Having a little downtime this morning… I’ve been going through my dash cam video from driving back from the Finger Lakes along those rural hick towns on NY 23. Such beautiful country, some day I hope to live in one of those little towns but not in the high tax and regulation New York.
Hurricane Laura's top wind speeds nearly doubled in just 24 hours as it approached the border between Texas and Louisiana. The wall of water it pushed in front of it grew until forecasters warned that it would produce "unsurvivable" storm surge.
Laura's rapid intensification is one hallmark of climate change. As the Earth warms up, the water on the surface of the ocean gets hotter. Hot water is like a battery charger for hurricanes; it send energy and moisture into the storm as it forms and helps it grow more powerful and deadly.
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to 6:30 Sunrise π. Cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. βοΈ Coming soon is the rain according to the radar. β Calm wind. The dew point is 53 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.
It seems like I’ll stay home π‘ most of today. I have a lot of projects going on for work and no Zoom Meetings. I think it will be too wet today for the morning walk πΆπ». That’s fine. I don’t have to go anywhere and it’s going to be quite wet at times although I’m not convinced all day will be a soaker with the radar.l
Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10pm, then a slight chance of showers between 10pm and 11pm. Mostly cloudy π₯, with a low of 62 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1982.
Today in 1859, Petroleum is discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania leading to the world’s first commercially successful oil well. π’ To this day, that town still smells like petroleum, and it floats in the creeks, but they produce much less oil today then at the peak around the turn of the century. Now most of barrels you see around Titusville are used by farm folk to incinerate their trash π₯.
Saturdaylooks increasingly wet thanks to the remnants of the hurricane. π¦Saturday, showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 78. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. π Maximum dew point of 72 at 1pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. πMaximum dew point of 58 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees.
It looks like Saturday will be a good day to stay home and read π while Sunday might be a good day for hiking and fishing π£. I am not planning on heading out of town next weekend but after Labor Day Weekend I might take a trip somewhere. I was hoping that the Piseco Powley Bridge would be open by then but it doesn’t seem likely with the bridge re-opening being pushed back. So for all intents and purposes I don’t see myself camping until September although honestly that’s next Monday.
Facebook keeps showing me auto π ads as I thumbed through some of them. But I’m so tired of owning a truck and I just think I could save a lot of money not owning a car and using a bicycle π² to get around town. But I still have a little over a year to decide – I do wonder about the costs of not being able to buy in bulk at Walmart, not being able to haul my own garbage to the transfer station or even taking laundry to the laundromat. Motoring is such a big chunk of change π΅ for something you have to throw away – your car – every ten years or so.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise π when the sun will be setting at 7:13 pm with dusk at 7:42 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1931.
