October 15, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Average High is 60. Three weeks to Daylight Savings Time Ends. Cloudy with fog and 65 degrees in Williamsport. There is a east-southeast breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 57 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Today will be cloudy, with a high of 74 degrees at 4pm. 15 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1897. There was a dusting of snow in 1939.

The sun will set at 6:26 pm with dusk around 6:53 pm, which is one minute and 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 71 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 20mph. Today will have 11 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before 11pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal. Southwest wind around 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1978.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:26 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 57 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1994.

Day one of the Great Autumn Trip wasn’t particularly sunny but it was mild and in many parts the colors were pretty good. I know today we are supposed to get showers by evening, but I’m hoping that the skies will be clear for the bulk of the day. We did have a few sprinkles in the evening when I was camping at County Bridge but it wasn’t a big deal.

I didn’t get a real early start on my trip because I wanted to make sure everything was packed that I needed. I think I succeeded at that goal, as I used a check list and I left my apartment pretty darn clear.

US Route 6 hasn’t changed much. I have driven that route too many times, but it’s still a hell of a lot more scenic and interesting to drive then the Southern Tier Expressway. It’s interesting to see the industrial small towns, the paper mills, slaughterhouses, and all the industry that supports the natural gas industry. Unlike New York, rural Pennsylvania has a lot more heavy industry it seems. I think they have different tax laws and are generally friendlier to smoke stack industries. Whether or not that is a good thing is a debate point, but once can saw at least the land is being put to work. I like the gritty nature of Pennsylvania backcountry. Just like I like West Virginia and Virigina. I kind of like the landscape, it reminds me of what America had to have been like during the 1950s. Backwards maybe, but charming at the same time.

I often find myself needing to take a piss while driving. I stopped twice at rest areas and then ended up stopping at the McDonald’s and getting a milk shake so I could use their bathroom and take a piss. I think the milkshake was like $3.50 — for that price, I think I would have been better off to go to ice cream parlor or if I was in New York State, Stewarts.

I was going to stop at Stewarts and buy some firewood but I passed the last Stewarts on my way down to Pennsylvania. So I ended up skipping that and was able to find some firewood around the campground, but the wood I found was pretty damp and punky, but after a good smoke show, some paper and plastic from he campground trash cans, I had a decent fire going by around 7:30 PM. Once the whole mess got started it, wasn’t that bad. I didn’t need the fire for the warmth — it was well in the mid-60s until after in later in the evening, when I put my beloved orange hoodie. I expect I will be wearing that for most of the rest of the week, especially after the front comes through.

First time camping at County Bridge Campground, which is four miles from Morris Run, which like many Northern Pennsylvania villages is little more then a grouping of old houses and hunting camps from some historical era. Blossburg is the next village of any size, but it’s just an exit on US 15 aka future Interstate 99. It’s a fifteen campsite campground, well spread out. There was somebody camping on the other side of the campground in an RV, but they were a good ways away. It was pretty under the maple trees when the sun was open. Lots of nice color. The Morris Run made a nice background for sleeping at night even if it made me kept thinking about taking a piss.

So far the trip has been going well bar the firewood issue I’m ready for the rain showers, especially if I camp at Ohiopyle State Park, where they have hot showers. I was surprised that the none of the Park Service Campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway have showers, even though they charge $20 a night. Well then I probably just overnight at North Creek Campground which is half the price, usually empty on weekdays and doesn’t have showers. Maybe on my trip back home, I should find out if there is a “Modern” campground in Pennsylvania that I can stay at for $20 that includes showers. Maybe I could come farther east and camp on the way back. I’ll figure out at the week progresses. Heck, it tempts me to do Shenandoah National Park, as they have coin showers at one of the campground. But I don’t know I’ve done that before, and I’m not that interested in revisiting much of my 2015 trip. I want to see new things on this trip, and the problem with Skyline Drive is it kind of locks you away from seeing things down in the valley. But on the other hand, it had so many nice views and the road was well maintained.

Discovered last night that I left my card reader home with the second microSD card. Not a big deal but I want to get another microSD card so I can save my trip and pull stuff off it each night. Sometimes the adapter that comes with the SD card can ean be tempermental, but hopefully it will work or I will have to buy another SD card reader. Not expensive but I am annoyed because I thought about this before leaving but did not act. Walmart should save my ass though with this. I plan to stop this morning.

Today I plan to drive down through Mid-State Pennsylvania along I-99 and US 15/US 220 to Ohiopyle State Park, stopping at the Flight 92 Memorial, which is located off the old Lincoln Highway. Ohiopyle looks quite scenic, at least for the overlook. I know we are getting some rain this evening, but I’m hoping it won’t be too bad.

The Appalachian Throughway is absolutely beautiful between Blossburg. I will be posting more photos and videos later on from that part of the trip.

Coleman Ovens Are Great

This past weekend I had a few accidental experiments with my Coleman Folding Oven.

One, I left the Coleman Oven cooking muffins on the oven for over an hour, while I was pitching a tarp and gathering firewood. The muffins, while well done, were not black on the bottom, but instead were very well cooked throughout. No blackening on the bottom of the muffin. I am very impressed on how even the heating is on the Coleman Oven, although I think a lot of that has to do with the three fire brick I always stick in the bottom of the Colemen oven when cooking.

 Coleman Oven

The second experiment was I ran out of propane, so I ended up cooking with the Coleman oven on some charcoal, on a grill over the campfire. It works equally well for cooking muffins. Things were evenly cooked, even if they were somewhat more smoky then the when cooked on the gas stove. Not at all black on the bottom side, very evenly cooked. Again, I was very happy with the results.

Apparently those Coleman Ovens have been around for a long time. I saw a similar oven box when I toured the LePorto house at the French Azul outside of Tonawanda, PA. They would put them on top of a wood stove for baking. Indeed, I could see using a Coleman Folding oven when I eventually live off grid, rather then a big oven, just as a way to save money and space over a full gas range, yet do the cooking that I need to enjoy life.

The Faucet

So I was pretty pissed to see my landlord removed the bathtub faucet from my shower when he fixed the leaky bathtub faucet. Not because I ever took baths, but that was how I filled my water containers for camping. As he ended up replacing the entire faucet and ripping out the wall while making the he also installed a cheap waterproof wall over the sheet rock, that doesn’t match the rest of the shower stall which is yellowed plastic. I guess it doesn’t really matter, as the rest of my low rent apartment is falling apart, and honestly I’d rather pay less in rent then have a fancy bathroom. I did figure out how to use my kitchen sink to fill the water container. I’m not sure if my landlord would be happy to find I’m taking 3 or 6 gallons of water each time I camp, but I figure it’s probably a net savings to him, because I’m not flushing toilets or taking a shower while I camp. My lease (which has long been on an auto-extender clause) bans outdoor watering and car washing, but is silent on filling water jugs for camping.

I know a lot of my colleagues have much nicer apartments then I do. But I like my location and like how it’s cheap. I can get free Internet by walking down to the library or the park, I have public transit to take to work, and plenty of places to walk to get some exercise. While things are wearing out in my apartment due to age and somewhat my neglect after living there for ten years, renters don’t normally fix up their buildings themselves, and landlords only fix what is critical when a tenant resides there. No need to nice appearances when you not renting to a new person. I’m fine where I live, and in recent years have gotten the mold under control by using excessive amounts of concentrated bleach.

Dripping shower faucet turned out to be a bigger project than landlord expected

Some people dream of owning a house with marble kitchen tops, a big screen television, and hardwood floors. I’d rather own a house where I can burn my own trash, heat with wood I harvested, and power things with wind, sun, or micro-hydro. I also don’t mind firing up a gas powered generator – I’d rather burn gasoline that I bought for actual electricity used then send a check to an invisible entity plus a bunch of connection fees, that are bulk of my bill. Raise animals for meat, hunt and shoot on my own land. Sending your garbage to landfills and expensive trash fees suck. I hate sending my check every month to some distant utility, where they burn large quantities of natural gas, coal, and nuclear material to keep the lights on. I do pay a surcharge for so-called green energy like wind and small-scale hydro, but ultimately I recognize it all comes from the same big industrial pool known as the grid. I do support greening the grid and fixing urban problems like increasing recycling – but in the mean time, I’m all for making my own life more sustainable and less reliant on the urban systems.

My apartment is just a cheap place to stay when I’m making money in the city. I rarely spend time there except to sleep at night. I keep investing and saving money that will ultimately be used for buying land, and an inexpensive cabin or micro-home, somewhere that is low tax and regulation. I really prefer to spend my weekends in the wilderness, camping by a fire, listening to the birds and the wind. I like the colorful lights and music, and just enjoying those long summer nights – or the cold winter nights which seem to be eight months out of the year. I look at camping as my temporary home, a place where I can practice for my future to be.

July 25, 2017 Night

Good evening! Fog, light drizzle and 59 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest outside of Watkins Glen. Calm wind. The dew point is 57 degrees. Yucky weather for what is supposed to be the warmest time of summer.

Today was pretty cool and damp. I went down to Walmart in Watkins Glen to pick up some supplies, especially ice and then to the public library to connect with the Wi-Fi. Unfortunately though they have my blog hosting company blocked there so I couldn’t update or even view my blog from there. I was planning on going to the Watkins Glen State Park in the afternoon to hit up the pool but it started to rain again so I returned to camp.

Back at camp I listened to some podcasts and cooked a late lunch slash early dinner, then hiked back to Foster Pond then over around Potamac Ponds. The trails are such a muddy mess that I had to keep turning back. I really needed to stretch my legs and while everything was wet and misty I was still glad to get out. I did have to change once I got back to camp.

Returned to camp maybe around seven gathered some firewood and being totally soaked  I decided to get dry clothes and retire early to the inside the truck cap. It is cozy under the blankets. Reviewed my dash cam for videos worth saving and uploading of my trip. While I have done some Instagram photos and Facebook Live Videos, I’ve not used my regular camera much to do videos or higher quality photos because the weather lately has been so wet and crappy.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 57 degrees at 3am. Five degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 57 at 10pm. Calm wind. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1976.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon. The First Quarter Moon is on Sunday night with mostly cloudy skies. The Strugeon Moon is on Monday, August 7th. The sun will rise at 5:53 am with the first light at 5:21 am, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 57 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 74 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. South wind 5 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had sunny skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1963.

Should be a nice day tomorrow once the fog burns off. I am planning on visiting Taughannock State Park tomorrow and swimming in Cayuga Lake. Probably be frigid. I will visit the waterfall and gorge and will put the kayak back on the roof of the truck so I can paddle a little on the lake and maybe do some fishing. Should be a nice day after so many crappy ones weather wise lately.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running nine degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 55 at 12pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

I am thinking about dropping my plans for Pennsylvania for the second half of the week to spend more time in the Finger Lakes. I always enjoy seeing Pennsylvania and Presque Isle is fun, but I’ve lost a lot of time in the Finger Lakes with the really crappy weather. I would still like to swim in Enfield Glen, if only once this year, should the rains stop and water quality be good enough for them to reopen the beach. It is tough for them to control the water conditions there like they can with a swimming pool. Definitely also want to spend more time in the sun at the Watkins Glen pool and get exotic ice cream at the Glen Dairy bar – but not on a cold and rainy day.

In four weeks on August 22 the sun will be setting at 7:56 pm, which is 37 minutes and 7 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 73 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 1916.

Looking ahead, August 1st is Next Tuesday, Altamont Fair Opens is in 3 weeks, More Night Then Day in Albany is in 2 months, Friday the 13th (October) is in 10 weeks, Election Day 2017 is in 15 weeks, Average High is 40 is in 16 weeks, Christmas is in 5 months, Election Day 2018 is in 67 weeks and Election Day 2020 is in 171 weeks.

July 21, 2017 Evening

Happy Weekend! Once I get off the bus and pack the coolers in the back of my truck, I’ll be off for my first day of vacation. Mostly sunny and 87 degrees in Albany. There is a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. The dew point is 64 degrees.

It’s summer and there is virtually no traffic heading out to Delmar but I’m sure I would have hit traffic getting onto the Thruway. That said leaving home 15 minutes later and skipping the Thruway I should make it out to Brookfield well before dark so I can gather some firewood for a small campfire.

The sun will set at 8:26 pm with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 51 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly clear conditions and 79 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 63 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. West wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light southwest after midnight. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon. The New Moon will be tomorrow with a chance of showers. The Strugeon Moon is on Monday, August 7th. The sun will rise at 5:37 am with the first light at 5:04 am, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 48 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, with a high of 85 degrees at 5pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 9am. West wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 94 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Light and variable wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

In four weeks on August 18 the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm, which is 34 minutes and 43 seconds earlier then today. In 2016 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 86 and 64 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 1913.

Looking ahead, September 1st is in 6 weeks, Average High is 70 is in 2 months and Autumn Begins is in 9 weeks. I better enjoy my summer vacation because autumn is just around the corner.

See y’all later. I should have decent smartphone reception where I am most of the week so I will continue post interesting photos of my trip and various updates but I’ve somewhat fallen behind on maps, so many may be classic maps from the past few years. Come August though I’ll try to be back in the map business once again.

Enjoy your weekend! Happy dance.

July 11, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to August 1st. I’m not sure I’m ready to be thinking about July coming to an end but it will be over before you know it. Mostly cloudy and 74 degrees in City of Albany. There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 7 pm.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 4pm. Hazy, hot and humid.  Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1936.

The sun will set at 8:33 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 80 degrees. The dew point will be 69 degrees. So muggy even the muggers will be complaining. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes Lof daytime, an increase of one minute and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11pm. Patchy fog after 11pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1978.

On this day in 1962, live television was transmitted for the first time across the Atlantic Ocean. Seems odd nowadays, when so much commerence is global and we can access a server next door as quickly as in France.

The weekend forecast has improved once again, and I’m still leaning towards going up to White House, swimming in Wells or Speculator, and paddling the flat water of Sacandaga River north of Auger Falls. I haven’t camped at White House in a long time and as far as I know it’s still open despite the wilderness advocates insisting it be closed. I’ll have to make sure to hang up extra lights and flags, and eat burgers on Styrofoam to celebrate camping in the wilderness. Because I burn my garbage, I know the Styrofoam won’t be sitting in The landfill for a million years. I love fire and burning shit.

A week from Saturday I will be out in the Finger Lakes on my summer vacation. I’m toying with the idea of leaving on Friday and driving out to Madison County and from there heading down to the Finger Lakes early Saturday so I can get camp set up and hit the Watkins Glen pool until seven. Need to work on my tan more.

Finally got to bed early last night. It was a nice evening sleeping although by morning it was humid so I was glad I left the Dan running on low even if it is a bit power hungry. I hate wasting kilowatts or even watts as I eventually plan to live off the grid.

I got my new phone but I’m unwilling to start using it before I get the case and screen protector. It should work well but I noticed that the FM radio doesn’t work through the Bluetooth connection but that’s fine because I can just use a wired connection for that purpose. All phones require something to be plugged in the headphone port to use as an antenna at any rate. I also ordered an inexpensive USB OTG Cable so I can connect a keyboard or a flash drive to the phone while camping to upload photos or for blogging. I think it cost only $2. Very simple device.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until August 1st when the sun will be setting at 8:14 pm with dusk at 8:46 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, drizzle, patches of fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 74 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 101 back in 1933.
