring property from the backroads trip for the weekend, and look more at what options are out there for cabin kits and plans. ๐Ÿ›– I keep learning more things and discovering more things I don’t know much about.

Today in 1900, the Gold Standard Act is ratified, placing United States currency on the gold standard. ๐Ÿช™ Did that lead to inflation after it ended in the seventies? Pundits have debated that for decades but with the growing world economy it proved to be unworkable. It kind of had to fade away.

Weekend looks nice for March. โ˜€ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 56. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Sunday, showers likely, mainly between 8am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 45 degrees. If Easter wasn’t two weeks away and were things not during the fire season I’d love to have a night or two in the wilderness. Maybe it will rain and snow for Easter Weekend ๐Ÿฐ but that’s still my best hope for getting out of town with the Good Friday holiday โ˜ฆ๏ธ.

Looking ahead to next week next Thursday is First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ when the sun will be setting at 7:10 pm with dusk at 7:37 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 47 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1921. Still looking about a month to a month and a half until a shit ton of black flies ๐Ÿœ and tulips ๐ŸŒท around. We’re still in the month of the manure spreaders. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

Middleburgh Round Top and Ecker Hollow

Cold start to this January morning ๐ŸŒ…

Actually kind of seasonable for National Bird Day, but we have been spoiled by the relatively warm days and especially nights of this winter. El Niño plus climate change has really stuck a fork in this winter. Going to get w good snowstorm come Saturday night into Sunday but it’s not expected to last with it warm enough that the roads should be clear for the Monday commute, and mostly melted away with rain and temperatures in the mid 50s by Wednesday into Thursday.

Good morning! Clear and 18 degrees at the Delmar, NY. There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Before the snow comes Saturday night into Sunday then is washed away by the rain come Wednesday into Thursday.

Breakfast was eggs with onions, shredded broccoli and corn. ๐Ÿณ Reheated coffee with milk and vanilla. Up at five o’clock this morning, I never set an alarm โฐ as my desire to go to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ gets me going in the morning. Continuing my Support Vector Machine Learning course this morning. ๐Ÿค– I always find I learn and think best early in the morning.

It’s going to be a cold ride in ๐Ÿšฒ but I’m going to do it because I like the ride and the sun will feel good. The sun angle is starting to increase even while the mercury normally drops this time of year as we approach the coldest on average week of the year – Martin Luther King Day Week. It saves a buck thirty and it’s a good exercise. Next week with session attire, likely moving to the suburban office, rain and snow just means it will be unlikely I ride to work much at all. I’ll keep my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ out for birds ๐Ÿฆ on my ride through the Norman’s Kill Gorge this morning.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 32 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Northwest wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had patches of fog in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1950. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

Ran to the office ๐Ÿข last night to get my plants ๐ŸŒฟ and hopefully it won’t have been too much of a cold shock ๐Ÿคฏ for the plants. I’m most worried about the wandering jew, that plant struggles enough already with getting rooted. I did make sure my truck was good and warm for the trip home. I also brought home most of the other personal stuff in my office – and I’ll bring home my personal and work laptops ๐Ÿ’ป today so I’m ready to move to my new office come Monday if so assigned. I’m certainly ready and excited to be taking on the roll of Director of Data Services as soon as possible. I’ve been working on training my replacement as Deputy Director in Research Services. ๐Ÿ”ข Data Services though is far more up my alley then Research though I found research work to often be quite interesting and benefited from my data science knowledge.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.7° from the due south horizon (-46.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:51 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is 57 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:43 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 32 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 14 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 3 seconds over today.

Decided after coming home last night to make a quick pot of homemade chicken soup.๐Ÿฒ You know just the essentials – water, salt, carrots, celery, spinach, whole wheat noodles, onions, garlic and some pepper and spices. Left over pork roast diced and a can of canned chicken ๐Ÿ”. No, I don’t use broth. It’s good enough with the spices I have in the cabinet – I’d rather enjoy the natural, simple flavors.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Light and variable wind. Reality check โ˜‘ . In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1996.

Last night was remarkably cold for moving the plants ๐ŸŒฟ but I wanted to get the things out of my office before the snow came and have to deal with it next week. Plan to clean and continue to scrub down my office today. Then when whenver I need to move out, I’m good. Got about $40 in groceries last night, which doesn’t buy much but will keep my pantry somewhat full for a while, though Walmart didn’t have bananas. ๐ŸŒ

Tomorrow will be cloudy โ˜, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. Typical for Tomorrow. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had patches of fog in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2007. 12.7 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, snow, mainly before 4pm. ๐ŸŒจ Winter finally arrives but should be cleaned up by the work week. High near 32. Northeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Friday is Coldest Day Recorded in Albany ๐ŸŒจ ๐Ÿ’จ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm. It was an unthinkable negative 26 degrees in Albany on January 11, 1968. I know those negative 17 degrees days we had a few years back we’re super cold. I can’t imagine that amount of cold. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and but generally mild temperatures between 38 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 2020.

Climbing out of the Ravine

Let’s get r started on the year when we expect to hit 1.5 celcius with the global climate ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Happy 2024! Going to be a hot one as they say about the coming year. Maybe not in Albany, it’s one city in the world, though it certainly looks like it might be fairly mild January to kick off the year, though not as mild as last year.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 32 degrees at the Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Up at 5 AM this morning โฐ like usual to get a jump on the morning and cook breakfast. ๐Ÿฅฎ Decided to kick off the year with an oatmeal-apple cake that I baked in the oven with lots of cinanmon and coffee. โ˜• Nice start to the morning. Planning to head out shortly to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ to watch the sun rise and look at the birdies. ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ Not quite sunrise yet, but I have lights on my bike. Kind of a cool morning, but so be it, that’s to be expected for January. Not going to break any temperature records this morning.

New Year’s Day will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to January 12th. North wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1966. 9.2 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:59 am with sun having an altitude of 24.4° from the due south horizon (-46.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:40 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 48 seconds over today.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 22 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

As previously noted, next Monday is Bubble Bath Day ๐Ÿงผ when the sun will be setting at 4:40 pm with dusk at 5:10 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 35 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 2008.

The Road to the $15 Mininum Wage in New York

It was the morning before Christmas ๐Ÿคถ ๐ŸŽ… โ„๏ธ

One week until New Years Eve, might actually be cold and snowy for that. But foggy, damp and everything is kind of mush for this Christmas Eve up in the wilds of Madison County.

Good morning on this somewhat damp Christmas Eve ! ๐ŸŽ„ Cloudy, damp, foggy and 35 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. ๐ŸŒฅ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It was drizzle when I first awoke ๐ŸŒง๏ธ after heading to bed ๐Ÿ› early last night due to the rain. It tapered off early this morning but left everything a damp slushy mess. Eggs for breakfast were good, I’ve been poking around camp โ›บ sitting by the heater and slowly gathering firewood and chopping it up for the night ahead. ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿช“

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 39 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 14th. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 15 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. 13.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I swear there are two types of winter days when camping. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธโ˜ƒ๏ธ Bitterly cold but sunny and rainy and damp. Today is the later. It’s fine but the forecast was so much more optimistic a few days back. I was hoping for sun โ˜€ today for a nice walk ๐Ÿšถ in the woods and some Christmas Eve bird ๐Ÿฆ watching. Tomorrow, Christmas might be slightly better but I have my doubts. It’s still nice to be away and it’s not real cold.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 23.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 34 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-northeast (78ยฐ) at an altitude of 25ยฐ from the horizon, 237,846 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 9 seconds over yesterday.

Christmas Eve will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 12th. Light south wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 11 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1969.

Yesterday I went down to Hamilton.๐Ÿฆ†It was chilly at Woodman Pond and the Old Chenango Canal so I didn’t stay long or spend much time poking around the village. Instead I went to Price Chopper got a few extra groceries and headed over to Moscow Hill to set up camp โ›บ, have a nice lunch and gather firewood for the night to come. Drizzled a bit midday then snow and sleet in the evening and rain around 8 pm.

Snow Covered Forest

Cold and gray for festivus ๐Ÿ’ˆ

It might be a fair bit warmer today but with the breeze and clouds it feels pretty cold. I’m taking down camp to head to Hamilton and ultimately Brookfield to camp and explore that forest through Christmas Day. Then maybe on Christmas I’ll head down to Cooperstown and then home. My parents have been sick with a bad cold so it seems likely Christmas will be remote. I’ll still probably head home on Christmas Day though I also have boxing day off.

Good morning! Cloudy and 31 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Oatmeal pancakes ๐Ÿฅž for breakfast though I wish I had more bananas ๐ŸŒ to use in the mix. They blacken in the cold quickly but they’re still good but I eat them all up yesterday. I’ll have to stop at the Price Chopper in Hamilton. ๐Ÿšฒ Thinking I might ride around the village a bit too though it depends on if it’s raining and the weather. Outdoor activities can be tough in December, the weather kind of sucks.

Dropped my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ this morning when I was stacking wood and couldn’t find it until I heard the hour chime. โฐ I was lucky ๐Ÿ€ I heard that otherwise it would be likely lost. Not that my phone ๐Ÿ“ž is worth much – the touch screen is increasingly malfunctioning. But I’m glad I found it.

Today will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 5pm, then a chance of rain showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 21st. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which and some light snow in the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1990. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1947.โ„

Not a real nice day ahead ๐ŸŒฅ which is why I figured it would be a good day to move campsites then I can spend the bulk of Christmas Eve exploring Charles Baker State Forest ๐Ÿฆ watching birds and hiking when hopefully it will be somewhat nicer. This weekend after looking beautiful has somewhat slid downhill unfortunately. ๐Ÿ˜”

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 23.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (90ยฐ) at an altitude of 32ยฐ from the horizon, 234,965 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 5 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 1am, then rain showers likely. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 7 degrees. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1989.

Yesterday morning got kind of a late start ๐Ÿฅถ because it was so cold out. Plus I wanted to chop wood ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿช“ so I’d be ready when I got back to camp โ›บ. Then I did a hike at Oxbow Falls County Park ๐Ÿž and looked off the escarpment. A fairly clear day.

Rode 36 miles yesterday from Canastota to East Verona on the Old Erie Canal Trail then back via NY 46 to Oneida, then the Oneida Rail Trail to the Oneida Waterline Trail to Wampsville back to Canastota. ๐Ÿšฒ It was cold this morning so I got a late start, plus I visited Oxbow Falls in the morning, but I hit the trail at noon and returned back at four.

Drove back to camp before dark, made turkey soup ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿฒ with lots of delicious vegetables. No bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ this meal even though next Saturday is bacon day.

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Bacon Day ๐Ÿฅ“ when the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm with dusk at 5:09 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 57 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1984.

Wetlands Across the Canal

If you ask most people, outside of the most dedicated deer hunters, probably November wouldn’t rank on their short list of the best months of the year. But it really is my favorite.

November is that time of year typically before snow is on the ground and things are icy and slippery. It’s a time when the leaves are off the trees and the woods lays bare for all to see. Wildlife is busy gathering food in preparation for the long winter ahead – or simply heading south as is the case with the birds and geese.

The trees gone bare reveal many a vista hidden by the leaves of summer. You can see contours of the woods once hidden, the old farm garbage dump in the gully. The deer are in their rut, carelessly wandering around the woods mostly looking for does to impregnate. The air has such a nice cool but refreshing feel. It’s so nice to be able to put that vest back on again.

With colder weather upon us, folks fire up their woodstoves and outdoor wood boilers, giving small towns across the area that very homey back woods smell of wood smoke. Farmers who have harvested their crops are busy applying manure, hoping to fertilize the ground before its frozen. It can be tangy and pungent but it’s part of the season.

I like the cool long nights of November in the woods. I like wearing my vest, sitting down by the campfire. I like how quiet the woods is, the starry nights that start early and how the moonlight shines through the trees. Or the deep blue skies and the browns and grays of the autumn months.
