April 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Albany got rid of their Pinkster festival ๐ŸŒบ some years back to focus on a bigger tulip festival. ๐ŸŒท Sunny and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Up early this morning, ๐ŸŒ… as I have to drop my truck off for the oil change this morning. ๐Ÿ›ข I could do it myself, but it’s so much easier to have it dropped off at my mechanic ๐Ÿ”ง and let him deal with getting the rusty salt-encrusted filter off and draining and changing the oil. Small engines aren’t so bad, but it can be a bitch to get that filter off sometime, and I can never find 5W-30 synthetic at the store. Then I should be good until November or 7,000 miles when my inspection is due — although I might do another oil change before I go to West Virignia in the fall, especially if it’s in the shop for other repairs at the same time. Not like the bad ol’ days when you did oil changes every 3,000 miles. I’ll drop it off, walk home, and pick it up at lunch time. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ That way I get my morning walk in to on this most beautiful of spring days.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. ๐Ÿšฉ Another red flag day with the wind, the warmth and the dry grass. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 62 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1921. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1982.โ„

At lunch time, I will probably head down to the store ๐Ÿฌ and pick up some groceries. I need more frozen fruit ๐Ÿ“ as I am pretty addicted to that and the Maine frozen Wild Blueberries that they have at Hannaford are like crack, and maybe some eggs and other things. I probably should get the groceries I need for the week, as I don’t have any other reason to drive anywhere this week, although maybe I will go somewhere on Saturday for a hike. I’m thinking Rennselear County but I could decide to just walk somewhere on Saturday and then Sunday maybe do Partridge Run or Rennselearville State Forest. Depends on the forecast.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54° from the due south horizon (-16.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:50 pm with the sun in the west (274°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west (280°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:27 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 7:55 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:30 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 59 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday. it sounds like a pleasant evening, I might go down to park. ๐Ÿž I should get more books at the library. I’ll have to look and reserve some, especially as when I head up to wilderness I like to have books to read.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 16th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Almost warm enough to leave the windows open, for good sleeping. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 13 occurred back in 1982.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. Maximum dew point of 46 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees. No camping plans for this weekend, ๐Ÿ• as the weather doesn’t look great, and I’m worried about it being so dry with a rip-roaring fire in the woods. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The snow is gone even up in the Adirondacks. I am hoping this weekend into next week we will get some rain, ๐ŸŒง and then I can head up north for an extended weekend come Thursday of next week. By then the state budget should be done and things will be quiet.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain showers, cold, cloudy and temperatures between 46 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Houses and Farms

March 16, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Who knows how that monster happened to grow that way? It’s parents are frightened, it wishes it would go away. But the taxes keep coming, and they have to be spent on big bulldozers and tanks of cement. Stand by me, and protect that tree from the freeway misery. Take it Malvina! ๐Ÿ‘ท Some of those historical aerial photos I’ve been posting lately are pretty neat. I wish more were georeferenced, and served as WMS or tiles — I guess I could upload more to MapWarper. Six weeks to Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Partly sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

A cold start to the morning. โ„ I mean it could be snowing out, but I am not ready for 16 degrees in mid-March. I didn’t have the heat turned up, so it took a while for the heat to kick on last night, so it was cold inside during the middle of the night. Especially after we had a day that hit 70 last week. Yeah, it’s been cold the past few days and I’m ready for spring. I am definitely going out for my morning walk though in a little a bit — there is no wind and it’s sunny enough that I expect the weather to be nice for walking. ๐Ÿšถ I didn’t get to go for my evening walk, because a project came in a seven o’clock and I ended up working until nine, mostly because it was something I hadn’t done in years, I was tired, kept making mistakes and had to back and fix my work. โœ At least working from home, I didn’t have to catch the bus half asleep then stumble back to my bedroom. ๐ŸšŒ

Woke up early this morning with a dream ๐Ÿ’ค about moving out west and getting out of the world of the east with all it’s problems. I really hate living in the city, in the east where everything is so restricted and regulated. I know there are vast places out there, even as close as parts of Western NY and Pennsylvania, and even the Midwest where people don’t spend their lives trying to figure out creative workarounds to problems created or ignored by their government. If you’ve lived in Upstate NY for any time, you know that much of life is about finding workarounds and creative solutions to everyday problems that shouldn’t exist. ๐Ÿ—ป I am just taken aback by how vast a place like Alaska, or even much of the west really is. Everything just seems so close together, masses of people so hutled together in a little space with homestead and home next to each other due to a lack of space. ๐Ÿ—ฝ I don’t believe the state religion practiced by many that there is no place in world as wonderful as New York, that our state has everything, as that’s a lie, despite what the state uncles want you believe. In a few more years.

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow between 2pm and 3pm, then a slight chance of rain after 3pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 25th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. That second day of remote work last year was pretty nice. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ’ป Other days were cloudier and colder. โ˜ The record high of 82 was set in 1990. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Working on refining that code ๐Ÿ”ข๐Ÿ”  that I posted last night for bulk encoding with the NYS Geocoder. The code I wrote is super simple and works okay for a few addresses but the geocodeAddresses endpoint can take up to 1,000 addresses per call and is much faster then calling the individual endpoint, piece by piece. Also think I want to port it to Python, as this should be simpler, and I need more practice coding in Python. ๐Ÿ I know Python is the language of the future, and I’m much too reliant on PHP which I’ve been using on and off for 20 years, except for the time I was using Perl for everything including CGI. ๐Ÿช Python has those wonderful Qt bindings and is great for scripting in QGIS and writing other graphical programs. uncles want you believe.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:26 pm with the sun in the west (262ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (269ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:03 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-southwest (255ยฐ) at an altitude of 31ยฐ from the horizon, 252,059 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:04 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 56 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 9pm, then a slight chance of snow between 9pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 31 degrees at 4am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 29th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1916. Extremely cold days are getting rarer as we head toward April. But that happens every year, and I complain about it. I just I wish I lived in a warmer climate, where winter wasn’t so harsh or long.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 45. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 55. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees. I might head north this weekend, but it might be better to wait until the snow is mostly gone at this point. I am not sure. I also want to take the truck out for a drive this week to see if I notice that squeak I heard the other day. I almost think it was because the window on the truck cap wasn’t closed tightly, and it was super windy on Wednesday. Only going to get warmer it seems as the month progresses, and maybe Good Friday into Easter will be nice and work won’t be so crazy.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 4 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ I am ready for it, and I’m even more ready for the the month of April. But first I should bundle up for my morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ It’s that time.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. Albany replaced the Pinkster Festival ๐Ÿ’ฎ with a Tulip Festival ๐ŸŒท in recent years, moving away that part of history, or more likely consolidating the days. On that day in 2020, we had rain showers with cold and cloudy weather 46 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Quiet Before Springtime

January 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Still only 38 years old. ๐ŸŽ‚ Not 40 yet. No need to rush that, as there is so much more to do. It’s a cold one. โ„ And not the kind you crack open unless your ice fishing on plywood today, because the ice is still pretty shallow on most lakes. Four weeks to Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Last night’s Wolf Moon was pretty nice, at least looking out my window at the cold landscape outside. Mostly sunny and 7 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is -14. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Thursday around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Yeah, it’s a cold morning. I guess that’s to be predicted this time of year. ๐Ÿ” We really haven’t had much cold this winter, so I guess it’s a good change. We got to have some cold to remember what the cold feels like. My apartment is nice and warm, well relatively speaking, as I turned up the thermostat a few degrees before the big chill, and honestly 7 degrees is nothing like the negative 15 we have some years. I think it got down to around 0 last night. We are though past the coldest time of year at least on average, although in recent years it seems like the cold comes later in the season. I will be very interested in seeing the updated 30-year climate normal ๐ŸŒกcome July 1st.

Decided to make to make a nice big pan of eggs up. ๐Ÿณ With ham, broccoli and Swiss cheese. I bought $76 worth of groceries, an unusually high amount for my weekly shop, so I should be set for all week. I do like those big 2-lb blocks of Swiss cheese I get at Wally World. ๐Ÿง€ I was thinking about going to Aldi’s this weekend but I needed to go out yesterday, and I wasn’t going to make a trip across the river just for groceries, even if Aldi’s is a good savings. ๐Ÿ› Walmart is better for bulk purchases though with more food and less plastic packaging. ๐ŸŽ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 19 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -14 at 7am; Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I am thinking about hiking out to Five Rivers, ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ as this morning is quite still but every once and a while a big gust of wind pops up ๐ŸŒฌ and makes me think twice about my plans. I think I will make a decision by 9 AM. I took a shower yesterday, ๐Ÿšฟ so with some clean underwear and socks ๐ŸงฆI should be ready to go. Just need to get the binoculars out of the truck and maybe pack a day sack with some water. Will definitely want gloves and a hat today though. I could drive out there, but I think I’d rather walk. I’ll probably talk about it ๐Ÿ’ฌ and decide to stay home as it’s cold. ๐Ÿ˜†

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-41ยฐ vs. 6/21). Getting close to dirty thirty, and you can actually feel the stronger sunshine this time of year as you walk outside. A six foot person will cast a 10.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:25 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (247ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:07 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:36 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:11 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 17 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 5. โ˜ƒ๏ธ There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 1 degree at 6am. Got to make sure to take the “S” off degrees. 14 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -6 at 5am; Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light north after midnight. In 2020, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1948.

Yesterday, despite getting off to a rough start, ๐Ÿ™ƒ including loosing my balance and falling flat on my face and feeling super itchy and congested, was great after I took a shower, got cleaned up and the antihistamines ๐Ÿ’Š got up to speed. I think that bright sunny morning and the cold got my mood up a lot and made me feel a lot better. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Got a bunch of groceries, got to the library and synced the blog, ๐Ÿ”ƒ and ran updates on the laptop ๐Ÿ’ป and then I’ve been working on finally porting the various parts of blog over to Gutenberg.

Yeah, I do use WordPress Internally on the Blog, โœ a piece of mass-produced widely used software. While I don’t like to drink out of the trough that everybody else has been defecating in, ๐Ÿ’ฉ WordPress has been a pretty stable piece of software with a large API that makes it’s easy to develop a custom front-end for. It’s also OpenSource, ๐Ÿ”“ which is the only kind of software use. Years ago I wrote my entire blog in PHP, then Perl then back to PHP, but it got to the point I didn’t like having to update and administer everything myself, and having access to the big API is nice. And it’s probably faster, more secure and better code base then anything I could write without a formal education in programming. Kind a big switch to move all the shortcodes over to blocks, but it’s good to learn the current API.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 7 weeks remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ It might be cold out there this morning ๐ŸŒฌ but there really is reason for hope with February just around the corner. Monday is the first, Tuesday is Ground Hog Day. Will he see his shadow? Gawd only knows, sing the Beach Boys. Goat farmers everywhere love the cover of Pet Sounds. A very experimental time in music.

As previously noted, next Saturday Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ when the sun will be setting at 5:15 pm with dusk at 5:45 pm. On that day in 2020, we had freezing rain and temperatures between 33 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 55 back in 1991.

 Ice Forming

January 28, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• ! I wonder what Sauk County’s ๐Ÿฎ most famous resident, Aldo Leopold would have to say about such things? ๐Ÿบ I bet if he was still around, he’d be saying thing that made both liberals and conservatives hate him – uncomfortable truths. Five weeks to Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ . That just seems depressing at this point. Overcast, and 23 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ I don’t understand where the sun is? Must be the Trumpster’s fault. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 7. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThe skies will clear around 9 am.

So the million dollar question, is where is the sun? ๐ŸŒฅ I thought today was supposed to be sunny and nice but cold. I want a little bit of sun so my battery bank in my truck gets a bit of a trickle charge, so I don’t lug the batteries too hard with the starter or have a sluggish start. ๐Ÿ”‹ While I don’t really expect difficulty starting, I don’t like to turn-over the engine without a good solidly charged battery. I cleaned off the truck and solar panel yesterday, so things should top off once the sun comes out. ๐Ÿ˜Ž And I’m sure that thanks to this blog post, I will get dozens of advertisements about car batteries that are on sale. ๐Ÿคฌ I probably wouldn’t have even noticed any issue had I not had all those meters all over my truck and probably some vampire loads I could disconnect but they don’t really harm anything, especially when the panel is topping off the full bank.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Northwest wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. ๐ŸŒฌ And the wind chills will get more noticeable later. Albany Police take notice, that’s 2 miles over the speed limit. ๐Ÿš“ A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1916. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1897.โ„

Going to be a cold day ๐Ÿƒ but I’m really hoping on sun โ˜€ later. I plan on going to the store ๐Ÿฌ during lunch time and then to the library during the afternoon. ๐Ÿ“š Probably won’t spend a great deal of time there because it’s kind of cold โ„ although not as bad as tomorrow. I’m going to notch the heat up a few degrees too, so things don’t get too cold inside, and the landlord asked that I keep the cabinets under the sink open so they don’t freeze. Tomorrow I’ll probably stay home except for the morning walk. Last night I skipped the walk — I was feeling kind of lazy and was concerned about slipping on the ice.

I sent in $15 in memory of Mr. Franz for the local foodbank.๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ I think it’s nice that he asked that donations be made to the local foodbank in his name.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-41.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:22 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (239ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (246ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:04 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:33 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Wolf Full ๐Ÿบ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-northeast (67ยฐ) at an altitude of 7ยฐ from the horizon, 238,139 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:08 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 21 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 6. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 18 mph breeze โ›… from the northwest with gusts up to 33mph. Today will have 9 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 3 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -14 at 6am. How negative an outlook to have. Northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1925.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 13 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ŸŒฌ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 17. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 20. โ˜€ Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. I’ll have to think about my plans. Not quite as windy this weekend, so maybe I’ll get out somewhere this weekend. Normally on these cold weekends I walk down to the library but we aren’t living in normal times. Maybe I’ll do Five Rivers, or the rail trail is fairly protected from the wind in the gorge, but I don’t like how it’s gotten so overridden by yuppies lately.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 51 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผThat means tomorrow will be 50 days, and Saturday will be seven weeks. Dully noted. Good for hauling water and heavy equipment, but stay out of the mud, so you don’t sink out of sight. Don’t ask me how I know.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› when the sun will be setting at 5:22 pm with dusk at 5:51 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 39 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1981.

The Pond
