Taken on Sunday November 29, 2020 at Piseco-Powley Road.40 days left in the year, three days until I head up north to the Adirondacks. Heat is finally turned on for a while though this time of year I find it overrides and is uncomfortably warm.
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly clear and 16 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Cold start to the morning. Free car battery and heat test. My heat was back on for a while last night until it got too uncomfortably warm inside. Regardless, things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. π‘οΈ
To ride in or not, π² that’s the question π. It’s cold out but I like saving the buck thirty πͺ and the exercise – it’s better than walking 45 minutes. I want to get in early though so I have time to walk πΆ the Plaza as this evening looks like crap. Going to rain tonight with wet snow. π¨ β Got books π out of the library to read tonight and when I’m camping π in the Adirondacks this weekend.
Today will have increasing clouds β, with a high of 40 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 9th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 9 to 14 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. 0.8 inches of snow fell back in 1937.β
Two π loaves of bread are baked, had a nice breakfast of eggs π₯ and all the fixings, along with some fresh bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. π³ Has given me a lot of energy β‘ plus that cold really wakes you up. π² But I’m ready for the day to come. But first eighteen flights of stairs to climb – actually one less than that because you start at number one floor not counting the stairs in the LOB.
Solar noon π is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 27.5Β° from the due south horizon (-43.3Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (236Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 15 seconds with dusk around 4:59 pm, which is 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. π At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous π Moon in the southeast (139Β°) at an altitude of 31Β° from the horizon, 226,594 miles away. π The best time to look at the stars is after 5:35 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies β and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 14 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 52 seconds over today.
The weather might be shit by the end of day π© but the way I look at it I’ll toss my bicycle π² on the bus π and whatever. Still saved the bus fare πͺand got some better exercise then walking πΆ though my goal π₯ is to get in 10k steps in if possible without an evening walk. π£
Tonight will rain, snow, and sleet before 11pm, then rain, possibly mixed with snow between 11pm and midnight, then rain after midnight. π§ Low of 36 degrees at 9pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 6th. Southeast wind 14 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 2018.
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 8 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. π Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 39. Typical average high for the weekend is 45 degrees. Going to be cold β up north but I’ll dress warmly and spring the propane heater. I should be good on propane gas for the weekend. β¨ Planning to take off Monday so I have four days and three nights away from it all off the grid. Leave Friday which is a state or at least agency holiday.
Bar owners will note that there are 2 weeks until Repeal of Prohibition Day πΊ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. Might be able to get good specials that day not that I drink much anymore. It’s not real healthy. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 44 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 2001.
To read the IT press in the early 1990s, those far-off days just before the Web was the go-to source of information, was to be fed a rosy vision of a future in which desktop and server computing would be a unified and powerful experience. IBM and Apple would unite behind a new OS called Taligent that would run Apple, OS/2, and 16-bit Windows code, and coupled with UNIX-based servers, this would revolutionise computing.
We know that this never quite happened as prophesied, but along the way, it did deliver a few forgotten but interesting technologies. [Old VCR] has a look at one of these, a feature of the IBM AIX, which shipped with mid-90s Apple servers as a result of this partnership, in which Mac client applications could have server-side components, allowing them to offload computing power to the more powerful machine.
