New York to Approve One of the World’s Most Ambitious Climate Plans – The New York Times

New York lawmakers have agreed to pass a sweeping climate plan that calls for the state to all but eliminate its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, envisioning an era when gas-guzzling cars, oil-burning heaters and furnaces would be phased out, and all of the state’s electricity would come from carbon-free sources.

It certainly sounds like an ambitious plan, and setting goals are important. Goals are great, but will there be a sustained commitment towards the goal? Or will the economic pain in out years lead the goal being ignored. Certainly it's a good statement of principles, and long overdue, and it will be interesting how it plays out.

Rainbow Falls at Mine Kill Falls

The sometimes quiet spring along the edge of Mine Kill Falls looked a lot like Rainbow Falls at Watkins Glen. Nice pretty little falls.

June 19, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Last Day of Session πŸ›! Or so the sign in my bedroom says which is only as intelligent as my programming makes it. I wonder what happens when the session countdown rolls over tomorrow, ⏳I doubt it will cause a buffer overflow and crash but it might roll over and display a random value for days remaining.

Cloudy, muggy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 63 degrees. Hello muggy weather, welcome back to Albany. Please don’t delay on your departure. That’s a reference to the humidity to be clear. πŸ˜‚ The skies will clear Friday around 3 pm. Less humid for the weekend or so I’m told.

Yesterday was a long day at work. 🏒 Got in at nine, left at eleven pm. In the evening I did run home and get Big Red and I was able to drive home right at eleven and be in bed by 11:30 after finishing off the bottle of Finger Lakes wine 🍷 that I got from Finger Lakes wino day at the well of the LOB. I’m not much of wine drinking redneck but it was free alcohol. I just hate how much room those bottles take up in the recycling bin as that means eventually another trip to the transfer station. β™» Discovered that I had spilled stuff on my jacket this morning after I got on the bus 🚍 but I have another jacket in the office to wear over at session. πŸ‘”Nine am session so I took the early bus into the city.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 81 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 26th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1995.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 16 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 74 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1918.

A picture perfect weekend to kick off our summer. 😎 What a refreshing change? Saturday, sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 58 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees. Might even be a bit cold for swimming 🏊?

I would like to get up to the Adirondacks β›Ί but at this point I don’t think it’s a realistic option. I’m just not going to get packed and ready for the weekend. But an overnight trip to Schoharie and the Mine Kill pool with some fishing 🎣 and day hiking is a good alternative.

Looking ahead, there are 8 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 7:58 pm with dusk at 8:28 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 71 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1988.

Wally’s Vision, from Clay to Concrete – 98 Acres in Albany

Wally’s Vision, from Clay to Concrete – 98 Acres in Albany

It is difficult to determine which elements of the design originate with Rockefeller or with Harrison. Each spoke of the other as the visionary. In his unpublished memoir entitled, “Builder: A Personal Memoir of Nelson K. Rockefeller,” Wally tells us that he could not remember when Nelson first discussed the Mall with him, but he recalls that the Governor sketched his concept on the back of an envelope while they flew together from Washington to New York. That sketch has not been found. While the Mall’s signature elements were indeed conceptualized by Rockefeller, they were realized in concrete, marble, steel and glass by Harrison and his firm, Harrison and Abramovitz.
