Between Coronavirus and the closure of the southern portion of Piseco Powley Road due to damage to the lower bridge its been the oddest of summers.
My default place of refuge during sweltering summer days – the Potholers got a lot farther away – and much more inconvenient to visit during the weekends while visiting state park pools and beaches became a lot less fun when one has to wear a mask.
At the same time, remote work blended vacation and work together. I could work via the library internet at small Adirondack towns and mobile broadband.
Some how when your camping and working it’s a very difficult experience than the normal 9-5 downtown, and with so much in the air I’ve been delaying my vacation for now. That said, I’ve forgotten how nice it is to have a day off in the woods and not have to do anything in particular.
According to a sophisticated new model, the Moon is far younger than scientists previously thought — to the tune of some 85 million years.
It’s not such a drastic shift when you consider how long the Moon’s been around. The research, published Friday in the journal Science Advances, adjusts the age of the Moon from 4.51 billion years old to 4.425 billion, with 25-million-year-long error bars on either side. But it does clarify some of the mysteries surrounding how it formed in the first place.
This morning I had a project come in around 11 and I worked from the Spectulator Town Park. At my lunch break I took a brief swim at the Speculator Town Beach and now am down at the library. Internet is kind of slow with a lot of people here, and my solar power is somewhat limited by the clouds, but I should be fine for the rest of work day.
I took down camp today, but I might go back if the rain holds off until late. I have food for tonight, so I could make it work if it’s not a downpour tonight into tomorrow. If I can make it through Thursday then Friday looks nice, and I might go back to Piseco-Powley Road for the weekend, maybe camping closer to the Powley Place. But I’m still going to see what happens this afternoon before deciding if I should drive home tonight.
Well-planned landfills have only recently come into widespread use. Recently, waste managers have found that they work a little too well and now the landfill is being reinvented.
Maybe this episode glosses over some things and makes other things sound less problematic than they are in reality but it’s a good overview on how landfills work.
But as they say in the rural living handbook, The Code of the West, you can’t burn everything, and folks live in town need a place to dump their garbage as little of it is actually recycled, to say nothing of all the business and other facilities that create tons and tons of trash and always have full dumpsters.
Good morning! What day is it? A Speculator Hump Day, of course. Cloudy and 72 degrees this morning. β That said, expected though this afternoon. β There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. π. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm.
Looking at the radar and not wanting to deal with wet camping gear π¦I took down camp this morning. Right now I’m still at camp watching for emails π§ and text from work but I can be in Speculator in ten π minutes should I need full internet access πΆ for work.
Today in 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer is arrested in Milwaukee after police discover human remains in his apartment.π Remember if you eat other humans, to take our the garbage regularly. π― Most ag schools have things posted on their websites about composting animal carcasses in manure, hay and wood chips. Gotta tie down the nitrogen with carbon to reduce the smell. π Good to return organic matter to the soil. Two years later, Great Flood of 1993: Levees near Kaskaskia, Illinois rupture, forcing the entire town to evacuate by barges operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.π€ I bet some rednecks in hick towns had some wild bonfires after that, getting rid of all their moldy, flooded junk. π₯ Small town life is fun.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. π Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 83. Maximum dew point of 64 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.
Itkind of would be fun to stay through the weekend β and maybe do round two at Piseco Powley but tonight into tomorrow looks rather wet and I don’t have much extra for food π² and clothes. π I guess it depends on the weather later this afternoon. I got to have enough power to work and I don’t want to spent two days cooped π up in my truck with the windows up working there. If I do go home, I could do something fun around home like fishing at Patridge Run. π£ Or even tent or hammock camping at a local state forest.
Of the what the hell things this morning π΅ I got a odd text from my broker about them doing the regular deposit into my IRA. Not sure why they started sending me text alerts β today, but I signed up for them a while back for security purposes. I’ve been maximizing my IRA for a while now, because I want to avoid paying state taxes and make sure when I have land and off grid property I’ll have the money I need for implements and other consumables. Plus it’s nice knowing that money will be locked π away until I’m 60, growing quietly and off my books. I don’t have to pay taxes on interest or dividends like I do other regular investments.
