A simple lead acid battery, connected to a battery charger and an inverter, and some planning can make a decent back up for light energy use when your power goes out. And maybe it's a gateway drug to off-grid living or something like that. While I knew most of the stuff in this video, still Technology Connections does  a good job of explaining basic lead-acid battery technology.
