Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA

The Elm Avenue Park and Ride offers a convenient way to get downtown without the hassles of urban traffic. Located next to the Elm Avenue Park at the end of the Delmar Bypass (NY 32), it is serviced by several buses that will quickly transport you downtown.

There is a new, expanded schedule for the Elm Avenue Park and Ride. 5 morning buses depart there, 5 buses in the afternoon plus a mid-day bus schedule. Very convenient. http://www.cdta.org/uploads/Route719.pdf

August 17, 2016 9 AM Update

On this day in 1977, the Soviet icebreaker Arktika becomes the first surface ship to reach the North Pole.Β Part of it was they built stronger ice breakers and it was a warmer summer, part of it was climate change.

And in 1982, the first Compact Discs (CDs) are released to the public in Germany. Happy sterile listening, although at least you could play the same song over and over again, without wearing out the record grooves.

August 17, 2016 8 AM Update

Rapidly clearing this morning. Increasing blue skies and warming up slightly with a low dew point. Nice breeze.  After all the hazy, hot and humid weather lately this is quite nice for a change. Going to stay nice through the weekend it would appear.

Nice walk down to the bus stop without the gross humidity of last night. I literally got soaked from the humidity on my evening walk. I really should have taken a shower before bed, I was sweaty. Only one other person on the bus today.

Farmers Market day at the Empire State Plaza today. I really should stop by and get some good eats. This time of year, the farmers market is more like a well stocked grocery store with all the good eats.

Tomorrow is Thursday. The weekend is rapidly approaching

August 16, 2016 8 AM Update

Today is kind of a gray one as I head downtown on the express bus. But it’s a Tuesday and the weekend still looks pretty good .

I always enjoy taking the express bus even if it means a walk. Walking is healthy activity and the reality is it missed my evening walk because I got busy doing some cooking and working on some work stuff.

I didn’t end up buying that rifle but after talking to friends and researching further I know what I want. There will be more sales before November. Money only grows or at least accumulates if you don’t spend it.

Cut my thumb somehow walking down to the bus. I don’t know how as the air is pretty damp. I must have just hit something. It’s not too bad.

Looking forward to the weekend. It should be a nice one.

July 13, 2016 8 AM Update

While it’s still fairly nice out this morning, you can definitely feel it warming up. Mostly sunny and 73 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is 66 degrees.

Hot and sticky day on tap. We will have isolated showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal. South wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 69 at 4pm. The record high of 96 was set in 1894. We may come close to breaking a 120 year old record today. The sun will set at 8:31 pm with dusk around 9:05 pm, which is 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 1 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have some scattered showers and thunderstorms from the heat and humidity, mainly between 7pm and 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 71 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. Going to be a muggy night. The record low of 49 occurred back in 1940.

0.6 inch of rain expected between Wednesday 2pm and Friday 7am. Within the next four days, a total of 0.6 inches of rain is expected, mostly from thunderstorms.

Starting now, we have some really muggy weather. Wednesday 8am – Friday 2pm. Maximum temperature will be 90 degrees, a heat index reaching 96, and a maximum dew point of 73. Friday 8pm – Friday 11pm. Maximum temperature will be 83 degrees, a heat index reaching 85, and a maximum dew point of 65. The muggers take a break for the weekend (union rules) but return for Monday night.  Monday 8pm – Tuesday 12am. Maximum temperature will be 80 degrees, a heat index reaching 82, and a maximum dew point of 65. Tuesday 5am – Tuesday 9am. Maximum temperature will be 74 degrees and a maximum dew point of 65.

On this day in 1977, the Great 1977 New York City Blackout begins, plunging New York into 24 hours of darkness, chaos, and crime. It really was a dark time in the bankrupt city. In contrast, 12 years earlier the Blackout of 1965 was a peaceful inconvenience for many.

There are 1 weeks until Ugly Truck Day when the sun will be setting at 8:26 pm with dusk at 8:59 pm. The average high temperature is 83 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1991. Pretty much like today. You probably will want to recharge the air conditioning on your ugly truck before then, so you can be cruising in comfort, if not style.

Today I have my eye appointment for my eye check up. It will be nice to be able to see. Hopefully the eye doctor will be well air conditioned. I may get to leave work early but it’s possible that I will have to head back to work after my eye appointment.

Some minor traffic delays heading downtown. Both on the South Mall Arterial and Southern Boulevard. I don’t know the causes but so be it. It doesn’t seem that bad.

Still looking forward to the weekend but I don’t know if I will be stuck in town. But I’m still looking forward to the Mine Kill State Park and the always scenic drive out there. Hopefully if I do have to go to work, I’ll be able to get out early on Saturday.

Well, Moovit says I’m two stops away from work, so I better finish up my post. Enjoy this Hazy, Crazy Day of Summer. And stay cool.

July 11, 2016 8 AM Update

We had more sun and then it started to disappear.  Mostly cloudy and 64 degrees in Delmar. There is a north breeze at 7 mph. The clouds won’t last.  The dew point continues to drop and is 56 degrees.

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal. North wind around 7 mph. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. Dropping throughout the day, with low humidity comfortable conditions expected. The record high of 98 was set in 1936. The sun will set at 8:33 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal. Calm wind. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6am. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1978.

On this day in 1962, live television was transmitted for the first time across the Atlantic Ocean. Seems odd nowadays, when so much commerence is global and we can access a server next door as quickly as in France.

There are 3 weeks until First Day of August when the sun will be setting at 8:14 pm with dusk at 8:46 pm. The average high temperature is 82 degrees, with a record high of 101 in 1933.

The second half of the week is expected to be quite hazy, hot, and humid. Dew points expected to reach 71 with heat indexes into the 90s. Fortunately, I’ll be in an air conditioned office all week. The weekend in contrast is expected to be sunny and less humid.

I’m thinking about going to the Mine Kill State Park pool this weekend and maybe camping at Burnt Rossman State Forest if the weather is nice. I’m a bit hesitant if I’m heading to vacation the following week but I also realize that summer is a fairly limited season and it will be fall before you know it. And those pools usually close the last day of August.

July 5, 2016 8 AM Update

Back in the day, we used to walk one mile to the express bus downtown. And it was incredibly hot and sticky and the express bus lacked air conditioning but at least when we got moving on the expressway it cooled down.

Currently, cloudy  and 71 degrees in Delmar. There is a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 66 degrees. Pretty sticky out there, especially after a mile walk.

Today will be isolated showers before 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Six degrees above normal. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The record high of 99 was set in 1919.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:35 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 19 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 11 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 58 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 63. Two degrees above normal. West wind 5 to 8 mph. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1962.

On this day in 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton imposes trade and economic sanctions against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. About two years and nine weeks later, they would respond by hijacking some airplanes and in response they’d step up security so I couldn’t go back and explore my favorite farm garbage dump back on the city Alcove Reservoir property with potentially getting caught by security.

There are 6 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:24 pm. The average high temperature is 81 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1936.

This weekend, I’m probably staying in town for the weekend, because I’m getting tired of packing and unpacking camping gear. But we will see. I would like to get to Mine Kill State Park at some point and enjoy the pool. But I also need to get some replacement handles for my kayak, which wear out because I use them to tie down to the truck and vibration seems to wear them out every three years or so. The following weekend I’ll be out in Central NY for work and I might camp, depending on what my schedule looks  like. We will see.

Remember the weekend is only four days away. Have a great one!
