‘Poisoner In Chief’ Details The CIA’s Secret Quest For Mind Control : NPR

uring the early period of the Cold War, the CIA became convinced that communists had discovered a drug or technique that would allow them to control human minds. In response, the CIA began its own secret program, called MK-ULTRA, to search for a mind control drug that could be weaponized against enemies.

MK-ULTRA, which operated from the 1950s until the early '60s, was created and run by a chemist named Sidney Gottlieb. Journalist Stephen Kinzer, who spent several years investigating the program, calls the operation the "most sustained search in history for techniques of mind control."

September 10, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. A fairly nice morning or maybe I’m just jacked up on coffee β˜• because I’m taking the early express downtown. 🚍 At least the bus at this hour goes right past my house 🏑 so no walk. Next Tuesday is Constitution Day πŸ“œ. I heard reading the constitution πŸ“– is hard in the mines or so Phil Ochs sung. Mostly sunny and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees.

Today will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 77 degrees at 5pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 4th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 5pm. Light and variable wind becoming south 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. The high last year was 60 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1931.

Today it’s off to New York City for work. πŸ—½ Should be a nice sunny day for the trip down there. Traffic at Delaware and Cherry πŸ’ was pretty slow at this hour but the express bus 🚍 downtown is keeping time ⌚. It should be scenic drive and the first time I’ve been over the new Tappan Zee which I thought would never be built. πŸ’ In 50 years it should be an interesting history to read up about πŸ“–, much like books about Nelson Rockefeller’s governorship are today.

It’s notable that the sun is rising much later these days πŸŒ…, a fact noticeable when you get up early. My alarm clock ⏰ on my phone didn’t work this morning, fortunately I set up an forty year old alarm clock on my desk across the room which didn’t fail. I made pumpkin waffles up again πŸŽƒ, which was sweet as hell again. Well it was worth a try.

The sun will set at 7:14 pm with dusk around 7:43 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 11pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 1am. Southeast wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1917.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, showers likely, mainly between 8am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. Going to be pretty warm on Saturday for mid September. I was thinking of going hiking on Sunday but maybe I should take out my kayak one more time this year and do a little fishing 🎣. The average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

I was thinking last night that I should be starting to plan out my West Virginia trip some more. 🌲🌳 I really want to spend some time hiking in Dolly Sods and one day checking out the New Gorge Bridge πŸŒ‰ and parts of Southern West Virginia. Plus spend some time at the Blackwater Falls and Cannan Heights.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is Constitution Day πŸ“œ when the sun will be setting at 7:02 pm with dusk at 7:30 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, mostly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 82 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 72 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1942.
