Speeding & Speed Limits Index & Overview

It is perfectly legal in New York State, and sensible to drive below the speed limit. You have every right to drive at 55 MPH or 60 MPH on the Thruway or any other 65 MPH road in New York State if you are in the right lane.

"The maximum speed limit is just that, the maximum speed at which drivers can lawfully operate their motor vehicles. This does not mean that drivers must drive at this speed limit; they can, and should in many cases, drive at speeds less than the maximum speed limit, such as when the pavement is wet or icy. However, driving too slowly can also be dangerous. Some Interstate highways have posted minimum speeds, usually 40 mph. In general, it is safest to drive with the flow of traffic unless that flow is exceeding the speed limit. On Interstate and other limited-access highways drivers should use the right lanes when possible to help prevent congestion and acts of aggressive driving."

By reducing your speed, you will save gas, have more time to enjoy the scenery, have to pass fewer cars, and will be able to use your cruise control. Often reducing your speed to 55 MPH or 60 MPH, you will only add minutes to an multi-hour trip.

The Phil G. McDonald Bridge in West Virginia is one of the most unusual big bridges for it's time period. It's 700 feet above the Glade Creek.

Built in 1987-88, it's the world's highest truss bridge, and America's largest fracture critical bridge, that should a single truss or gusset plate fail, the entire bridge could plunge the height of 70 stories into the ravine. The bridge is carefully inspected on a yearly basis to avoid failure. Generally, since 1970, new large truss bridges are not constructed, ever since the lessons learned from 1967 Silver Bridge Disaster.
