July 29, 2016 Morning

Good morning! National Lasagna Day. Garfield would approve of this holiday, although I would think it’s best celebrates in colder weather. Partly sunny now that the fog has burnt and 71 degrees in Warren. Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. Stopping briefing at the Jake’s Rocks Overlook before heading out to Presque Isle for swimming.

Today will have a chance of showers between 11am and 2pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high of 79 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal. North wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. The record high of 97 was set in 1894. The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 1 minutes and 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 14 hours and 28 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6pm. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1968.

0.4 inch of rain expected between Saturday 2pm and Sunday 7pm. Within the next four days, a total of 0.4 inches of rain is expected.

We have some muggy weather coming up. Sunday 10am – Sunday 6pm. Maximum temperature will be 74 degrees and a maximum dew point of 66. Wednesday 5pm – Wednesday 11pm. Maximum temperature will be 81 degrees, a heat index reaching 83, and a maximum dew point of 65. Thursday 7pm – Friday 1am. Maximum temperature will be 77 degrees, a heat index reaching 77, and a maximum dew point of 65.

There are 2 weeks until First Day of Sunset Before 8 PM in Albany when the sun will be setting at 8:18 pm with dusk at 8:49 pm. The average high temperature is 81 degrees, with a record high of 99 in 1944.

Made some eggs and sausage for breakfast. Got clothes and gear out for the day and got the camp gear put away. Got firewood for the night. Put it all under tarp. Got cleaned up and after a brief stop at Jake’s Rocks, then I’m heading over to Erie, Penna. and Presque Isle State Park.

It was a nice night. I ended up staying up until well after 1 am but I had a nice campfire and it was pretty nice once the drizzle stopped. Foggy morning, as is common in the Allegheny Woods.

My laptop battery is dead, so I won’t be able to upload yesterday’s photos until tomorrow. It should get a good charge on the way out to Erie, Penna.

I listened to Hillary’s speech last night. I have to admit this is the first keynote address of the conventions I’ve stayed up until late night to until I was on vacation. I fell asleep before Trump’s speech last week, in part because I had to work the next day.

I liked a lot of what I heard but I do have serious concerns about what she had to say about guns and the second amendment. I also worry that a democratic president could lock up a lot of public lands as developed parks and monuments, taking away people’s right to camp, hunt, fish, off-road and ATV. There are some special areas that deserve wilderness protections but most forests can sustain a wide variety of public and private uses. Hillary seems like a liberal without bounds and I worry that there might not be a powerful congress to check her.

That said Trump worries me. He strikes me as a greedy business man, who doesn’t have a moral compass. I fear what he would be like if elected president, as he seems to have a temper and a poor grasp of international affairs or economics. He could blow up the world markets. I don’t think he understands the oil crisis the world faces, even if prices are low now. Nor do I think we need a president who fails to acknowledge climate change, and the pros and cons to action.

I’m a lifelong Democrat. I’m sure I’ll come home at the end, but Hillary gives me pause. I hate how the National Democratic Party and it’s surrogates have taken to attack the NRA, when they’re out there advocating for me and my fellow gun owners. I don’t think guns should be a partisan issue, as self defense is a human right, and hunting gets people out in the wilderness and creating a personal stake in protecting our environment.

July 23, 2016 Night

Good evening! Clear and 73 degrees in Burdett. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 56 degrees. It’s cooled down quite a bit but it’s still pretty warm in the Finger Lakes.

Had a nice campfire and now it’s rapidly fading away. I’m getting ready for bed shortly. The stars are decent but a little soft with high clouds. We have a Waxing Gibbous Moon in about an hour.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 63 degrees at 4am. One degrees above normal. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Maximum dew point of 59 at 1am. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tomorrow I will transfer some photos onto my phone and start posting them tomorrow. And then spend some solid time at the Watkins Glen pool. Going to bring a book, read a bit, then hop in the pool.

Good night.

July 18, 2016 9 AM Update

The heat and humidity are rapidly climbing this morning. Going to be a hot one to start the week but it will cool down as the days progress.

Today will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 2pm and 5pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 88 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Southwest wind 11 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 68 at 12pm. The record high of 100 was set in 1953. The sun will set at 8:28 pm with dusk around 9:01 pm, which is 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low of 63 degrees at 5am. One degrees above normal. West wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1875.

0.6 inch of rain expected between Monday 9am and Tuesday 1am. Within the next four days, a total of 0.6 inches of rain is expected. We have some muggy weather coming up. Monday 9am – Tuesday 12am. Maximum temperature will be 88 degrees, a heat index reaching 92, and a maximum dew point of 68. Friday 10am – Monday 12am. Maximum temperature will be 93 degrees, a heat index reaching 97, and a maximum dew point of 69.

Today is the 200th Day of Year. Only 165 days remain. In 23 weeks it will be boxing day and a party burning up all that Christmas wrapping paper.

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drives his car off a bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, dies. Don’t drive drunk, especially if you’re a prominent senator. And in 1984, there were McDonald’s massacre in San Ysidro, California: In a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. Nice people doing nice stuff.  After that, California implemented strict new gun control in that state, and there have been no more mass shootings. Har. Har. I spent too many hours listening to Cam Edwards’ 40 acres and a Fool, and his NRA News shows. He’s one of the few conservative commentators that I enjoy, because he’s quite thoughtful and honest. And he’s a hobby farmer and likes shooting guns a lot.

There are 2 weeks until First Day of August when the sun will be setting at 8:14 pm with dusk at 8:46 pm. First day back to work after my vacation. The average high temperature is 82 degrees, with a record high of 101 in 1933.

Misplaced my house keys this morning, so I’m running late for work. I caught the late bus downtown. Gave me time to fold my laundry and move photos from the weekend on my laptop. Last week was such a headache, so I’m kind of trying to avoid getting started on Monday even though I have a shit ton of work to get done today.

I’m actually kind of dreading today. Next week at this time, I’ll be sitting in the woods, getting ready to spend my day poolside. So if I survive this week, I’ll be okay. I will retire last week’s debt, and never look back or dwell on my stupidity any more.

You can’t change your day, but you can change your attitude.

April 30, 2016 Evening

Final night on my road trip to the Finger Lakes. Nice evening with the spring peepers singing their song but a bit cool and breezy. Currently 48 degrees. I ended up pulling out my heater again because that breeze is a bit chilly.

Went down to Ithaca today and explored Cayuga Inlet in my kayak. Went out briefly on Cayuga Lake but despite the relatively calm winds I don’t like to be on such a big lake. Nice paddling, did some fishing but as was the case all week, didn’t have much luck. I got to brush up on my techniques, I’m obviously doing something wrong.

Traffic sucked in Ithaca. I just hate sitting in traffic so much. I did get the replacement globe for the lantern for what that’s worth. Works great. Refilled the small portable tank and have used the lantern on and off this evening. I wanted to check out Buttermilk Falls Park but it was pretty crowded with limited parking so I decided to head back to camp.

Spent most of the evening back at camp taking things down and just kind of hanging out. Took down the tarps, moved photos to the camera, started a fire fairly early. Before bed, I want to get things put away except for the camp stove, table, and buckets. I am assuming heavy rain by morning but I still want to have coffee in the morning.

Having a good fire tonight as the ground is damp from last night and rain is coming in the next hour. Tonight might be the end of the trip but I plan to make the most of it. Soon though, I’ll take down the flag and the lights.

Rain is north of the Pennsylvania border and will be here by midnight. But so be it. Tomorrow is about heading home. All great adventures must become to an end. It’s been cold and gray for most of the trip but still got to do many fun things.

Sunrise tomorrow in Hector at 6:02 am. Good night.

April 29, 2016 Evening

Good evening folks. Happy Friday evening to all of those who worked much harder than me. 44 degrees with light drizzle but with no wind feels reasonably warm. You know it’s been a cold week this evening feels warm. That north wind blowing across the pasture onto the campsite just was so cold β€” even with the tarp blocking the northern breezes.

Ended up going to Watkins Glen and then to Newfield State Forest and ultimately Enfield Glen, to check out that gorge. Also was in Montour Falls, looking for a place to launch my kayak. I had heard that the DEC was planning to designate new campsites in Newfield State Forest near Connecticut Hill WMA, but it doesn’t look like that had happened. My truck sure is muddy from exploring Newfield State Forest.

Part of Watkins Glen is now open, from the lower parking lot to the Grand George / Lovers Lane. The rim trail is open year round. Starting to green up in parts of the gorge. Enfield Glen is also greening up, although the gorge trail there is closed although the lower gorge, the big steps, and trail over looking Lucifer Falls was open. A good amount of water was coming over Lucifer Falls.

I took a number of pictures but I need to go through them and upload them. My laptop battery is dead, but when I head out tomorrow, I’ll charge it off the inverter. Hopefully there will be some good photos.

Spring peepers are enjoying the rain and are singing their songs. I like the rain as its largely eliminated the fire risk. The DEC downgraded the fire risk to low for this part of the state, with the greater humidity and the declining wind.

Despite being relatively close to Ithaca when I was at the Enfield Glen, I decided to back track to Watkins Glen Walmart to get camp supplies including a replacement globe for the lantern. I get there and they are sold out of globes. Which is fine as I have electric lights for camp but the propane lantern doesn’t wind down the accessory battery, requiring the truck to be started. Also forgot to buy dish soap. It also was kind of out of the way. Oh, well.

Tonight the low will be 39 degrees. It looks like the rain is done for the night but it will remain cloudy through Saturday. Continued cool tomorrow with a high around 57. Rain for Sunday.

Depending on how wet things are tomorrow, I’m thinking of taking down my campsite and heading East, maybe to Long Pond, so I’m closer to home on Sunday, and because if I camp on a lake, I’m more likely to finally get out on the lake in the kayak, and spend more time fishing. Although I would like to spend more time in the Finger Lakes.

April 27, 2016 Night

Good evening. A chilly evening with temperatures around 36 degrees with a stiff northerly breeze. The low for tonight is 30 degrees but at least in Finger Lakes, that breeze will make it feel much cooler.

I got the propane tank refilled today in Auburn today and I’m damn happy about it. It a cool night. Wish I almost had warmer clothes with me but the heater is helping. I have a small campfire but it’s very small because with the breeze I’m concerned of a fire risk. I’m overly cautious with fire. Stupid mistakes mean more restrictions on our freedom. I will drown and cover the fire with mud to make sure it’s fully out by bed time. They got rain here yesterday and things are muddy but still not greened up. The campsite is free of leaves and grass around the fire pit but the pasture across the road is still mostly brown. Needless to say, the cows aren’t out yet. Always is entertaining when the herd comes over to visit on the summer.

Didn’t have any luck fishing today. I think it was two dang cold for the bullhead and other fish to be biting in Nelson Swamp. The spot I fished in Cazenovia, the new public fishing area in NY 96, looked like it had some good trout holes but the two or three times I’ve fished there, never had much luck.

Those hills just past Cazenovia on US 20 are pretty steep. I forgot how much a climb they are. Burned some serious gas climbing them with the kayak on the roof and the truck loaded down. But it’s vacation. Still a lot less energy then taking an airplane down south.

My smartphone was great for finding a place for refilling the propane tank. Just did a Google Search and it took me right to a U-Haul place to fill the tank. I was happy with the result and didn’t freeze tonight.

Checked out Montezuma. I was surprised how Montezuma is only like 15 minutes from Auburn. It was nice but the main federal refuge is kind of divided by the roar of the Thruway. I also checked out the Audubon Center and some of the state land know as the Northern Montezuma WMA. The northern parcels are a lot quiter although the state land is mostly leased farm land with some muck marshes in between. It’s kind of interesting that the best farm land is also the best land for wildlife. Indeed, the best corn regions in America are the best places for high deer populations and monster bucks. I’m not really a birder but it still was interesting to explore and visit some of rural Wayne County, including the hamlet of Savana and the muck country and farm land around there. My heart is with the rural poor, they have the best toys and the most fun.

Drove through Seneca Falls but did not stop. The country between Seneca Falls and Ovid is pretty flat dairy country, high on the hills between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Somewhat boring but still interesting.

After a while I started to disagree with Waze and started taking my own way to the National Forest, taking Lodi Center Road South. Eventually I remember where I was. Got to the National Forest, and set up camp. Gathered a small amount of wood and waited to dusk to start the fire.

Nice evening but cold. Dusk wasn’t until 8:35 pm in the Finger Lakes. Nice starry evening, that 3 watt LED bulb lights up the flag just perfectly with a nice warm color. My old flag bulb would have a colder color when the air temperature was colder. Also, while you can’t see it in the photos, the flag light always lights up the trees, which looks beautiful as the stars sit in between the tree branches, especially in the winter.

While I wish it was warmer out, still a pleasant evening next to the heater. It seems like the heater burns a lot of propane, but in my experience I burn through a 20 lb tank full every 6-7 nights camping. I’ve gone through two tank fulls since November, or about 20 nights camping. It costs about $18 to fill which means about $2.50 a night. I wouldn’t have done so much winter camping without the heater. I expect my fuel use will drop when I’m using propane for light and cooking food throughout the summer – and leaving the heater home.

Tomorrow starts out sunny with clouds creeping in later. Cool with a high around 52 degrees. Might be good for trout fishing tomorrow. I got to get some photos uploaded. Showers possible tomorrow evening, so I may hang up the tarp. Usually the tarp keeps the rain away.

I’m going to retire soon for the night. Sleep well. Dawn is at 5:33 am with sunrise is at 6:04. That’s only like seven hours away, so I probably won’t awake right away for dawn unlike today. But I do have the coffee pot ready for tomorrow, so once I get up, I’ll have coffee within 5 minutes thanks to how fast the stove brings the water to a boil in the percolator. Nice breakfast of eggs and sausage tomorrow. No rush to get going tomorrow.

I will get photos uploaded tomorrow, especially once I have a better Internet connection in Watkins Glen. Really, I should get to bed because the sun will be in my eyes before you know it.

April 16, 2016 Night

With the moon just a little past its highest location with a million stars in the sky, it is 50 degrees in Delmar. Enjoying some Corona out back listening to some music on an old set of ear buds because I managed to lose them between the dock I was fishing on earlier this evening.

In was pretty quiet on the dock this evening on the Hudson River although I kept getting hits on my line. I pulled in a half dozen Pumpkinseed Fish and tossed them back in. Caught something bigger but my headphones got caught in the fishing line and I lost him (lol?) . Very placid on the water tonight but there were a lot of people fishing down there.

It was nice at the Elm Ave Town Park earlier in the afternoon. Besides playing on my laptop down there, I spent like am hour reading down there. I am blessed that I can walk to so many great places from home and take the bus to work every day. Now that it’s finally warming up, I expect to spend a lot more evenings down at the park with a book or on the Internet.

Despite the warmer weather conditions, the evenings can still get quite chilly. Even with a long sleeve shirt, I’m not exactly feeling warm out back. It was cool on the dock after dark too. I guess I can’t be in too much of a rush for summer, as it goes by too quickly. Today, four months from now, will be opening day for the Altamont Fair. At that point, we will have reached the closing days of summer. I was looking at a Facebook friend’s photos from the Potholers, thinking how I can’t wait to get up there. Summer is delightful. The road to Powley Place doesn’t open until late May or early June but you can drive almost all the way to the Potholers before the gate.

Not heard much from the spring peepers tonight although I just heard them briefly chirp. Must be too cold for them. The low tonight is 37 degrees which still is a degree below normal. While we’ve seen warmer days recently, the nights have remained remarkably cold. A month from now, the average low will be 47 degrees meaning that most evenings will be in the mid to upper 50s. Comfortable but with lots of black flies.

Tomorrow is going to be sunny and around 70 degrees. Nice weather, 11 degrees above normal but 22 degrees below the record set in 2002. Monday will be 73 degrees. The normal high temperature one month from now is about 70. Will be warm or at least mild most of next week but some modestly chilly nights but no frost anticipated in the city through next week. Showers possible on Tuesday and next weekend may be cloudy or rainy. I may also stay in town next weekend to prepare for my road trip.

Make sure to remain hydrated and be extremely careful with fire. Humidity will remain low all weekend and with that breeze and lack of greenest in the woods means a fire risk. The humidity for most of the afternoon was under 20% producing dew points in the teens. In contrast in the summer we sometimes have dew points in the low to mid 70s on those hot and sticky days. Even exceptionally clear summer days don’t often have dew points below the mid 50s.

Tonight’s Waxing Gibbons Moon is 2/3rd full as we head towards the full moon early in the morning of Earth Day on next Friday. Moon sets around 4 AM with sunrise at 6:08 AM. First light is now well before six, starting at 5:38 AM.

It’s getting late I’m tired. Sleep well…
