January 19, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. ๐Ÿ‘ท Back to work after the long Martin Luther King Day Weekend. At least it’s not a big deal working from home — work is just around the corner from my bedroom. Two weeks to Ground Hog Day ๐Ÿป . Cloudy and 28 degrees on my morning walk past the Bethlehem Central High School. โ˜ There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. I decided it was decent enough that I would just wear my vest out walking. There are 1/2 inch or so of icy snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ A few breaks of sun but not a lot.

Sunday wasn’t too bad, had dinner out at the folks house. ๐Ÿ Mom made baked ziti, it was pretty good. I didn’t end up going out hiking yesterday because my toe is a bit sore and the weather was rather crappy, but I did end up going out for both my evening walk last night and I’m walking today. ๐Ÿšถ Today I think I am going to bundle up and go down to the library to work, as I’m hoping to finish getting my cleaned up install of Windows 10 working ๐Ÿ’ป and also watch the Governor’s budget address. I was hoping for more sun ๐ŸŒค at least later in the week, but at least today will be relatively mild. I guess tomorrow might be a bit more sunny for a while but it looks like it will be getting cold later in the day. ๐Ÿฎ Going to need to get milk later today so I have it for the coffee tomorrow.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers between noon and 3pm. Most cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 23rd. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1929. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.โ„

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 38% illuminated. The moon will set in the west (277ยฐ) at 11:47 pm. The moon will rise at 11:00 am. The Wolf ๐Ÿบ Moon is on Friday, January 29. My birthday. The darkest hour is at 12:07 am, followed by dawn at 6:50 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:21 am in the east-southeast (117ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is 37 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:04 am with sun in the southeast (125ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 53 seconds over last night.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers between 11pm and 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 23 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1970.

In four weeks on February 16 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (254ยฐ) at 5:28 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 22 seconds later then today. In 2020 on that day, we had cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 25 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 17 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 2006.

Looking ahead, Ground Hog Day ๐Ÿป is Next Tuesday, Read Across America Day ๐Ÿ“š is in 6 weeks, Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ is in 2 months, Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 14 weeks, Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ is in 14 weeks, 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 15 weeks, 8:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 15 weeks, June ๐Ÿน is in 19 weeks, 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 19 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 20 weeks, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 21 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 22 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 25 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is in 26 weeks, Campfire Day ๐Ÿ”ฅ is in 28 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 31 weeks, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 35 weeks, Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 38 weeks, Election Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 42 weeks, Beaver Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 10 months, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 11 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 48 weeks and 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 49 weeks.

January 18, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day. โ™ฅ The holiday formerly known as Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, it was changed to honor M.L. King after Ronnie Reagan decided he needed to win more black votes, and the consternation of some states, most notably Arizona which had rather racist representatives and didn’t want to honor an insurrectionist. Today also is Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ ! The day we mark the birthday of A. A. Milne, the man who created the beloved bear who had a thing for honey. Nowadays, bears are mostly interested in rummaging through rednecks’ burn barrels in Tioga County, PA to chew on half burnt moldy ham sandwiches and turkey carcasses flavored with burnt plastic. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Yum. Next Monday is 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Yes, the days have grown noticeably longer then they were a few weeks ago. ๐ŸŒž I’ve noticed it in the evening, although it’s not a pronounced as I’m not waiting downtown to catch the bus home at 5 PM. ๐Ÿš Cloudy, some red sky to the south, above one degree of freezing at 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Just imagine how much nicer it would be if we used Celsius? Be a half degree a I recon. I’ll take some honey. There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

M. L. King Day will have a chance of snow showers before 2pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between 2pm and 4pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after 4pm. I’d call that pretty cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 26th. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became snow by afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1973. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

My foot is feeling better ever since I got the athlete’s foot cream on it, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ and let it soaked. Amazing how fast as a bad athlete’s foot infection can go away when you kill off the fungus. I’ve been trying to make sure to change my socks more regularly, ๐Ÿงฆ and hopefully it won’t become a problem. I did get out for my evening walk, which was pleasant ๐Ÿšถ and not too cold. Forgot my muzzle, I mean to the non-III’ers, my mask but that was fine I didn’t see anyone on the street. ๐Ÿ˜ท I’ve not decided on whether or not I’ll go for a walk this morning, but I could go out to Five Rivers as it’sย  a work holiday. ๐Ÿฆ Not real nice day but who doesn’t like a good walk? Maybe I could do Van Dyke Preserve then walk out along the farms on Meads Road out to Five Rivers like I did last weekend. Or maybe that’s a crazy an overly ambitious idea, and I shouldn’t see if I could injure my foot first.

Breakfast this day was scrambled eggs with chopped peppers and ham. ๐Ÿณ It was a pretty good breakfast and now after having another cup or two of coffee โ˜• I should clean up the kitchen next and get the bed made so I can get out. I don’t want to dilly around too much and waste all day, although the weather isn’t going to be great.โ˜ But it’s silly to delay all day. It will be dark out before you know it, despite the longer days.๐ŸŒ† What’s the Gordon Lightfoot song I was listening to on the bus the other day?

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:51 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 5:22 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (195ยฐ) at an altitude of 45ยฐ from the horizon, 249,828 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:57 pm. At sunset, look for snow showers ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 37 degrees. Warm enough the roads will be fine. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over today.

This afternoon going out to the folks house for Sunday dinner, ๐Ÿ˜‹ and I also want to get the rest of the system updates installed on the Winders side of my laptop and get that Cisco program installed so they can telnet in and get all the VPN network drives mounted. ๐Ÿ’ป At least I won’t have to be going downtown as much now when I need to file paperwork or get things off the server, or as mostly has been happening, asking friends to send me files that I need off the server. I really hate using Winders, but sometimes you just got to do it because it’s popular because of all the commercial advertising. If only the feds has stuck to their UNIX-mandate a few more years longer.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 4th. Maximum wind chill around 19 at 12am; Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2020, we had light snow. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -28 occurred back in 1971.

Cold next weekend with temperatures running 7 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Finally, some sun, but you’ll be using your heat. Welcome to the poor house with all your money going to the frackers! And probably 50 cents to the dirt-poor dairy farmer getting a royalty check for the 10 acres of cropland they forfeited for two decades. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 26. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 22. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. While the temperature normally this time of year starts to moderate with the longer days and higher sun angle, it’s

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 61 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผTomorrow marks 60 days, if you do the math. But I expect many cold, much colder then today, days before then.

As previously noted, next Monday is 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 5:00 pm with dusk at 5:30 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain and temperatures between 39 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1938.

Dog in the Mouth

January 17, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday! โ›ช Kind of a cloudy gray morning. โ˜Four weeks to Valentines Day โค๏ธ . Clouds with a few snow showers and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a west-southwest breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I slept horribly last night ๐Ÿคช mainly because I watch a movie about Napster, the RIAA and the craziness that was the 1990s, tying myself up in a knot with the sheets my mid-evening. ๐Ÿ› I remember why I don’t have Internet at home and why I don’t like politics or things technology that much anymore. ๐Ÿ’ป Sure I do mapping and I have my computer that runs Linux, but I only use Open Source software, a very basic window manager — XFCE — and aren’t into all that commercial technology crap. ๐ŸŒMy smartphone is super basic, I think the only paid app on it is US Topo Maps which I use sometimes for hiking and was all of $6 back in the day.๐Ÿ“ฑ

Then I woke up at 4 AM with a toe that was beat red and swollen, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ with a great deal of pain. I’m not that much of a girly man but it was — super painful and swollen. Wasn’t sure what the issue was but it probably was my fault for not putting on fresh shocks before bed. I thought maybe I had an overgrown toe nail — I tried to find my toe nail clippers half awake but gave up. Once I took off my socks, and applied some anti-bacterial foot-spray the pain went away. I think it was just athlete’s foot because I didn’t change my socks being home all day yesterday. I am going to shower ๐Ÿšฟ today, then soak my foot and apply athlete’s foot cream around it. I did find the clippers and clipped the nail back on the toe in case that was the issue but I don’t think it is.๐Ÿ’‡

Then somebody knocked on my door at 9:45 AM, ๐Ÿšช not sure who it was but I super groggy and not in the mood to answer the door. Often I won’t answer the door if I don’t know who it is, just because I’m a bit paranoid and I figure if it’s important, they can text me, leave me a note, or give me a call and do voicemail. ๐Ÿ“ž I am really careful about screening my calls, lest it be a television reporter, a police officer, or anybody unpleasant to speak to like the 90% of all communications these days — SPAM artists.๐Ÿ—‘ Yes, you can stop sending me emails about guest posts on the blog. They don’t exist here. This is my personal blog, so it’s 100% Andy Arthur for good or bad. I am thinking it was the neighbor asking about the power bill I stuck in their mailbox — I think it might have been for the previous tenant. ๐Ÿ“ฌ I probably should have just written return to sender on it and stuck it in my mailbox, but the address was for the neighbor. Or stuck it in the paper trash. โ™ป

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers, mixing with rain after 10am, then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 26th. West wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1889. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

I wanted to go out to Five Rivers but with me still somewhat sore toe, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ the clouds and wind I’m not sure if today is the day. โ˜But I’ll bundle up later and do my evening walk. Maybe stay home and do some reading. ๐Ÿ“š I don’t think the toe issues is a big deal, but it was so awful for that hour or so last night when I was up in terrible pain. ๐Ÿ™„ I certainly pay enough for health insurance that if I need to slap down $25 get my toe checked, I’ll do it but I’m hopeful it good by later. I do need to order more books from the library – not difficult to do especially with the drive-through. Now that I have that hotspot mode on my phone, it’s particularly to browse for books online. ๐Ÿ’ป That said, I do miss walking down to the library and look forward to getting the cost of the more expensive phone plan off my books once things re-open.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:06 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 5:20 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (206ยฐ) at an altitude of 38ยฐ from the horizon, 247,838 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:56 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1957.

I’ve been trying to get Microsoft Windows running on my laptop ๐Ÿ–ฅ as I need it for work. I want to purge a lot of the spamwear on the machine and try to speed up windows.

Been doing some carpet cleaning with rubbing alcohol ๐Ÿงน which actually is quite effective after a suggestion I saw on the internet. But it does stink pand is probably toxic and very flammable. It does work great with a brush though, although I really do need to at some point get a carpet cleaning machine in here or something like that. I probably shouldn’t track so much mud in my apartment. That said, like everything in my inexpensive apartment, the carpet is starting to wear out.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 62 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ Cue Day by Day from the Godspell sound track. It’s going to get cold by the end of the month but at least we are creeping towards the days with higher sun angle. In four weeks, the average temperature will be 4 degrees above freezing and March won’t be that far around the corner. My meteorologist friend likes to point on Meteorological Spring happens on March 1st. I am just disappointed that I will have to wait until July 1st for the official climate normals to come out for the 1991-2020 period — I’m really fascinated to find out.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Valentines Day โค๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:26 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 36 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

Tom Ball Mountain

January 16, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. A rainy Martin Luther King Jr. Dayย  Weekend! It could be snow, but it’s not. Just a very cold, sloppy rain-mix. Six weeks to Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Rain with a lot of slush and dirty-four degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ The kind of day farmers and outdoorsman everywhere dream of if they want to be up their waists slip-sliding in mud and shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ There is a northeast breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 0.5 inches of sloppy ice and slush on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ So you can be slip-sliding away and the roads can be caked with a shit-ton of salt.

I survived my trip down to the office, ๐ŸšŒ and as far as I know I didn’t catch the CORONA or get assaulted by protestors downtown. โœŠ Honestly, it was very quiet yesterday. I think I only saw one other person in office, no protestors and even the buses were empty. ๐Ÿ™Œ I did wash my hands well after I got home. I do plan to stay socially distant from all the happenings in Albany this week, only interacting with it through my computer and phone for work purposes. I don’t want to touch any of that stuff with a 10 1/4 foot stick or whatever you call it.๐Ÿข I’ll be quiet happy sitting at home, working on the computer from Delmar and looking out the window. ๐Ÿ’ป Granted, remote work would be more fun from the Adirondacks but it’s cold up north and there isn’t a lot of places I can camp up there right now with cell service.

Today will snow before 10am, then rain and snow showers likely between 10am and 11am, then rain showers likely after 11am. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 38 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

So yes, today will be a cold and wet day. โ˜” I mean it could be snow, although in many ways I would prefer that but at least the rain will wash the salt off the roads until tonight when it’s reapplied. I am going to continue exploring some LANDSTAT data and some other things and do some reading today.๐ŸŒ Then maybe do some cleaning downstairs and hopefully by evening it will nice enough for the evening walk.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:05 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:49 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:19 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (215ยฐ) at an altitude of 29ยฐ from the horizon, 245,405 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:55 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 41 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before midnight, then a slight chance of snow showers between midnight and 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 31 degrees at 3am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 29th. West wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 9 weeks remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ I can remember last weekend when it was 10 weeks. Each week is one week closer to spring and the black flies, the mud and tangy smell of cow shit in small towns everywhere. And trout fishing. Add about two months two that date, and the black flies will be out in full force and it will be Memorial Day Weekend or something like that. The windows will be open and fresh air.

As previously noted, next Saturday is National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:27 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 37 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. It’s supposed to be warming up at that point a little but I expect below normal temperatures’ in Biden’s America, at least to start out his term. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906. Wishful thinking.

January 15, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Long weekend ahead but it’s Martin Luther King Jr weekend in the bleak of winter and it’s going to rain during the pandemic so don’t get so excited. Two weeks to my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ . Getting old you might say. Probably not wiser, but I haven’t burned my hand with dripping plastic in a few years. Maybe because I live in the city for now, less chance for making black smoke and injuries with fire.

Partly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… A little bit more sun right now for my talk then lately, but hardly a banner morning. But wait there is more — going to cold around my birthday but probably with more sun. Calm wind. So it make it feel fairly mild. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Honestly, right now a pretty nice morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. Seeing the sun โ˜€ is refreshing not that is expected to last. But it is promising to return for late January and be cold โ„. I expect an absolutely frigid February like has been the norm but the strengthening sun angle means any extreme cold and snow ๐ŸŒจ we get in late February won’t last.

Today will have patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 40 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Morning walk now, ๐Ÿšถand later it’s off to head downtown for paperwork and a meeting. I am a bit hesitant with the Corona ๐Ÿ‘พ and riding the bus, but I’ll mask up. ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐ŸšŒ I was surprised to see from that graph I posted last night that 1 in 20 Albany County residents so far has had COVID — it’s really been popping up a lot the past two months, although some has to do with testing. At least Albany County is still not in the yellow or orange zone. ๐Ÿšฆ I really can’t complain about the weather. At any rate it’s nice to get out of the apartment — the morning and evening walks are great but working from home seems so trapping at times, especially when it’s cold and I can’t be outside or in the wilderness. โ„ No more of this working and camping outside of Speculator at least until the springtime.

Yesterday I got to the store and bought the world’s biggest box of Bisquick and cereal. ๐ŸฅฃI try to buy in bulk to reduce the amount of trash because I don’t like going to the transfer station as it costs money and living in the city means fewer opportunities to burn things. ๐Ÿ”ฅ No more free paper recycling. โ™ป I think buying such a big box of Bisquick last time, and eating so many Bisquick biscuits like five years ago was why I stayed away from it. ๐Ÿฅž I guess there is also Bisquick pancakes and other things on the package I can make to use it up. I also fueled up Big Red โ›ฝ because my tank was low, and I wanted to have fuel in case shit gets real next week ๐Ÿ’ฃ and I need to evacuate. I don’t expect next week to be crazy, but there are some on the left who are sure it’s going to be nuts. ๐Ÿ‘Š Well I have my truck, and I’m working from home and I know plenty of places to hide out if necessary. ๐Ÿš— That said, I expect Inauguration Day to be boring, and I’ll watch it from home or maybe down at the library. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Really do need to cut down my bandwidth a bit to make it through the month. Too much streaming video, even though I have a so-called unlimited plan.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:04 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (223ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 242,654 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:54 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

I am watching the bandwidth I’ve been using with my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ over the past three weeks, and I think ๐Ÿค” I need to be careful about how much data I use. While I’m well below the 20 gb Hotspot limit I want to keep the unlimited mobile under the 60 gb for a month to avoid potentially triggering a teems of service review even if I think my usage is consistent, but I don’t have Wi-Fi at home and I use it for a lot of work video streaming and video meetings. ๐Ÿ“น But I really don’t need to watching hour long videos on my phone of manure drag lining as fascinating as that may be. ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿšœ ๐Ÿ’ฉ I can always download those kind of videos at the library and watch them on my laptop.๐Ÿ’ป I also don’t want to get to addicted to watching videos on my phone — one the pandemic is over or warmer weather comes back, I fully plan on going back to my cheaper phone plan without the hotspot or unlimited mobile data. I like walking down to the library or the park when I want to use the internet at night. Keeps me on a schedule, makes it so I’m not staying home all of the time.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 10pm, then rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 36 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 11th. Well I could have dreamed of getting up to the Adirondacks this weekend, ๐Ÿ• but I knew that was unlikely with the normally lousy weather that is the norm this time of year. It’s going to be kind of wet, but I downloaded several videos and I have books to read too. ๐Ÿ“š I really should do more reading. I am probably going to go out to the folks house on Monday, but I’ll see what it’s like. I would be nice to get out and some hiking — maybe Martin Luther King Day but it’s going to be cold.

Looking ahead to Sunday, isolated snow showers. ๐ŸŒง Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Breezy, with a west wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 64 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ Day by day spring is coming. Did you see my post about Rensselearville and trout season? It’s only like a few months away until April 1st, although truth be told, most of the good trout holes are located in places where I don’t have cell service which makes it bit hard to work on the laptop with a fishing pole in the opposite hand.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm with dusk at 5:35 pm. Happy Birthday to Me. I am working from home so I won’t have to stay in the office or necessarily do anything special. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.

Towards the Sun

January 14, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. No sun. โ˜ No surprises on that front. Two weeks to the Wolf Moon ๐Ÿบ๐ŸŒ• . Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

It’s a very typical Upstate NY winter morning. ๐ŸŒจ Cool and gray as I’m out on my morning walk, the air tastes like barnyard and diesel smoke there is a lot of dampness in the air. If it was more normal times, I would be catching the express bus ๐Ÿš downtown and be almost in the office. ๐Ÿข

Today will have a chance of snow, mixing with rain after noon, then gradually ending. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 26th. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1932. 9 inches of snow fell back in 1999.โ„

I think I will follow my usual Thursday plan – shop at lunchtime, ๐Ÿ› gas up the truck โ›ฝ and then go to library for afternoon work session. ๐Ÿ“š When I’m down there I’ll get some files I need, including some old LANDSTAT and declassified satellite photos from the 1960s and 1970s. ๐Ÿ›ฐ I think I could do some very interesting projects with them. I also would like to update my podcasts and maybe get some videos. Friday I’ll probably go down to the office to do paperwork. But first a shower then my morning walk on this kind of cloudy and depressing morning. At some point the sun will shine again.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:03 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:17 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (230ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, 239,728 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 22nd. Light north wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1957.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, rain showers likely before 4pm, then rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 40. West wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

I think it’s fair to say that any plans of the Adirondacks is toast, ๐Ÿฅ‘ not that I have ever had avocado toast, but the stable of emojis lacks a toaster. Save money by staying home I guess, although that’s not nice to my power bill, although I’ve come to realization that weather and the thermostat controlling the main gas heat downstairs has the biggest impact on the gas and electric bill. Don’t get me started on the “Save 10% on your electric bill with renewables crap,” which only is the supply part of electric bill, which really is all of about 25 cents because everything is delivery and the mandatory minimum fees.๐Ÿ”Œ So many of those renewable schemes are scams, which are promoted as the planet burns. ๐ŸŒŽ

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 65 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผIt seems like it was only last Saturday that spring was 10 weeks away. I guess you subtract 5 from 70, you come up with sixty-five. Spring is coming, or so I tell myself.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 5:03 pm with dusk at 5:33 pm.
