Danger alone!

Danger alone! ⚠

One of the concerns my therapist brought up with my love of travel and exploring the wilderness is that the risk of me having some kind of accident like falling into a gorge with nobody has else around to call for help and I essentially disappear off the map to not be found potentially for days or decades.

Exploring has its risks, especially when you are alone and doing your own thing. But as they say, freedom is not free. You take calculated risks and you live with the consequences. I don’t rush to edge of something that could be slippery and I try to be mindful of everything I do in the woods as I know there is no help but my own.

GINI Index By County

Relatively poor, rural counties upstate have the greatest equity in wealth. There isn't a lot of very wealthy people -- most people just make enough to get by in these counties. Steuben County, home of Watkins Glen and the southern Finger LakesΒ  has the lowest GINI index of any county in New York.

Dairy farmers devastated after cows ingested wire leftover from telecom project – VTDigger

TUNBRIDGE — On the first Friday of July, Amber Hoyt stood in the dairy barn she owns with her husband, Scott. She held a plastic ziplock bag with small, mangled pieces of stainless steel wire in her hand.?

Since December, the Hoyts have pulled the wire from the bodies of three cows that recently died after showing symptoms the farmers hadn’t seen before: sudden bloody noses, a high number of aborted calves, obvious signs of discomfort, a decline in milk production.?

Last fall, the Hoyts found the wire scattered throughout the cows’ feed, which they grew on their land and other fields they rent in the rolling hills of Tunbridge. As the weather cooled and the Hoyts transitioned the cows out of pasture, they began feeding the animals silage, which they make by layering chopped hay from several different fields in a bunker.

Weather Update – July 13, 2021

There will be showers and a lot of clouds today and tomorrow with a warming trend for the weekend, which looks unstable. β›ˆ

Today I am working from home 🏑, or actually probably down at the library because I’ve dropped the hot spot plan and unlimited data πŸ–₯because I’m trying to cut down my internet use and I’m in the office 🏒 more lately . This evening I have that public hearing about more development in the Pine Bush. πŸ—£οΈ

I am thinking about heading out to Schoharie this weekend but nothing yet is set in stone. β›Ί I might take off Friday although that’s coming quickly so I will need to decide shortly on that and request that day off. I haven’t taken much time off this year so I can do it that but I don’t want to use up too much time as I want to take off a week in the autumn for West Virginia.

Two weeks from now will be summer vacation πŸŠπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ so that’s something to look forward to in the coming weeks. Just the Finger Lakes, nothing too fancy this year I don’t think.
