USPS Awards Contract for New, Very Weird-Looking Delivery Truck

Unfortunately, the USPS has decided not to lead the way on the electric vehicle future as so many hoped just a few weeks ago. As I tried to warn you, it was always exceedingly unlikely the USPS would buy an electric-only fleet, and indeed that has come to pass.?

The new vehicle will have both an internal combustion engine and electric version, according to the press release, but did not say how many of each would be made. The electric versions "can be retrofitted to keep pace with advances in electric vehicle technologies," the press release added, although it's not clear what exactly this means. I initially read this as leaving open the possibility that gas versions could later be converted to electric, although that is a time-consuming, expensive, and laborious undertaking for one car, much less tens of thousands of them. It could also mean the EV versions can have batteries and drivetrains easily swapped, but as anyone who has, say, had an engine or transmission replaced in their gas car knows, that's not particularly novel. The USPS did not respond to a request for more information on these questions before publication.

FDA says J&J 1-dose shot prevents COVID; final decision soon

FDA says J&J 1-dose shot prevents COVID; final decision soon

WASHINGTON (AP) — Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine protects against COVID-19, according to an analysis by U.S. regulators Wednesday that sets the stage for a final decision on a new and easier-to-use shot to help tame the pandemic.

The Food and Drug Administration’s scientists confirmed that overall the vaccine is about 66% effective at preventing moderate to severe COVID-19. The agency also said J&J’s shot — one that could help speed vaccinations by requiring just one dose instead of two — is safe to use.

That’s just one step in the FDA’s evaluation of a third vaccine option for the U.S. On Friday, the agency’s independent advisers will debate if the evidence is strong enough to recommend the long-anticipated shot. Armed with that advice, FDA is expected to make a final decision within days.

February 24, 2021 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. πŸͺ A day with a fast letdown just like the teats of a camel. Three weeks to St. Patrick’s Day πŸ€ . Partly cloudy and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›…There is a west breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. There are 6 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 6 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Nice mild weather this morning with some blue skies. ☺ Really digging the fact I can do my morning walk with just a vest. Almost spring like, relatively speaking. No ice to deal with this morning which is good for a change. Not supposed to last today, but tomorrow and Friday should be fairly nice but cold.

Yesterday was a pretty ordinary winter gray day. ☁️ I did my morning and evening walks 🚢🏻 and the usual work from home 🏑. I do miss seeing my colleagues and even that time on the bus 🚍. As much as I hated rush hour traffic delays it was time to think and blog or do other activities on the phone, πŸ“± not allocated to anything else.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. Light and variable wind becoming south 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 62 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 2017. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1962.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 38.1Β° from the due south horizon (-32.8Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:01 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (252Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (258Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:39 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 6:07 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full 🌝 Moon in the east (91Β°) at an altitude of 36Β° from the horizon, 239,711 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 48 degrees. Breezy, 18 mph breeze β›… from the south with gusts up to 31mph. Today will have 11 hours of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.

I think I will put off going to the car wash 🚘 in favor of tomorrow. I like doing the car wash and shop πŸͺ during my lunch break. Three of a ton of salt on the roads and I don’t expect the nice weather to last into the afternoon. Plus I just like shopping on Thursday as the stores are less crowded and my work schedule less busy.

I do want to take a shower 🚿 this morning, as it’s been a half a week since Sunday and I’m feeling a bit gross. 🐽 I don’t shower as much when I’m working from home, especially in the winter but after a while the sweat 😰 starts to feel gross.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly clo iudy 🌧, with a low of 32 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 1st. South wind 13 to 18 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1914.

Rain β˜” for Saturday. But warm and sunny 🌞 I’m Sunday. Saturday, a chance of snow before 10am, then rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 46. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

Well Sunday sounds pretty nice but really muddy. πŸ‘’ If I want to go out anywhere, better plan on the muck boots. Spring is coming, although I fully expect one or two more snowstorms 🌨 before old man winter calls it quit and I’m wearing my rubbers all the time out in the woods.

🌹🌻🌼Only 24 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼 As much as I hate the black flies 🐜 I am looking forward to the snow being gone. We might have snow well into April but every day gets close to spring.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until St. Patrick’s Day πŸ€ when the sun will be setting at 7:04 pm with dusk at 7:32 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 51 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

Focus on waste reduction, not recycling – Resource Recycling

In My Opinion: Focus on waste reduction, not recycling – Resource Recycling

The survey found that three out of four respondents think the United States is doing too little to protect natural resources like water, air, wildlife and land. Seventy-four percent of respondents think the average American consumes too many natural resources, and three out of four say they are willing to reduce their personal consumption by buying only what they need.

While the vast majority believe society has a moral responsibility to prevent wildlife extinctions and they acknowledge a connection between consumption patterns and environmental impact, nearly half of all respondents said they think they consume fewer resources than the average American.
