Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Costco πŸ›’

The other day I was on a work conference call – actually a Zoom meeting and there were people praising Costcos and saying how they traveled to Massachusetts the past week to shop there. Honestly, I can’t imagine traveling to shop at a Big Box grocery store during a pandemic but I guess different people have different values.

I had to puke in my mouth a little bit, off camera, as I’ve been opposed to the Rapp Road development which includes a Costco and a large apartment and townhouse complex in undeveloped woods right next to the butterfly corridor. Honestly I don’t care much about the Costco part of the proposal – it’s mostly in an abandoned residential neighborhood – but I do like many of my fellow environmentalists worry about the apartment complex. The Costcos is still a bit problematic in the sense their building a gas station over a sandy sole source acquifer so all gas leaks and spills will almost immediately mix into ground water and the proposal still demolishes some remaining pitch pine and dunes, that are easily restored to Pine Bush.

So it probably shouldn’t move forward or we should at least demand a tough mitigation to protect as much of the remaining Pine Bush as possible. So much had been lost in fifty years, even more is disappointing a few acres at a time – becoming harder and harder to sustain especially as climate change makes the Pine Bush with less late winter snow even harder to breed butterflies and other native species.

I’ve heard Costco in other parts of the nation are perpetually crowded. You have to think yuck during the pandemic. I can’t imagine shopping at any big box in the near future. A few times during the pandemic I’ve been to Walmart to get things not at Aldi’s, but I’ve finally drawn a line in the sand and said no more. It’s not worth getting Coronavirus to get something I can order online and get in a few days. I dont mind discount groceries and stores that have a limited selection but do we need such massive temples of consumerism?

Old Military Road

Walking along Old Military Road in Miami Flats was pleasant, but I was disappointed that I didn't see more birds or wildlife along the way.

Belt tightening🐍

Yesterday I drilled two more additional holes in my belt.

It was getting kind loose again. I can say it was do to the belt stretching but that’s kind of a lie. My jeans and boxers are too big for me but at least they aren’t slipping down like they were before I tightened my belt.

I’m actually amazed that I keep losing weight and everybody around me is getting fatter. Even the homesteaders and farmers I follow online seem now to be quite chubby. I thought I would loose a few pounds but it wouldn’t add up to much.

It’s not like I’m eating less, if anything I’m eating more and drinking less water. Some meals I eat way too big of portions. And I snack a lot. Yet, what I’m eating makes all the difference. Fill up on spinach or kale, and there isn’t many calories or fat involved. Snack on apples and bananas and you’ll get a jolt of sugar but also with the fiber it lasts a long time.

In many ways I’m fortunate to live alone and choose what I put in my body. I go out and occasionally do social events and there I’m a miserable health grouch. But most of the time, what I put in my shopping cart is ultimately what I put in my mouth.

It has taken time to learn what good healthy adult food tastes like. But once you get away from the sugar, fat and salt diet you really get back your sense of taste. Natural, largely unadulterated by industry and cooking foods taste pretty darn good.
