How Much Ice Has Greenland Lost to Climate Change? – The Atlantic

Suffice it to say: The Greenland Ice Sheet, which contains enough water to refill the Great Lakes 115 times over, is very large. And it is also falling apart.

A new study finds that the Greenland Ice Sheet added a quarter inch of water to global sea levels in just the past eight years. The research, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, covers nearly 20 years previously not included in our detailed understanding of the troubled Greenland Ice Sheet. It finds that climate change has already bled trillions of tons of ice from the island reservoir, with more loss than expected coming from its unstable northern half.

It’s Awesome that Tractor Supply Sells Propane by the Gallon

One of the best things I’ve discovered is that most Tractor Supply locations sell propane by the gallon. This means, any time I am heading out for a weekend, and I notice the tank is getting a bit light, I will top off the tank so I don’t risk running out of propane. Bulk propane refilled in a 20 lb tank is affordable, and the tanks last for decade, so that means a lot of cooking, light, and heat up at camp without a lot of waste.

April 24, 2019 11 AM Update

Good morning! What day is it? Get-Away Hump Day, of course. Heading up North for probably two days camping once work is done today. Next Wednesday is May πŸ•Š. Mostly cloudy and 52 degrees in Albany. ☁ Breezy, ️18 mph breeze from the west 🌬 with gusts up to 30 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

Today will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 58 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 15th. Breezy, with a west wind 18 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.❄

The sun will set at 7:47 pm with dusk around 8:17 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 54 degrees. Breezy, 17 mph breeze β›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 28mph. Today will have 13 hours and 49 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 38 seconds over yesterday.

So I am packed and planning to leave for the Adirondacks after work today. β›° Tomorrow looks absolutely beautiful, not so much so for Friday. But I’ll take a what I can get. The forecast earlier in the week looked quite nice, but it has slipped down hill.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear ☁, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light west after midnight. Going to be fairly cool, especially up north, but I have my heater with me if I need to warm up in the morning. But definitely warmer then camping in the Finger Lakes last December. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 23 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 68 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. Light and variable wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2009. .3 inches of snow fell back in 1928.❄

I think I will have a great day hiking and camping tomorrow, plus two nights camping, πŸ• maybe do some plinking with the .22 tomorrow around camp, followed by fishing on Friday.Β  Maybe spend some time around camp reading, listening to music and just relaxing. As turkey season πŸ¦ƒ ain’t open for another week, I should have the wilderness all to my own, bar maybe one of the forest rangers stopping in to say hi tomorrow, if I’m still at camp and not hiking at that point.

Β I am thinking about coming home on Friday morning, 🏠if it’s going to be as wet as they say. I have certainly spent a lot of nights in the wilderness when we’ve gotten in an inch of rain, and I would be willing to stay through the weekend, if it wasn’t expected to be so cold and generally not that great on Saturday. I have the heater and tarps, but I don’t want to be curled up next to the heater all day Friday, dealing with tarps that are getting saturated and dripping.β˜” I’ve just spent too many very wet days camping, and it’s fun but not that much fun, especially in the spring.

But still, it’s nice to get away for a few days. I have Friday off from work, so I can take things down and take a nice easy drive back. If it’s not raining too hard, I’ll do some fishing. Saturday, I might do a hike locally, maybe I’ll drive out somewhere or maybe just walk to Five Rivers for more nature study. 🐦 I don’t know, with the breeze and dampness it’s going to be cold on Saturday, even if it’s sunny. After an inch of rain everything is going to be all mud. I bought some inexpensive farm boots yesterday, but I still don’t want to be in really sticky nasty mud if I can avoid it. I really have enough clothes and food for four days in the wilderness, but I doubt will be up there the whole time.πŸ”Š

As previously noted, next Wednesday is May πŸ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.

In four weeks on May 22 the sun will be setting at 8:17 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 13 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 63 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 71 and 49 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1911.

Looking ahead, May πŸ•Š is in 1 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts πŸ•οΈ is a month away, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 6 weeks, Latest Sunset πŸŒ† is in 2 months, Primary Day πŸ—³οΈ is in 9 weeks, Altamont Fair Opens 🎑 is in 16 weeks, State Fair Opens 🎑 is in 17 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️ is in 4 months, September 11th πŸ‡Έ is in 20 weeks, More Night then Day 🌌 is in 22 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 πŸ‘΄πŸ» is in 91 weeks.
