Why More Climate Change Means More Oil Spills

Why More Climate Change Means More Oil Spills

More than 2,000 reports of waterway pollution, including oil and chemical spills, and a segment of broken pipeline have been found in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Experts say this is a sign of the growing untenability of the miles of offshore oil and gas infrastructure that the US operates.

In the two weeks since Ida ravaged Louisiana, leaving more than one million residents without power, divers have located large volumes of oil leaked underwater from infrastructure destroyed in the Category 4 hurricane’s wake. Nearly 90 percent of the region’s oil and gas production shuttered following the storm, and, as of Tuesday, more than 100 production platforms were decommissioned, in what some predict might be the worst-ever recorded damage to the region’s fossil fuel sector by a natural disaster

For an invasive pest, the spotted lanternfly is a beautifully colorful insect with delicately spotted wings that unfold to reveal a striking pastiche of red, white and black. But don’t be fooled—this planthopper can be destructive, feeding on nutrients sucked from inside plants and leaving behind sugary honeydew that later turns to sooty black mold.

The insect is native to Asia, where it traditionally feeds on the tree species Ailanthus altissima, commonly called tree of heaven. Insect predators keep the spotted lanternfly’s population in check in its native habitat, but in recent years, the species has begun to spread worldwide, likely through global trade. After being found in Pennsylvania in 2014, the damaging pest has now been spotted in nearly a dozen other states.

Weather Update – October 6, 2021

The weekend doesn’t look perfect but I still want to get out of town 🌥

I haven’t taken Friday off yet officially but I rescheduled my Friday meetings 💼 so I can probably take off that day if I want. Been a few weeks since I’ve gotten out of town. I’m thinking Schoharie but I’m not totally set on that – I wouldn’t mind hiking Pillsbury and in the West Canada Lakes wilderness although I expect the leaves at this point to be well past peak up north.

Good Morning – October 6, 2021

Good morning! What day is it? Go chase that money on Wednesday. 💰

After all it’s not a pay week, and I am totally broke, but so be it. I look up at that Dan Halloran quote about the f-king money, next to that old Shelly Silver mailer, the NRA Stand and Fight bumper sticker, a Don’t Tread on Me Flag, and a I Fish New York sticker. I can smell the silage on air, and look forward to the days to come. I raise my nose and go MOO! 🐮

Cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

I can complain a lot about life these days, but it’s good making good money and producing good quality products 📝 for the clients. I feel like I have mastered a lot in my career after fourteen years and I get better every day. I’m a bit of a rebel at times but I’ve always looked positively towards people like Phil Ochs and Malvina Reynolds. To say I’m a right-winger is an exaggeration, I’m more libertarian and a hick then anything else. I voted for Barack Obama twice even though I am good supporter of the 2nd amendment and rural freedom. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have good bus services or public libraries.

Time goes by so quickly. At one level it makes me so high ☺ thinking how fast the past decade has come and gone. Big Red turns a decade old 🎂 next week which seems like it has come and gone so quickly. I figure the next decade is my prime earning years and if I work hard and save the best is yet to come. Big Red didn’t get rusty overnight, it’s just a lot of time has disappeared. I am looking forward to the best earning years and eventually owning my own land. 🏘

Been doing a lot of study and learning about matplotlib and graphics libraries in python. 📊 There is a lot of power in being able to make high quality graphs and images programmatically in the era of social media. My goal isn’t to become a super data scientist but develop useful skills and automate the boring 💤 parts of life. Really, I think being able to create good quality graphics is a vital skill, and I am really starting to master the matplotlib and similar libraries.

More closer to today, 🚍 I’m taking the express bus to work and the hybrid with the aggressive regen rides nicely on the Delmar bypass with nice smooth acceleration and breaking. If take off Friday than tomorrow will be the last day I’m heading downtown and it will mean I won’t have to go to the laundromat this week. 👚

I was looking around the bathroom this morning 🛁 and noticed that it really needs a good clean. It’s just gotten kind of dirty in recent weeks. Nothing though a little scrubbing and some ammonium can’t fix. I’ve focused too much on the kitchen lately and I’ve been busy. What can I say, I’m just such a dirty hick. I wish I just had less to clean and maybe a gutter track too to sweep all the dirt and debris into.
