Wildlife Management Units (WMUs)

Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are the geographical units DEC uses to set hunting and trapping seasons in New York State. This map is similar to the online one on the DEC website, however I added random colors to make the different WMUs stand out better. Updated 9/19/17 with the Northern Southern Zone line, shown in red. You may need to zoom in to see the Northern-Southern Line clearly. Updated 1/24/21 with Town, County lines along with DEC Lands shown on a Topographic Map. You can switch to alternative layers in the right hand corner. Split Rock Wild Forest

The 3,700-acre Split Rock Wild Forest is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Located in the eastern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains along the shore of Lake Champlain, it comprises the largest tract of undeveloped Lake Champlain shoreline in New York.

The wild forest is named for Split Rock Mountain, the main feature of the area. The Lake Champlain Palisades and Webb Royce Swamp are within its boundaries. The trail system provides many scenic views of Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains of Vermont. The Westport Boat Launch Site, located in the Hammond Pond Wild Forest, is the nearest location to launch on the lake and access the shoreline campsites on Split Rock Wild Forest.

January 24, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Cold Sunday. β›ͺ The radio wants you to know it’s cold, so it must be cold. Or so I was told. πŸ“» That said the swaying tree branches under the deep blue skies and occasional gusts of wind make it seem cold. ❄ Three weeks to Valentines Day ❀️ . Sunny and 11 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Breezy, ️16 mph breeze from the west-northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The current wind chill is -5. Your car don’t care about the windchill, although I guess it does take more heat away from the engine making it less energy efficient. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️

I did not go for any walks yesterday. 🚢I guess that’s a mistake that I do not regret. It was pretty cold out or so it looked out the window, although it seemed like by evening, the wind died down. Although I don’t know sometimes the wind was pretty quite but there was some massive gusts. Fortunately though, we didn’t loose power were I live at least. It would kind of suck in my dumpy apartment that normally is cold and only would be colder without heat.♨ It does work pretty good lately but I don’t keep it cranked up real high.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 23 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal. Northwest wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1999. 7.6 inches of snow fell back in 1948.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 28.3Β° from the due south horizon (-42.6Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 4:16 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (245Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:59 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 5:29 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the east (98Β°) at an altitude of 44Β° from the horizon, 248,823 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:04 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 23 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 12. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 17 mph breeze β›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 30mph. Today will have 9 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 12 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 10 at 6pm; Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2020, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1963.

🌹🌻🌼Only 55 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Valentines Day ❀️ when the sun will be setting at 5:26 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 36 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.
